This Bud’s for you: Milwaukee will take anything including the sleeper tag in order to avoid another 90 loss campaign 6. Milwaukee Brewers: Can Carlos Lee really help the Brewers improve dramatically upon a 67-94 finish one year ago? That’s the major question right now for the baseball team in Milwaukee, which traded base stealer extraordinare Scott Podsednik to the White Sox in exchange for Lee (.305Avg. 31HR 99RBI). He gives them the right handed power bat they’ve been lacking for a while to go sandwiched in between lefty hitters Lyle Overbay (All-Star) and veteran outfielder Geoff Jenkins. Jenkins (.851 career OPS), Lee and likely Brady Clark will compose the Brewers outfield. Behind the plate is Damian Miller, who works very well with start pitchers as he did in Arizona, Oakland and Chicago, so he will have no trouble handling Ben Sheets. Chad Moeller, an ex-teammate of Miller’s with the Diamondbacks, should spell him for about 40-50 games and be a decent backup. I question how good Clark can be in the everyday lineup, markedly as the leadoff man. Clark was decent in 2004, batting .280 and stealing 15 bases. Still, don’t see him staying there long if he’s only score 40-50 runs per season. And Clark will get the chance to touch home plate with guys like Lee, Overbay and Jenkins behind him. Russell Branyan poses a threat when on the field. Despite striking out quite often, he hit 11 dingers in 51 games. Branyan, whose 81 home runs are the most of someone with less than 1500 plate appearances, would relish the opportunity to start every day or get upwards of 250 at-bats.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings November 21, 2012 CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Pitching is pricey, transactions By John Fay | 11/20/2012 12:17 PM ET Want to know why the Reds would be wise to lock up Homer Bailey and Mat Latos long-term? The Kansas City Royals agreed to a three-year deal with Jeremy Guthrie that pays him $5 million on 2013, $11 million in 2014 and $9 million in 2015. He went 8-12 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Bailey went 13-10 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Latos went 14-4 with a 2.48 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. It’s a bit apples and oranges: Guthrie is a free agent; Bailey is arbitration-eligible for the second time, Latos for the first. But the point is starting pitching — even mediocre starting pitching — is expensive. SIX ADDED: The Reds added right-handers Carlos Contreras, Daniel Corcino, Curtis Partch and Josh Ravin, left-hander Ismael Guillon and outfielder Yorman Rodriguez to the roster in order to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Report: Former Red Frank Pastore badly hurt in motorcycle wreck By dclark | 11/20/2012 7:55 PM ET The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin is reporting that former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Frank Pastore, a Christian radio personality in California, was badly injured Monday night after being thrown from his motorcycle onto the highway near Duarte, Calif. From dailybulletin.com’s Juliette Funes: A 55-year-old motorcyclist from Upland was taken to a trauma center when his motorcycle was hit by a car on the 210 Freeway Monday night.

Her scholarly interests center on colonial Latin-American literature from New Spain, specifically the 17th century. Using the case of the Spanish colonies, she explores the birth of national identities in hybrid cultures. Another scholarly interest is the genre of Latin American colonialist narratives by modern-day female authors who situate their plots in the colonial period. In 2013, she published Llámenme «el mexicano»: Los almanaques y otras obras de Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora (Peter Lang,). She also has published short stories. DEPARTMENT OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE UCLA Baseball September 23, 2010 Contact: Alex Timiraos UCLA BASEBALL WELCOMES NINE NEWCOMERS TO WESTWOOD Bruins’ recruiting class includes six position players, three right-handed pitchers LOS ANGELES – UCLA baseball head coach John Savage welcomed nine incoming freshmen to campus Thursday as fall quarter classes began in Westwood. Savage’s sixth full recruiting class at UCLA features nine freshmen, including six position players and three right-handed pitchers. “Our program is very excited about the addition of these freshmen,” Savage said. “Coach Vanderhook did a great job putting this class together, and we are very fortunate that the five players who were drafted last June chose to stick to their commitment of attending UCLA. Our coaching staff feels that these players can contribute from the start.” The Bruins’ latest recruiting class was ranked No. 4 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball on Tuesday. That marks the highest ranking of any of Savage’s six recruiting classes at UCLA by any national publication. UCLA’s 2005-06 incoming group was ranked No. 5 by Baseball America, and the Bruins’ 2007-08 recruiting class was hailed as the No. 5 group by Collegiate Baseball. UCLA’s incoming freshman class features five players selected in the 2010 MLB Draft. Each of the incoming three right-handed pitchers were drafted last June – Adam Plutko (sixth round, Houston), Zack Weiss (10th round, Pittsburgh) and Nick Vander Tuig (39th round, Toronto). Outfielder Brenton Allen (ninth round, Philadelphia) and infielder Kevin Williams (41st round, L.A. Dodgers) both hit from the left side of the plate.
