With their large size, meaningful subject, Porcelain decorated in overglaze famille rose exceptional quality of painting and continuous enamels and gold composition, these two vases oer an outstanding example of Yongzheng porcelain and appear China — Qing dynasty, to have no comparison in recorded collections. Yongzheng period (1723-1735) Named the Vases of the ‘Hundred Treasures’ after their surface decorations of precious antiques, H. 90 Ø 37 cm potted owers and furtive animals, they represent three signicant aesthetic trends of the global PROVENANCE 18th century: illusionism, antiquarianism and J. H. Smidt van Gelder Collection auspicious symbolism.

Rocks (shi or shou ) are traditional symbols 石 壽 of longevity on account of their natural properties, and provide added wishes for achieving an advanced age. Rocks of remarkable beauty were kept by scholars in their gardens or on tables, and were admired as miniature mountains. Rocks and pebbles are also occasionally named ‘longevity stones’ due to their toughness, which is alluded to in an expression that equates longevity as being made of ‘metal and stone’ (jin shi chang shou ). 金石長壽

The combination of peonies (fuguihua ) 富貴花 and ‘scholars’ rocks’ (gongshi , or shangshi 供石 ) expresses a wish for longevity and a ‘long 赏石 and prosperous’ life (chang ming fugui ). 長命富貴
