He assumed the position Sep tember I, 1988 after a nationwide search. The 54-year-old Iannacone has made great strides in his first seven years. His accomplishments at USD include an inter nal reorganization of the athletic depart ment, plus improvements in the major ar eas of personnel, scholarship assistance, facilities, promo tions and marketing, fund raising, drug education, academic support, and a new university approved plan for scholarship support and sports sponsorship. In addition, he was instru mental in USO gaining membership to the Pioneer Football League, which began play in 1993. Iannacone came to the University of San Diego with an impressive list of credentials and a thorough knowledge of intercollegiate athletics. Prior to USD he was Director of Athletics for four years at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania. Hard work, loyalty and dedication are just some of the words that easily describe Iannacone. His major contribu tions at St. Francis included the expansion of sports offer ings and scholarships for both men and women, improved budgets, renovation of athletic facilities, the hiring of addi tional staff, and the establishment of a master plan for the future and continual development of athletics. He served on several committees, most notably the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Infractions committee and the Northeast Conference committee on conference develop ment. Iannacone also served as a consultant to the NCAA I-AAA Football Committee. Now that USD football is competing at the I-AA level, he is a member of the I-AA Athletic Directors Association Executive Committee. He is also the new chairman of the West Coast Conference Athletic Directors Committee. Prior to his tenure at St. Francis, Iannacone served as assistant athletic director at Fordham University from I 977- 84. Along with his administrative duties at Fordham, he was an assistant football coach for the Rams. From 1975-78, he acted as offensive coordinator and backfield coach as Fordham captured 19 victories in their final 24 games during this span. The 1977 squad remains the highest scoring team in Fordham history, averaging 34 points per game. In 1983 Iannacone was presented the prestigious Jack Coffey Award by the Alumni Association for outstanding contributions to Fordham athletics. He served on various Metro Atlantic Conference committees. Prior to Fordham, Iannacone taught physical education and coached track and football in the Norwalk, Ridgefield and New Milford (CT) school districts from 1964-76. He made his collegiate football coaching debut as an offensive backfield coach at Western Connecticut State University in 1974. A 1964 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Iannacone received his master of science degree in physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1973. Tom and his wife, Cynthia, have three children: Tom, Jennifer and Eric. All three are recent graduates of USO. -3- CoAcH JoHN CuNNtNGHAI\I John Cunningham begins his thirty-third season at the helm of the USD baseball program. An ABCA Hall of Farner, Cunningham has led the Toreros to 16 winning seasons includ ing two World Series appearances. Cunningham also has over 700 career victories to his credit ranking him in the top forty in all-time victories by Division I coaches. A native San Diegan, Cunningham attended St. Augustine High School and the University of San Francisco. A basketball and baseball standout, Cunningham also excelled academically making the President's Honor Roll six times at USF as well as achieving membership in Alpha Sigma Nu, the Na tional Jesuit Honor Society. In basketball, he was named All-Conference and selected as Honorable Men tion on the Catholic All-American lists as well as being named USF' s Athlete Of The Year as a senior. In 1960, he took part in the U.S. Olympic Basketball Team Trials. After a tour in the

This Bud’s for you: Milwaukee will take anything including the sleeper tag in order to avoid another 90 loss campaign 6. Milwaukee Brewers: Can Carlos Lee really help the Brewers improve dramatically upon a 67-94 finish one year ago? That’s the major question right now for the baseball team in Milwaukee, which traded base stealer extraordinare Scott Podsednik to the White Sox in exchange for Lee (.305Avg. 31HR 99RBI). He gives them the right handed power bat they’ve been lacking for a while to go sandwiched in between lefty hitters Lyle Overbay (All-Star) and veteran outfielder Geoff Jenkins. Jenkins (.851 career OPS), Lee and likely Brady Clark will compose the Brewers outfield. Behind the plate is Damian Miller, who works very well with start pitchers as he did in Arizona, Oakland and Chicago, so he will have no trouble handling Ben Sheets. Chad Moeller, an ex-teammate of Miller’s with the Diamondbacks, should spell him for about 40-50 games and be a decent backup. I question how good Clark can be in the everyday lineup, markedly as the leadoff man. Clark was decent in 2004, batting .280 and stealing 15 bases. Still, don’t see him staying there long if he’s only score 40-50 runs per season. And Clark will get the chance to touch home plate with guys like Lee, Overbay and Jenkins behind him. Russell Branyan poses a threat when on the field. Despite striking out quite often, he hit 11 dingers in 51 games. Branyan, whose 81 home runs are the most of someone with less than 1500 plate appearances, would relish the opportunity to start every day or get upwards of 250 at-bats.
