Celebrating 27 Years. “1994-2021” 1 U | MESSAGE ONTARIO SPORTS HALL OF FAME | Celebrating 27 Years. “1994-2021” 1 u | MESSAGE A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT… 2020 was a year of tremendous upheaval for our province, testing the patience and endurance of our communities as we managed through the covid-19 crisis. The priority for all of us was to focus on mitigating the spread of this virus and keeping our communities safe. To that end, we elected to reschedule our annual celebration one year out at a new venue, the John Bassett Theatre in order to recognize our inductees and special award recipients. Our annual induction ceremony and awards gala is in its’ 27th year and I offer my personal and profound thanks for your past support for our annual celebration and related community activities. This year’s OSHOF Gala will present another stellar “Class of 2021” inductee lineup including an outstanding selection of special award recipients. Whether you choose to come on board as a major partner, as a corporate sponsor or with the purchase of individual tickets for you and your guests, your participation provides invaluable support enabling us to showcase and appreciate our most recognized sports athletes, community leaders and volunteer citizens. Of course, you can expect to indulge in a fabulous evening of tasty hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and unforgettable entertainment and many opportunities to bid on selected treasures in the live auction and participate in our 50-50 raffle. It’s a night of networking with your sporting heroes, business, community and philanthropic leaders, not to mention the athletes themselves. To our board of directors and volunteers who donate their time, talent and creativity, I extend my appreciation to them all! We must rely upon your generosity to sustain our celebration, education and awareness of Ontario sporting accomplishments to our citizens and communities across Ontario. Mark Gravett, President Ontario Sports Hall of Fame 2 ONTARIO SPORTS HALL OF FAME | Celebrating 27 Years. “1994-2021” u | ABOUT THE HALL ABOUT THE ONTARIO SPORTS HALL OF FAME The Ontario Sports Hall of Fame (OSHOF) is a volunteer, charity organization devoted to honouring Ontario’s greatest athletes, builders, personalities and media for their lifelong contributions to the Ontario sports scene. It is the role of the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame to ensure that these memories remain firmly ingrained in our hearts and minds and that time will not diminish the nature of our legends’ deeds for generations to come. The Hall of Fame was established in 1994 by Bruce Prentice, following a 15-year tenure as founder and president of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. Sadly Mr. Prentice passed away in December 2020. His determination, conviction and love of everything sport will be sorely missed. The inaugural class of honoured members was inducted in 1994. Each year, the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame honours recipients of the Brian Williams Media Award, the Sandy Hawley Community Service Award, the Bruce Prentice Legacy Award and the Syl Apps, Ontario Athlete of the Year Award. On Wednesday, Applebaum and LPGA Tour commissioner Mike Whan spoke with media, and the pair were full of praise for Canadian golf fans and tournament partners, so far this week. “This is a week we've been looking forward to for a long time,” said Applebaum. “Ever since Brooke (Henderson) hoisted our national championship trophy a year ago in Wascana, we knew we'd be coming to a spectacular golf club (this year), with an amazing turnout for the week ahead, and we couldn't be more excited to watch Brooke as well as all our 15 Canadians who are in the draw along with 96 out of the top 100 LPGA Tour players. “We're so thankful the LPGA Tour has made this such an important stop on their global tour.” Whan, who played in the Championship Pro-Am Wednesday alongside Applebaum in a group with Golf Canada Young Pro Squad member Maddie Szeryk and Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship winner Jennifer Kupcho, said the experience at the CP Women’s Open this week at Magna Golf Club has been nothing short of spectacular. “This is elite. Ko, who shot an 8-under-par 64 Sunday at Magna Golf Club, has now gone 106 holes without a bogey. She beat Nicole Broch Larsen, whose runner-up was her best career LPGA Tour finish, by five shots. Lizette Salas and Brooke Henderson tied for third at 19-under. Jin Young Ko’s winning score of 262 (-26) is a new CP Women’s Open tournament scoring record. She beat the prior record – held jointly by Ariya Juanugarn in 2016 and So Yeon Ryu in 2014 (265, -23) - by three shots. “It was (an) incredible crowd out here, and then lots of fans here and Koreans, too,” said Ko of the final round, where she was grouped with Broch Larsen and Henderson. Ko has won two majors already this year – the ANA Inspiration and the Evian Championship – along with the Bank of Hope Founders Cup. She leads the Rolex Rankings as the world’s No.1- ranked golfer, as well as the season-long Race to CME Globe. Ko started to pull away on the back nine, where she made six birdies. Ko also has a Canadian connection, as she uses PGA of Canada professional Gareth Raflewski has her short-game coach.
