After all, DeLoach hasn’t won “Winery of the Year” 11 times for nothing. A pioneer since its start in 1975, this producer earned its reputation as the “Russian River original” with not Pinot Noir but the Zinfandel grape. Once the most widely planted varietal in the nation, Zin now comprises only about 10% of domestic production. This is DeLoach’s tribute to those forgotton vines. Four reasons we love it: • History. Testament that the Burgundian-inspired Pinot masters are also diehard Zin fanatics, the “Forgotton Vines” Zinfandel comes from a grower-winery relationship 40 years in the making. • The Finest. This wine recently stunned our Panel in a daunting Zin tasting, outscoring its peers, which included ancient vine offerings and high-altitude Rockpile wines, in depth, smoothness, and purity of terroir expression. • Critical Acclaim. Wine Enthusiast asserted this wine is “delicious for drinking now.” It follows in the footsteps of the 2008 vintage, which the magazine dubbed “easy to like” and our Panel called “impossible not to adore.” • In the Glass. With fruit sourced from mature vineyards in the warmer parts of Sonoma County, this small-production wine shows notes of exotic spice, dark cherry, and romantic, lingering tannins. Tasting Notes VARIETAL Winemaker’s notes: In honor of many old Zinfandel vines that were Zinfandel overlooked for decades in Sonoma County, our Forgotten Vines blend is APPELLATION comprised of several exemplary mature vineyards located in the warmer Sonoma County reaches of the region. The warmer climate helps ensure even ripening for ALCOHOL the Zinfandel grapes. Following careful cluster sorting, the must is fermented 14.30 in a combination of small French oak vats and stainless steel tanks. The SIZE wine is gently pressed off and aged in barrel, and the components are hand 750ml selected by the winemakers for exceptional richness, complexity, and BLEND old-vine character. Dark purple in color, this delicious Zinfandel features Zinfandel aromas and flavors of dark cherry and blackberry intermingled with exotic fruits such as guava and a touch of black pepper on the nose. The firm structure accompanied with the sweet oak influence leads to elegant tannins, a velvety mouthfeel, and a long, lingering finish. The Story to Know DeLoach Vineyards pioneered Pinot Noir wine growing in the Russian River Valley when Cecil DeLoach, a firefighter from San Francisco with a passion for winemaking, first planted the grape in 1973. In 2003, DeLoach Vineyards was purchased by the Boisset Family from Burgundy, France, when Jean-Charles Boisset fell in love with the Russian River Valley on his first visit to the area, immediately recognizing the similarities between Sonoma County and Burgundy: each boast a confluence of river, mountains, and soil that is perfect for growing world-class Pinot Noir. A recognized authority on biodynamic, organic, and sustainable winemaking, the Boisset Family had been using these eco-friendly practices in their estate vineyards in Burgundy and understood the positive effects they had on the health of the land and the quality of the wine. In 2004 the family brought that vision here to DeLoach Vineyards. Showing our dedication to the environment, we tore up award-winning, highly-lauded vineyards after the 2004 vintage and replanted with cover crops designed to revitalize the soil. New vines were planted in 2006, and the first vintage grown with biodynamic farming techniques will be the eagerly-awaited 2010 vintage. In the meantime, we continue to produce world-class wine by partnering with winegrowers who are equally dedicated to and passionate about eco-friendly farming practices and the production of high-quality wines of distinction. Perfect Pairings Cannelloni, bouillabaise, sausage, and pizza of dozens of varieties. Ratings 93 Insider Points 92 Points – Wine Enthusiast Silver – American Fine Wine Competition Reviews The Forgotten Vines is a blend from DeLoach's vineyard sources and it is done as a tribute to these amazingly old vineyards. The quantity of fruit that comes out of these ancient vines is tiny, oftentimes only 1/2 ton per acre, but the fruit is intense and deeply concentrated, A worthy source for the true Zin-believer. The wine is classic, Sonoma County Zinfandel, all berries and spice, with hints of black pepper and a good dose of sweet oak that gives it that nice, creamy texture. Flavors of raspberries, cherries, cinnamon and cloves are beautifully woven together in a wine that's full-bodied, but remains fruity and enjoyable. It finishes with a bit of berries and cream, with some soft tannins and spices. This will make any Zin lover smile! - PM "Picture perfect Sonoma Zin, said to be made from old-vine vineyards. It’s dry, softly tannic, and sweetly ripe in black raspberry, cherry, and blackberry fruit, with a rich earthiness and even an umami touch of grilled bacon. Delicious for drinking now." – Wine Enthusiast INSIDE FACT: Zinfandel was actually the first wine that Cecil DeLoach made after he founded his winery in 1975. It was only after Côte de Nuits native Jean-Charles Boisset took over in 2004 that their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay took center stage. Though we can’t get enough of any of their selections, our Panel (and the DeLoach team) have a soft spot for their powerful, fruit-driven Zins..
