The 51-year-old Iannacone has made great strides in hi s first four years. His accompli shments at USO include an on-going internal reorga nization of the athl etic department, plus improvements in th e major areas of personnel, scholarship assistance, facilities, pro motions and marketing, fund raising, drug education, academic support, and a new university approved plan for scholarship support and sports sponsorship. In addition, he was instrumental in USO gaining membership to the new Pioneer Football League, which begins play in 1993. Iann acone came to the University of San Diego wi th an impressive li st of credentials a nd a thorough knowledge of intercollegiate athletics. Prior to USO he was Director of Athlet ics for four years at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania. Hard work, loyalty and dedication are just some of th e words th at easily describe Iannacone. His major contributions at St. Francis included the expansion of s offerings and schol arships for both men and women, improved budgets, renovati on of athletic facilities, the hiring of additional staff, and the estab lishment of a master plan for the future and continual develop ment of athletics. He served on several committees, most notably the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Infractions committee and the Northeast Conference committee on confer ence development, which developed a plan for the future and implemented the position for a full-time commissioner. Iannacone also served as a consultant to the NCAA I-AAA Football Com mittee. Prior to hi s tenure at St. Francis, Iannacone served as assis tant athletic director at Fordham University from 1977-84. Along with his administrative duties at Fordham, he was an assistant football coach for the Rams. From 1975-78, he acted as offensive coordinator and backfield coach as Fordham captured 19 victo ries in their final 24 games during this span. The 1977 squad was and remains the highest scoring team in Fordham hi story, aver aging 34 points per game. In 1983 Iannacone was presented the prestigious Jack Coffey A ward by the Alumni Association for outstanding contributions to Fordham athletics. He also served on various Metro Atlantic Conference committees. Prior to Fordham, Iannacone taught physical education and coached track and football in the Norwalk, Ridgefield and New Milford (CT) school districts from 1964-76. He made hi s colle giate football coaching debut as an offensive backfield coach at Western Connecticut State University in 1974. A 1964 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Iannacone received his master of science degree in physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1973. Tom and his wife, Cynthia, have three children: Tom Jr., Jennifer and Eric; all three are students at USD. West Coast Conference Page]

The WCC has continued to prove itself as one of the strongest collegiate baseball conferences in the country. Last ye ar saw Pepperdine win its first national base ball title. The Waves were the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Regionals in 1991 while LMU represented the WCC in 1990. Both teams appeared at the NCAA 's in 1989. Other conference members include the University of San Diego, the University of San Francisco, Santa Clara University and St. Mary's College. Pepperdine has won the WCC crown in six of the last seven years and has won or shared every conference title but one since 1974. Baseball was originally established as a conference sport in 1968. However, from 1977 through 1984, WCC teams competed with teams from the PCAA in the North ern Baseball Association (Nevada, St. Mary's, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Pacific, San Jose State, Fresno State), and the Southern California Baseball Association (Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, and San Diego from the WCC). For the second consecutive year, the WCC will play a 30-game round robin schedule with the league champion receiving the WCC's automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs.

He was th e Spanish Olympic Team Manager thi s past summer at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. A nati ve of San Diego, Jake graduated from UCLA in '7 1 with a degree in Physical Education and received his master's degree in Physical Education in 1972 from San Diego State. Jake and hi s wife Sherri have one son, Nathan, age I 9. Assistant Coach GLENN GODWIN Coach Godwin also begins his eighth year as pitching coach for the USD Toreros. A 1982 graduate of USD with a degree in Business Administration, Glenn played for Coach Cunningham's '81 and '82 teams. In 1982, Glenn had a 14-4 record in 21 appearances. Along with hi s 2.92 ERA, Glenn fanned 142 batters in 148 innings and is one of just eight Toreros to be named All American. Godwin was drafted by the Oakland A's organization in 1982 and played A ball for 2 1/2 years between '82-84. Glenn completed his MBA at USD in May of 1987. Ray and his wife Renate reside in the Clairemont area of San Diego. The Outlook Page6

TOREROS LOOK TO '93 AS A BANNER SEASON The USO baseball team is coming into the 1993 campaign off its best season in many years. Its 28-24 mark was its best since !987's 31-23-1 finish, while its second place WCC finish (14-13) was its finest showing ever. With an experienced group of everyday players returning to bolster a young but promising pitching corps and a talented list of newcomers, the USO Toreros have every reason to believe that 1993 could truly be a "Banner Season". Eight players who started for the Toreros in 1992 return for Head Coach John Cunningham in 1993. Heading the list is USD's "Mister Versatlity", senior Kevin Herde. Herde, a two-time team MVP and an All-WCC selection in 1992, will be looking to lead the Toreros in RBIs for the fourth consecutive season. During his time at USO, Herdehas played first base, third base, catcher, pitcher and has been the team's DH. He led the '92 Toreros with a .340 batting average, 13 doubles and 44 runs batted in. In 13 appearances on the mound, Herdecompiled a 2-1 record with five saves. He is expected to see much action as the Toreros' catcher in 1993, but don't be surprised to see him at IB, 3B, on the mound and in the DH role, as well. Three members of what should be a strong infield both offensively and defensively return in 1993. Senior Tony Moeder, who made a smooth transition from centerfield in '92, will anchorthe team at first base. The team's home leader in '92 with eight, Moeder began the season with a I 6-game hitting streak and ended with a .337 batting average. Second base will be shared by the duo of senior Dave Pingree and sophomore Eric Morton. Pingree, who has also played third base, shortstop and leftfield during his USO career, batted .305 as a junior while Morton, who started 14 times in '92, batted .200. Shortstop will be the domain of three year starter Chad Boyd. Boyd, a senior, was a second team All-WCC selection in '92 who led the Toreros in hitting in '91 and batted .249 as a junior. He is considered by Cunningham as "the finest fielding shortstop in the WCC". Third base is up for grabs and will be contested by freshmen Karl Schmidt and Jay Parks and junior Scott Thielman, a transfer from CS Los Angeles. Depth in the infield will come from sophomore Dave Romero and freshman Dave Sanchez. Two sophomores and a junior return to man the outfield spots forthe Toreros in 1993. Sophomore Brady Clark began 1992 as a third baseman but ended up in leftfield where he batted .297 with a WCC-leading seven triples and a season-ending 14-game hitting streak. Sophomore speedster Larry Williams, who batted .258 with 27 runs scored as a freshman, returns to his spot in centerfield. Junior Charlie Setzler, a .270 batter with 14 runs scored in '92, will occupy rightfield. This trio will be challenged by a group that includes junior John Fenn, a prime candidate for the DH role who .271 as a sophomore, and freshmen Chris Feeny, speedster Steve Ashton and Collin Weitzman. Handling the catcher's chores will be Herde or either sophomore Jacob Slania or freshman Ryan Burkeen. Slania saw limited action in 1992 and is considered a "fine handler of pitchers", according to Cunningham. Burkeen is a fine defensive catcher who has exhibited a strong throwing arm in early workouts and may be the prime candidate for the starting assignment. Returning to lead the young Torero pitching staff is sophomore Mike Saipc. Saipe climaxed an outstanding freshman campaign (8-3, 3.53 ERA, 8complete games, one shutout) by earning a unanimous berth on the AII-WCC team and being named the WCC "Freshman Of The Year". He will be joined in the potential starting rotation by sophomore Pat James (3-2, 5.27 ERA in '92), sophomore lefthanders Travis Burgus (1-2, 6.75) and Sean Durbin (who missed the '92 season due to injury) and sophomore righthander Matt LaBelle, a transfer from UC Irvine. Long and middle relief will be the domain of freshman lefthander David Russell and junior righthanders Pete Schoen and Josh Stepner ( a second team AII-WCC selection as an outfielder when he hit .272 in '92). who is making the transition to the mound in '93. Junior Chris Collins, the USO "Pitcher Of The Year" in 1991 who compiled two saves in '92, will be given the role of closerout of the bullpen with Herde also expected to occupy that role. The 1993 season will be a challenging one for the USO Toreros. With their fine showing in 1992, the Toreros have given every indication that they are "on the verge of something good", according to Cunningham. They will face an interesting, if not difficult schedule in 1993 that will include six games against defending national champion Pepperdine, two with 1992 runner-up Cal State Fullerton, two with perennial powers UCLA and San Diego State, three with UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge as well as a trip through Louisiana that will see them play a doubleheader with Tulane and a single contest with Southern University. The stage is set for what should be an interesting 1993 season. With an experienced everyday line-up backed by a young and talented pitching staff, the Toreros are well-placed to play exciting baseball for their avid group of supporters. The 1993 campaign should, indeed, be a "Banner Season".

~ ~ 40 40 Molina's Olympic Experience Page8

MOLINA LEADS SPANISH TEAM TO OLYMPIC GLORY The summer of 1992 will forever be special 10 USO assistant baseball co:1ch Jake Molina. Molina, who is in his eighth season as Head Coach John Cunningham's chief ass istant coach, achieved th e opportunity to·· reali ze a dream··. He spent most of the summer in Barcelona and had th e opportunity 10 experience the 1992 Summer Olympic Games "close up and personal". Jake Molina was head coach of the Spanish Olympic baseball team. Jake's journey 10 Barcelona '92 began back in 1988 when he was in vited 10 Spain to work wilh the youth program in Barcelona. He was ta sked w ith conducting clinics in which both players and prospective coaches were in structed in the fundarnemal techniques of baseball. After instructing the eager Spaniards on the "ins and outs" of baseball and "pulling the teaching principles of the sport together", Molina was invited to work out for two weeks wilh the tledgling Spanish National Team. "I figured this would end my association," Molina recalls, "but I was wrong. I was invited to accompany the team to the World Championships in Italy as their pitching coach. Additionally, I was asked 10 help with the initial stages of planning for the '92 Olympic Games." Being fluent in Spanish also proved to be an asset and Molina developed a rapport with a Spanish ti:arn th at was eager to grasp his teaching techniques. The head coach of the team resigned afler the I 988 World Championships. Jake Molina was asked to take his place. Molina accepted the position in June of 1989, jusl in time to take the learn 10 the Friendship Cup in Wichita, Kansas. This was the first taste of Americana and American baseball for the majority of his players. It was a taste they learned to enjoy, a taste they would experience in the years to come. He followed this up by entering his team in the 1989 European Championships in Paris where "Europe and the world began to sit up and take notice" of the young Spaniards. He guided the Spanish team to a third place finish (beating the Swedish learn for third) in the tournament with three of his players balling over .300 and lhe le arn selling a IOurnamenl record. Spanish baseball was improving under his tutelage . Preparations for lhe Barcelona Games continued and Molina was again asked for his inpul. He brought his team to San Diego for another "taste of American baseball" and traveled to such places as Cuba, Nicaragua, Chinese Taipei and throughout Europe to give his players" a taste of different styles of baseball throughout the world". Through it all, the master plan continued to evolve. Through ii all, Spanish baseball continued to improve. That plan reached fruition in early 1992. A new format was established 10 select the team that would represent the host country in baseball in Barcelona, a fonnat Molina says "1he players and coaches took to immediately". The lop 80 players in Spain were divided into four teams and a selection tournament was played. With Molina leading the selection commillee, the 25 players who would carry the Spanish colors and a nation's pride into the 1992 Summer Olympic Games was chosen. The team made two pre-Olympic trips to Italy, first for the European Championships and then for the Columbus Games. It was at the Columbus Games in Milan that Spain defeated Italy for the first time in 35 years, a feat of such magnitude in Spain that, Molina says, "you would have thought we captured the world title". "There was so much pride in being the host team for the Olympic Games," Molina says of the competition in Barcelona. "Everywhere we went and everywhere we played was the same. We were besieged by a Spanish people proud ID have us representing them. It was a special time and a special experience!" Of the Olympic games themselves, Molina says, "It was a great feeling to be around peoples of so many different countries, so many great athletes, each with a common purpose and kinship, a common bond. There was so much mutual respect among each of the athletes." "Everything had to be perfect and it was," Molina says of his fondest memory, the Opening Ceremony. "To see every athlete allired in the costume of his country was so amazing. When we marched into the Olympic Stadium we got a standing ovation from the 90,000 people asembled there. l 've never been involved in anything so emotional." 'Tm very satisfied with the team's performance," he now evaluates retro spectively. "We played good, hard baseball in every game. Our upset of Puerto Rico will always be special to me." Of hi s experience with Spanish baseball, Molina says, "The Olympic Games arc a feather in every Spaniard's cap. Their preparation and effort were firs I rate. I'm really pleased with the growth of the team in both physical and menial aspects. This team has a chance to be something special if they continue their learning and work ethic." "The Olympic Games were an experience of a lifetime. It's the best thing I have ever done!" Seniors Page 9

UNIVERSITY PROFILE The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic univer sity located on a 170-acre mesa overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor, and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park after the Spanish university town where St. Didacus (i.e.,Diego) spent much of hi time. Complementing its splendid natural setting is the University's locati on just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego - conveniently close to the major business, cultural, residential, and recreational areas, as well as the rail, bus and air te1minals. Founded in 1949, USD is presently experiencing record atten dance. Undergraduate enrollment stands at 3,900, graduate students bring the overall campus enrollment to just over 6,000. The University includes a College of Arts and Sciences, and Schools of Business Administration, Education, Nursing, and Law. Each is characterized by high academic standards, small classes, and excellent student-faculty relations. Though the majority of students come from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well-represented on campus. Students also attend USD from 24 foreign countries. In January of 1987, USD opened the doors to its new University Center, a 74,500 square foot building for students, faculty and staff. The two level Center is the largest building on campus. It is the eighth major project completed al USD during the past ten years. It 's a place for people lo meet for leisure and fun , and a place for ex tracurricular activities. Recreation, intramural and athletic activities are expanding rap idly. Among the many recreation and intramural programs offered, some of the favorites include: Mission Bay Aquatic Center activities (water skiing, surfing, sailing, crew), modem dance, aerobics, bowl ing, karate, backpacking, softball, tennis, floor hockey and volleyball. USD intercollegiate sports for men include football, soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, crew, tennis and golf. In women's intercollegiate sports, USO fields programs in volleyball, cross coun try, swimming, basketball, softball, crew, tennis and soccer. N ~
