It then focuses on a case study of a German gangsta rapper called Kollegah, who became one of Germany’s most commercially successful artists of the past few years. The case study is divided into three parts: the first involves a deconstruction of both his artistic persona and his strategies of appropriating hip-hop cultures. This is followed by a closer look at two Kollegah productions, focusing on his rhyming and signifying skills. By adding a cursory qualitative media analysis of both Internet fan forums and print and television artefacts about Kollegah, very contradictory reactions can be depicted. The article is finally able to illustrate that this artist makes great use of a (typically German?) flavour of virtuosity and that he can draw from a very unique set of capital. Kollegah is viewed as representing a successful strategy of cultural appropriation and the use of different types of capital within the network of music business in its post-digital era.

Mass media, the Web 3.0, and cor- porate governance cause an increasing level of insecurity regarding the validity of infor- mation. Furthermore, liberty is renamed into freedom to legitimize polluting and exploitive actions which appear altogether grounded on managerial interests. In Marcusian thought, this dissertation contributes to the function of the arts as means of knowledge production, while focusing on German rap as one of the most consumed forms of post-modern popular culture. The work at hand argues that to keep society under control, the metaphysical element of time has been gradually turned into a tool of surveillance. Drawing on Kutschera’s con- cept of aesthetics, a critical, textual analysis of eight contemporary German rap lyrics is conducted. The two-sided argumentation firstly focuses on a vertical time axis of post-in- dustrial society, in which time has become the object of a trade-off calculation between physical and digital control and one’s individual material wealth.

    Vom Tellerwäscher zum Gangsta-Rapper Tobias Ernsing Ich kann schlafen, wenn ich tot bin - work hard, stack checks. Neoliberalismus im populären deutschsprachigen Gangsta-Rap. Rappen Bushido, Sido und Kollegah gegen die Verhältnisse – oder haben sie das „Game“ Kapitalismus einfach nur gut gespielt? Rezensiert von Andrea Strübe HipHop war ein Kind der Rebellion. Aggressiver Ausdruck gegen Unterdrückung, Diskriminierung und Ungleichheit. Vor allem in den Schwarzen Communities New Yorks war HipHop in den 1970ern das Medium, alltägliche Kämpfe in eine Selbstermächtigung zu übersetzen. Ein Sprachrohr, um die rassistische Ungleichheit zu benennen und anzugreifen – und das zunächst völlig selbstorganisiert. Gut fünfzig Jahre später hat HipHop den Musikmarkt überschwemmt, sich bis zur Unkenntlichkeit ausdifferenziert und viele Menschen reich gemacht. Ein Paradox? Nein, nur schnöde Kulturindustrie. Dennoch variieren die Inhalte, HipHop ist für viele die Stimme der Emanzipation geblieben. Aber von einer Bewegung gegen die unsozialen Kahlschläge des neoliberalen Kapitalismus hin zu einer künstlerischen Umarmung desselben, das klingt schon nach Selbstverrat. Wie kam es dazu? Der Sozialpädagoge Tobias Ernsing hat in seinem Buch „Ich kann schlafen, wenn ich tot bin - work hard, stack checks“ den Schulterschluss aus HipHop und Neoliberalismus untersucht. Neoliberalismus in Reimform In prägnanten Abrissen der Geschichte des HipHop auf der einen und des Neoliberalismus auf der anderen Seite wird deutlich, wie sich die kapitalistische Verwertungslogik auf Spielarten des HipHop übertrugen. Die Logik des Neoliberalismus, also die Vorrangstellung von Markt, Wirtschaft und Individualisierung, hat sich zur ideologischen Hegemonie in den sogenannten westlichen Gesellschaften verstetigt. Zum neoliberalen Alltagsverständnis, das sich tief in unseren Blick auf die Welt und unsere Beziehungen eingebrannt hat, gehören individuelle Verantwortlichkeit, individuelles Erfolgsstreben und die individuelle Freiheit, sich den Marktlogiken zu unterwerfen.
