LA CREMA ESTATE AT SARALEE’S VINEYARD SATURDAY | SEPTEMBER 22 | 2018 Having a positive influence for change and helping

Sonoma County thrive is one of our core beliefs.

Your contribution is a living legacy that creates deep and meaningful connections to our community and makes a difference now and well into future.

The Sonoma County Auction supports nonprofits throughout Sonoma County focused on literacy, education, health and human services, the environment and arts and culture. This year our

Fund-A-Need paddle raise is dedicated to supporting fire relief efforts, specifically towards addressing critical housing needs within our community. WELCOME TO THE 2018 AUCTION

It is our pleasure and honor to welcome you to Sonoma County and to the 2018 Sonoma County Wine Auction. We are excited to have you here in our home—a world-renown wine region known for its abundance, diversity and that are celebrated for their outstanding quality and depth of variety. Today we have the extraordinary opportunity to make a difference. With your generous contributions we can create new possibilities, make breakthroughs, forge new paths and effect change. A transformation in just one person’s life can have a ripple effect, ultimately shifting the environment around us for the better, resulting in a healthy, robust and dynamic Sonoma County. Sonoma County Wine Auction is the largest fundraising event in Sonoma County having raised over $29 million to benefit our local nonprofit charitable organizations. With your help, we have funded over 150 organizations supporting literacy, education, health and human services, arts and culture and the environment. Last October Sonoma County was one of several counties that was impacted by the North Coast wildfires. While less than 1% of our vineyards were lost in the fires, our community lost over 5,000 homes. This year our Fund-A-Need paddle raise is dedicated to rebuilding our community with a specific focus on affordable housing. Without your support, the most vulnerable individuals and families will not be able to continue living in Sonoma County. Our thanks and appreciation goes to George Hamel for being our Honorary Chair this year. Without his vision, commitment and dedication, we would not be here today. And to each and every one of you who is here with us, thank you for your generosity.

With gratitude,

GEORGE F. HAMEL, JR.

Both military “brats”, George Hamel, Jr. first met Pamela when she transferred to his high school in Northern Virginia during their junior year. In fact, they even double-dated at their junior prom— albeit with different dates! One of George’s early wine memories with Pam, when he began courting her in his mid-20s, was taking her 15 to an Italian restaurant that was above his high-school-JV-basketball- coach-salary paygrade. An attempt at making an impression and a clueless look at the wine selection in the restaurant window ended with George ordering a white wine in a bottle shaped like a fish. Pam married him eventually anyway and the rest is Hamel Family Wines history. Opened in 2014, Hamel Family Wines, located in the heart of Sonoma Valley, is truly a family affair. George and Pam’s son, George Hamel III, oversees the sales, financial and business operations, and his brother John oversees the winegrowing and winemaking. Farming organically and following biodynamic practices, Hamel Family Wines meticulously crafts limited-production wines, grown from its Sonoma Valley and Moon Mountain District estate vineyards, producing distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Sauvignon Blanc and . We celebrate and honor winemaster Richard Arrowood and his monumental 53 years of crafting wine exclusively in Sonoma County. Richard began his career at Korbel Champagne Cellars while attending college before moving to United Vintners and then to Sonoma Vineyards where he worked for Rodney Strong and developed his appreciation for the potential of single vineyard sites. From 1974 through 1990, he created the wines for Chateau St. Jean, where he developed some of the first vineyard-designate and Cabernet Sauvignon produced in Sonoma County. He and his wife, Alis, founded Arrowood with the 1985 vintage. Each year they made extraordinary small-lot and vineyard designates. Richard was the winemaster at Arrowood Winery until June 2010, when he began to devote himself full-time to making wines for his estate winery, Amapola Creek Vineyards and Winery and to pursue his 16 quest to make his greatest wines ever—a perfect homage to the phrase “saving the best for last”.

SONOMA SONOMA COUNTY VINTNERS COUNTY FOUNDATION GRANT MAKING WINE AUCTION

The Sonoma County Vintners Foundation supports the Sonoma County community through two grant programs: Fund the Future and Community Grants.

FUND THE FUTURE Fund the Future ensures that underserved students throughout Sonoma County have the literacy skills they need to succeed in school and life. Funding supports nonprofit organizations and school districts offering programming focused on increasing third grade literacy rates, one of Sonoma County’s most pressing issues. Third grade reading proficiency is one of the first key markers in a child’s academic success. Until the end of 24 third grade, children learn to read; when they enter the fourth grade, children read to learn. TRANSCENDENCE

COMMUNITY GRANTS Our Community Grants program broadly impacts Sonoma County communities in four key program areas: health and human services, education, environment, and arts and culture.

• Health and Human Services – Programs support the 25 most fundamental needs around behavioral health, housing, homelessness and hunger. Behavioral health was added as a funding priority in 2018. • Education – Programs and projects provide opportunities for workplace, career and post-secondary learning for youth. • Environment – Programs or projects that conserve and/or restore environmentally significant land, waterways and wildlife habitats. • Arts and Culture – Programs that foster a love of learning, improve personal dignity and enhance creativity for both youth and adults. • This year our Fund-A-Need paddle raise is dedicated to fire relief and rebuilding our community.

By working together with the Sonoma County Community Foundation and utilizing their 35 years of expertise in philanthropic giving and a depth of knowledge about the nonprofit organizations in Sonoma County, we are able to address key areas of need and provide support to our diverse community. Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods (Stewards) is a non-profit organization that partners with the Russian River Sector of California State Parks. Stewards promotes, restores and protects the natural and cultural resources in this region, including Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, Austin Creek State Recreation Area, Sonoma Coast State Park and the Willow Creek watershed, with the help of 300 volunteers. State Parks depend on Stewards to provide funding for the volunteers in the Parks program, for educational activities and to assist in the development of educational facilities and displays, among other activities. THE PROCEEDS MATTER Working with recommendations from CAL FIRE and California State Parks, the Stewards have embarked on a fuel reduction program to protect the watersheds in Austin Creek. The October wildfires revealed the urgent vulnerability of the 5,700 acres of this area that are especially exposed to the possibility of wildfire. By thinning densely forested areas, State Parks can implement prescribed burning to reduce fuel loads alleviating the threat of a high intensity fire. The goal is to transform Austin Creek’s forest structure of dense forest floor fuels, ladder fuels and canopy fuels to a more open forest condition. If a wildfire occurs under reduced fuel load conditions, the land can recover quickly, and there will be less adverse soil and vegetation changes affecting watershed health. We express our sincere gratitude to Chef Dustin Valette of Valette Healdsburg for his role as Culinary Chair for the Sonoma County Wine Auction and for his tireless commitment and contributions to Sonoma County. From feeding first responders alongside numerous other chefs and business owners during the October wildfires to raising money for those in need, Dustin and his family, including his father, Robert Valette, who actively fought the fires as a pilot for CAL FIRE; his brother and business partner, Aaron Garzini; Dustin’s wife, Johanna and two daughters: Charlotte and Adeline, truly embody the wonderful philanthropic spirit of our community. A Sonoma County native, Dustin Valette began his restaurant career at 13 years as a dishwasher for Catelli’s in his hometown of Geyserville. An apprenticeship at Chateau Souverain launched him into a culinary journey ending in the lifelong dream of opening his own restaurant. Dustin honed his craft in some of the most 35 celebrated restaurants before returning to Healdsburg as executive chef at Dry Creek Kitchen. While there, he garnered acclaim for cultivating strong relationships with local farmers and purveyors in search of Sonoma’s best. The idea for the acclaimed Valette Healdsburg was born nearly two decades ago over a glass of wine shared between Dustin and Aaron. In 2015, the restaurant opened its doors to the public.

Schulz Museum graciously offered by Jean Schulz • An exquisite Peanuts-inspired evening brought to life through sound and visuals • Grammy Award-winner George Winston private solo concert featuring Linus and Lucy and other classics from the animated Peanuts specials • Five-course gourmet dinner paired with Hamel Family Wines 70 • $10,000 per couple, limited to 100 couples

Charlie Brown once said: “In the book of life, the answers aren’t in the back.” But today we’ll give you a hint: you will not want to miss this once- in-a-lifetime opportunity. On Saturday, June 15, 2019, Jean Schulz, widow of beloved Peanuts comic strip creator Charles M. Schulz, will graciously open the museum doors to a limited number of guests for a private, intimate and unforgettable evening of all-things Peanuts-related, sure to evoke fond memories of days past. (We’re sorry Peppermint Patty, no last-minute groups!) Renowned pianist and Grammy Award winner George Winston will bring the innovative music to life from the classic animated TV adaptations of the Peanuts comic strip in a private solo performance. A fan since he was 16 when A Charlie Brown Christmas premiered, Winston has released two albums of the Peanuts music created by legendary San Francisco jazz musician, Vince Guaraldi; Linus and Lucy and Love Will Come. As the life and unique worldview of Charles M. Schulz literally unfolds all around you, you’ll enjoy an unprecedented, world-class food experience in a communal and convivial setting – much like Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving dinner – only this time we promise it will be free of buttered toast, jellybeans and popcorn... or not!

Event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 15, 2019.

FUND-A-NEED PADDLE RAISE

Last October Sonoma County was one of several counties impacted by the North Coast wildfires. Our community lost more than 5,000 homes, making the need to increase the amount of affordable housing available in Sonoma County one of the highest priorities. Builders estimate that the county has the potential to rebuild as many as 3,500 homes within six years.1 Rebuilding homes requires funding, maximum effort and a long-term commitment. This year our Fund-A-Need paddle raise is dedicated to affordable housing, and your contribution will benefit some of the most vulnerable residents of our community. Partnering with the Community Foundation Sonoma County, funds raised today will positively impact and directly benefit this effort. Working together, our beloved Sonoma County community can successfully rise from the unprecedented and historic events of last October’s wildfires. We express our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for your generous support. 84

THE CHAIRMAN’S CHALLENGE: CALIFORNIA VS. WISCONSIN IN THE ULTIMATE FOOD, CHEESE, BEER & WINE TASTE-OFF

PAM AND GEORGE HAMEL, JR. OF HAMEL FAMILY WINES

LOT INCLUDES: • Culinary Competition Dinner in your home for up to 20 – pitting California against Wisconsin (includes CA chef, WI chef, food, cheese, beer and wine, full-service staff, and 20 treat bags filled with cheese, beer and wine) • Travel with Pam and George Hamel, Jr. via private plane to Madison, WI to select the food, cheese, beer and wine that will compete with California’s finest • Two nights’ hotel accommodations for two couples at the luxurious Edgewater Hotel in vibrant downtown Madison, WI on the water’s edge of Lake Mendota and walking distance to the Capitol Square 114 and the University of Wisconsin • A curated day of food, cheese, beer and wine tour/tasting for two couples in Madison, Wisconsin • Preview the competing California wines with a private vineyard, winery and cave tour at Hamel Family Wines (HFW) for two couples, followed by a reserve tasting of wines paired with small bites prepared specifically for each wine

What is it with the Hamel’s Wisconsin fixation anyway? Are the two states really twins from different parents or polar opposites? Here’s your chance to settle this existential dilemma once and for all – with a food, cheese, beer and wine “taste-off”. You’ll begin by traveling with Pam and George Hamel, Jr. by private plane to Madison, WI to check out the competition. Your trip to the Badger State will be all-play as you source and sample various culinary contenders in quintessential Wisconsin “locales”. Depending on the dates selected for the trip, this reconnaissance exercise might include football, basketball or hockey games, playing golf, ice fishing, snowmobiling, or other highly prized activity of the typical Wisconsinite. Once you return home, prepare to host the ultimate culinary and beverage challenge for up to 20 of your closest friends and family. Your home will be transformed into a battle ground with a local California chef going course-to-course against a renowned Wisconsin chef. Each will prepare multiple classic home-state specialties to pair alongside their respective state’s famed beers and wines. You’ll enjoy a full-service staff to make sure your dinner goes off without a hitch, and your guests will head home with a treat bag filled with goodies from both states.
