Cumulated Bibliography of Biographies of Ocean Scientists Deborah Day, Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archives Revised December 3, 2001. Preface This bibliography attempts to list all substantial autobiographies, biographies, festschrifts and obituaries of prominent oceanographers, marine biologists, fisheries scientists, and other scientists who worked in the marine environment published in journals and books after 1922, the publication date of Herdman’s Founders of Oceanography. The bibliography does not include newspaper obituaries, government documents, or citations to brief entries in general biographical sources. Items are listed alphabetically by author, and then chronologically by date of publication under a legend that includes the full name of the individual, his/her date of birth in European style(day, month in roman numeral, year), followed by his/her place of birth, then his date of death and place of death. Entries are in author-editor style following the Chicago Manual of Style (Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press, 14th ed., 1993). Citations are annotated to list the language if it is not obvious from the text. Annotations will also indicate if the citation includes a list of the scientist’s papers, if there is a relationship between the author of the citation and the scientist, or if the citation is written for a particular audience. This bibliography of biographies of scientists of the sea is based on Jacqueline Carpine-Lancre’s bibliography of biographies first published annually beginning with issue 4 of the History of Oceanography Newsletter (September 1992). It was supplemented by a bibliography maintained by Eric L. Mills and citations in the biographical files of the Archives of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD.

THE CHIPMAN FAMILY A GENEALOGY OF THE CHIPMANS IN AMERICA 1631-1920 BY BERT LEE CHIPMAN BERT L. CHIPMAN. PUBLISHER WINSTON-SALEM. N. C. COPYRIGHT 1920 BERT L. CHIPMAN MONOTYPED BY THE WINSTON PRINTING COMPANY WrN9TON-SALEM, N. C, Introduction Many hours have been spent in gathering and compiling the data that makes up this genealogy of the Chipman family; a correspondence has been carried on extending to every part of the United States and Canada, requiring several thousand letters; but it has been a pleasant task. What is proposed by genealogical research is not to laud individuals, nor to glorify such families as would other wise remain without glory. Heraldic arms have as little worth as military aside from the worth of those bearing them. Not the armor but the army merits and should best repay describing. It has been my earnest desire to make this work as complete and accurate as possible. In this connection I wish to acknowledge the valuable aid in research work rendered by Mr. W. A. Chipman (1788), Mr. S. L. Chip man (1959), Mrs. B. W. Gillespie (see 753) and Mrs. Margaret T. Reger (see 920). C Orgin THE NAME CHIPMAN is of English otjgin, early existing in various forms such as,-Chipenham, Chippenham, Chiepman and Chipnam. The name is to be found quite frequently in the books prepared by the Record Commis sion appointed by the British Parliament, and from i085 to 1350 it usually appears with the prefix de, as,~e Chippenham. Several towns in England bear the name in one of its f onns, for instance: Chippenham, Buckingham Co., twenty-two miles from London, is "a Liberty in the Parish and Hundred of Burnham, forming a part of the ancient demesnes of the crown and said to be the site of a palace of the Mercian kings." Chippenham, Cambridge Co., sixty-one miles from London, is '' a Parish in the Hundred of Staplehou, a dis charged Vicarage in the Archdeaconry of Suffolk and Diocese of Norwich." Chippenham, Wilts Co., ninety-three miles from London, is "a Borough, Market-town and Parish in the Hundred of Chippenham and a place of great antiquity.

Introduction to the New Edition of Niels Ege’s 1993 Translation of Rasmus Rask’s Prize Essay of 1818* 1. Introduction This edition constitutes a photographic reprint of the English edition of Rasmus Rask‘s prize essay of 1818 which appeared as volume XXVI in the Travaux du Cercle Linguistique de Copenhague in 1993. The only difference, besides the new front matter, is the present introduction, which serves to introduce the author Rasmus Rask, the man and his career, and to contextualize his famous work. It also serves to introduce the translation and the translator, Niels Ege (1927–2003). The prize essay was published in Danish in 1818. In contrast to other works by Rask, notably his introduction to the study of Icelandic (on which, see further below), it was never reissued until Louis Hjelmslev (1899–1965) published a corrected version in Danish as part of his edition of Rask‘s selected works (Rask 1932).

  • Current Transformations in Norwegian Higher Education
Research & Occasional Paper Series: CSHE.2.02 UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY http://ishi.lib.berkeley.edu/cshe/ CURRENT TRANSFORMATIONS 1 IN NORWEGIAN HIGHER EDUCATION March 2002 Kim Gunnar Helsvig Research Fellow Forum for University History Dept. of History, University of Oslo Pb.1008 Blindern, N-0315 Oslo Norway tel:+47 22856873 fax: +47 22855278 [email protected] http://www.hf.uio.no/hi/prosjekter/univhist/ Copyright 2002 Kim Gunnar Helsvig, all rights reserved. This working paper is not to be quoted without the permission of the author. ABSTRACT This article revises Norwegian higher education debate from the publication of a radical reform proposal made by a government committee in May 2000 until the closure of the reform process in the parliament in May 2001. It is argued that a great rhetorical divide between neo-liberal and Humboldtian concepts of higher education characterized the debate, and that this to some extent distorted the coherence of the final solutions. Nevertheless, it is maintained that the reform is quite likely to instigate a period of profound changes in the national higher education system. Introduction In May 2000, a Norwegian government appointed committee presented a report on higher education with the selling title Freedom with responsibility.2 In this report recommendations for reform were made that – if carried out – would lead to changes in the Norwegian higher education system that in many respects would fundamentally break with national traditions. In the first section of this article I will therefore briefly outline the development and the current state of higher education in Norway, and then go on to present the reforms proposed by the committee.

At our institution, we developed and implemented a point-of-care clinical photography app that also permitted the capture of video recordings; however, the clinical findings it was used to capture and the outcomes that resulted following video recording were unclear. Objective: The study aimed to assess the use of a mobile clinical video recording app at our institution and its impact on clinical care. Methods: A single reviewer retrospectively reviewed video recordings captured between April 2016 and July 2017, associated metadata, and patient records. Results: We identified 362 video recordings that were eligible for inclusion. Most video recordings (54.1%; 190/351) were captured by attending physicians. Specialties recording a high number of video recordings included orthopedic surgery (33.7%; 122/362), neurology (21.3%; 77/362), and ophthalmology (15.2%; 55/362).

That June, the Supreme Court issued its much-anticipated decision in Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics.1 The decision culminated years of litigation over several patents held by Myriad Genetics, a Utah-based biotechnology company, covering two genes, BRCA 1 and BRCA 2. Mutations in these genes are correlated with a higher risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. Based significantly on its patents, Myriad Genetics enjoyed exclusive
