Philosophy of Science and Philosophy of Chemistry Jaap van Brakel Abstract: In this paper I assess the relation between philosophy of chemistry and (general) philosophy of science, focusing on those themes in the philoso- phy of chemistry that may bring about major revisions or extensions of cur- rent philosophy of science. Three themes can claim to make a unique contri- bution to philosophy of science: first, the variety of materials in the (natural and artificial) world; second, extending the world by making new stuff; and, third, specific features of the relations between chemistry and physics. Introduction Chemistry is unique and distinguishes itself from all other sciences, with respect to three broad issues: • A (variety of) stuff perspective, requiring conceptual analysis of the notion of stuff or material (Sections 4 and 5). • A making stuff perspective: the transformation of stuff by chemical reaction or phase transition (Section 6). • The pivotal role of the relations between chemistry and physics in connection with the question how everything fits together (Section 7). All themes in the philosophy of chemistry can be classified in one of these three clusters or make contributions to general philosophy of science that, as yet , are not particularly different from similar contributions from other sci- ences (Section 3). I do not exclude the possibility of there being more than three clusters of philosophical issues unique to philosophy of chemistry, but I am not aware of any as yet. Moreover, highlighting the issues discussed in Sections 5-7 does not mean that issues reviewed in Section 3 are less im- portant in revising the philosophy of science. -

Seeman, Department of Chemistry, University of Richmond Title: Was Plagiarism Involved in the Conceptualization of the Woodward-Hoffmann Rules? Abstract: In 1981, Roald Hoffmann and Kenichi Fukui shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry “for their theories, developed independently, concerning the course of chemical reactions.” Had Robert B. Woodward (1917 – 1979) lived two years longer, he would surely have received his second Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his contributions to the Woodward-Hoffmann rules. In the March 29, 2004 issue of Chemical & Engineering News, E. J. Corey wrote in his Priestley Medal Address, “On May 4, 1964, I suggested to my colleague R. B. Woodward a simple explanation involving the symmetry of the perturbed (HOMO) molecular orbitals for the stereoselective cyclobutene/1,3-butadiene and 1,3,5-hexatriene/cyclohexadiene conversions that provided the basis for the further development of these ideas into what became known as the Woodward-Hoffmann rules.” Letters between Corey and Hoffmann in 1981 and 1984 and other relevant information will be shown and discussed. -

BUILDING BRIDGES BETWEEN INORGANIC AND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY Nobel lecture, 8 December 1981 by ROALD HOFFMANN Department of Chemistry, Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. 14853 R. B. Woodward, a supreme patterner of chaos, was one of my teachers. I dedicate this lecture to him, for it is our collaboration on orbital symmetry conservation, the electronic factors which govern the course of chemical reac- tions, which is recognized by half of the 1981 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. From Woodward I learned much: the significance of the experimental stimulus to theory, the craft of constructing explanations, the importance of aesthetics in science. I will try to show you how these characteristics of chemical theory may be applied to the construction of conceptual bridges between inorganic and organic chemistry. FRAGMENTS Chains, rings, substituents - those are the building blocks of the marvelous edifice of modern organic chemistry. Any hydrocarbon may be constructed on paper from methyl groups, CH 3, methylenes, CH 2, methynes, CH, and carbon atoms, C. By substitution and the introduction of heteroatoms all of the skeletons and functional groupings imaginable, from ethane to tetrodotoxin, may be obtained. The last thirty years have witnessed a remarkable renaissance of inorganic chemistry, and the particular flowering of the field of transition metal organo- metallic chemistry. Scheme 1 shows a selection of some of the simpler creations of the laboratory in this rich and ever-growing field. Structures l-3 illustrate at a glance one remarkable feature of transition metal fragments. Here are three iron tricarbonyl complexes of organic moie- ties - cyclobutadiene, trimethylenemethane, an enol, hydroxybutadiene - which on their own would have little kinetic or thermodynamic stability. -

THE EPISTEMOLOGICAL AUTONOMY OF CHEMISTRY By ROBIN PFLUGHAUPT Integrated Studies Project submitted to Dr. Russell Thompson in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts – Integrated Studies Athabasca, Alberta November, 2009 THE EPISTEMOLOGICAL AUTONOMY OF CHEMISTRY 2 Abstract The “logicians’ program” or attempt to situate scientific methodology within a logical framework has come to a standstill following radical developments within the philosophy of science and science and technology studies. One of the most persistent concepts remaining from the traditional philosophy of science or logical empiricism however is the unification of science through the reducibility of chemical and biological phenomena to physical laws and explanations. Towards the end of the 19th century, chemistry underwent a physical revolution in order to describe dynamic processes and express chemical phenomena mathematically, and developments within quantum mechanics during the 1920s encouraged the assumption that chemistry is fully reducible to physics. Theoretical chemistry is briefly overviewed to reveal that quantum chemistry developed through the assistance of models developed within the “organic structuralist tradition” and empirical data to generate abstract approximations that are cumbersome to calculate. From these approximations, however chemists have produced powerful models, in particular molecular orbitals, that have become invaluable conceptual tools within chemistry since they “black box” quantum mechanical calculations and rationalize chemical processes. Despite shared ontology between physics and chemistry, since it is impossibly cumbersome to fully explain chemical phenomena at the particle level, there is the appearance of “emergentism” at the molecular level, and physics does not capture chemistry’s engineering ideology and “disciplinary matrices”, philosophical concepts including “supervenience” have been used to argue for the epistemological autonomy of chemistry. -

Introduction: the New Metaphysics of Time Over the Last Several Years
History and Theory, Virtual Issue 1 (August 2012) © Wesleyan University 2012 ISSN: 1468-2303 INTRODUCTION: THE NEW METAPHYSICS OF TIME ETHAN KLEINBERG Over the last several years, the editors of History and Theory have tracked a growing trend evident not only in the articles published in our pages but also in manuscripts submitted to the journal as well as articles published in other venues. In the broadest strokes, this trend can be described as a response to the perceived limitations of a discourse predicated on language, rhetoric, and the question of representation. Whether one subscribes to the idea that historians and theorists of history took a “linguistic turn” in the 1980s,1 an increasing number of articles and monographs have taken issue with the general influence of French “post- structuralism” or “postmodernism,” with constructivism, and specifically with the work of Hayden White. These works seek to address the perceived faults of an overemphasis on the issues of “language” and representation that has obscured or misdirected the goal of actually addressing the past by perpetually worrying over how we might go about that task. Combined with the growing interest in material culture, the ways of science, and the nature of the body, it is hard to doubt the return to the real. But what strikes us as most interesting about this trend is the way that some of these theorists have sought to move beyond the emphasis on language and representation not by returning to a crude variant of objectivism or empiricism but by re-examining our relationship to the past and the past’s very nature and by attempting to construct a new metaphysics of time. -

Kant’s Critique of Judgment and the Scientific Investigation of Matter Daniel Rothbart, Irmgard Scherer Abstract: Kant’s theory of judgment establishes the conceptual framework for understanding the subtle relationships between the experimental scientist, the modern instrument, and nature’s atomic particles. The principle of purposive- ness which governs judgment has also a role in implicitly guiding modern experimental science. In Part 1 we explore Kant’s philosophy of science as he shows how knowledge of material nature and unobservable entities is possible. In Part 2 we examine the way in which Kant’s treatment of judgment, with its operating principle of purposiveness, enters into his critical project and under- lies the possibility of rational science. In Part 3 we show that the centrality given to judgment in Kant’s conception of science provides philosophical in- sight into the investigation of atomic substances in modern chemistry. Introduction Kant’s philosophy of science centers on the problem of how it is possible to acquire genuine knowledge of unobservable entities, such as atoms and molecules. “What and how much can the understanding and reason know apart from all experience?” ( CPuR , Axvii). This raises the question of the role of experiments in the knowability ( Erkennbarkeit ) and the experientiality (Erfahrbarkeit ) of nature. Kant’s insights into the character of scientific experimentation are not given the hearing they deserve. We argue that Kant’s theory of judgment establishes the conceptual framework for understanding the subtle inter- actions between the experimental chemist, the modern chemical instrument, and molecular substance. -

Hunter (ABSTRACT) The following is a study of what may be the most puzzling and yet, at the same time, most significant aspect of Kant’s system: his theory of schemata. I will argue that Kant’s commentators have failed to make sense of this aspect of Kant’s philosophy. A host of questions have been left unanswered, and the doctrine remains a puzzle. While this study is not an attempt to construct a complete, satisfying account of the doctrine, it should be seen as a step somewhere on the road of doing so, leaving much work to be done. I will contend that one way that we may shed light on Kant’s doctrine of schemata is to reconsider the manner in which Kant employs schemata in his mathematics. His use of the schemata there may provide some inkling into the nature of transcendental schemata and, in doing so, provide some hints at how the transcendental schemata allow our representations of objects to be subsumed under the pure concepts of the understanding. In many ways, then, the aims of the study are modest: instead of a grand- scale interpretation of Kant's philosophy, a detailed textual analysis and interpretation are presented of his doctrine of schemata.
