MagnificentBy Stephen FuchsWith an incredibly probing and persistent eye, James Rudin paints a comprehensive portrait of arguably the most prominent Jew of the first half of the twentieth century. The portrait reveals Rudin's great awe of Rabbi Wise prodigious talents and accomplishment, but it takes the Rabbi Wise sharply to task for being blinded by his affection for President Roosevelt and failing to use his large platform to do more to save Europe's Jews during World War II.Rabbi Rudin's great gift is his ability to make the details of history read like an exciting novel. This is truly an outstanding book!3 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Extremely well written and fascinating biography of the best known and most active rabbi of the first half of the 20th centuryBy PhilThis is an amazing book! It is exceedingly well written and provides many fascinating stories about Rabbi Stephen Wise, who was one of the best known in America, and even worldwide, during the first half of the 20th century. Rabbi Wise participated in the founding of the ACLU and the NAACP and worked diligently for equal rights for all Americans. He never shied away from controversy and was very well known in the Jewish community and was also active in interfaith movements. The author did a huge amount of research and provides the reader with extensive notes. He presents Rabbi Wise's story with clear explanations and interesting asides. The book is easy and pleasurable reading and gives a remarkably clear picture of the tumultuous period in which Wise lived. The author presents his views fairly and does not hesitate to mingle criticism with praise for this very human, but charismatic Jewish leader.1 of 4 people found the following review helpful. ldquo;Rabbi USArdquo; explored in ambitious, penetrating biographyBy Philip JasonThrough the first half of the twentieth century, no one dominated the American Jewish cultural landscape like Rabbi Stephen S. Wise. Another rabbi with a distinguished career, A. James Rudin, has taken it upon himself to explain this phenomenon. He does so with abundant energy, exquisite detail, and a balanced view of his controversial subject. Rudin meticulously takes us through the stepping stones of Wisersquo;s ascent to power and influence over several decades. And he does much more than this. In fact, an alternative title for Rabbi Rudinrsquo;s book could be ldquo;Stephen S. Wise in His Time.rdquo; Just about every major episode in Wisersquo;s life is set into the larger context of national and international events in which he played a role or had a stake. This biography is a splendid achievement both as a work of scholarship and as a piece of story- telling. During his long career, Rabbi Stephen Samuel Wise received letters with only two words written on the envelope: ldquo;Rabbi USA.rdquo; But the United States Postal Service was never in doubt about the intended recipient: there was only one ldquo;Rabbi USA.rdquo; No other rabbi before or since Wise has dominated the American and the international scene with such passion and power. Both his admirers and opponentsmdash;there was no shortage of either groupmdash;acknowledged him as the premier leader of the American Jewish community and a major political figure. Pillar of Fire goes behind the headlines and the once-closed archives of the White House and the State Department to reveal the complex and controversial personal relationship between Wise and President Franklin D. Roosevelt when millions of lives hung in the balance during . It also explores Wisersquo;s remarkable relationships with both President and United States Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis. Finally, the book describes how Wisersquo;s extraordinary actions in the realm of social justice and human rights permanently influenced every clergyperson, seminary. and house of worship in America.

Disturbed by the many different Jewish voices that insisted on being heard, Roosevelt is rumored to once have wished that the Jews had a Pope like a normal people. Had that been possible the leader most suited for the role, both by his own choice and the vote of most , would have been Rabbi Stephen Wise. In his liberalism, his love of Roosevelt and the New Deal, Wise most closely resonated the political culture of American Jewry during the years of the Holocaust.Stephen S. Wise has been undeservedly neglected in the years since his death. Rabbi Rudinrsquo;s fair- minded biography restores this colossus to his well-deserved pedestal.nbsp; In many ways, this is a one-of-a-kind biography of a one-of-a-kind rabbi. --Jonathan D.
