Autocross: A low-speed driving event, teaching one how to maneuver one’s car around a Kurt Jensen set course of pylons on a closed circuit. Instruction is available, drivers compete against the Orono, MN clock. No modifications to one’s car are necessary. Concours: A setting where Porsches are displayed for general viewing and/or inspection competition. Experienced judges evaluate the various models based upon cleanliness, overall condition and authenticity. Note: Nord Stern conducts an ‘All Porsche Show’ at which cars are ‘shown’ but not judged. Driver Training: A driving course designed to teach and enhance high speed driving skill and technique on an actual race course. Training includes classroom sessions, on-track ‘exercises’ plus supervised lapping sessions. A Pre-Requisite for Driver Ed participation and NOT to be confused with Driver Education events. Driver Training includes both Novice and Intermediate level options. Check with DT Chair for additional options. Driver Education: High speed driving event on a closed-course racetrack (Brainerd, Blackhawk Farms, Road America, for example) where drivers are grouped according to prior lap times. Prior Driver Training participation is required. Performance enhancements are frequently made (but not required!). Parade Laps: Often held during lunch at Driver Training/Driver Ed events at closed-course racetracks, this controlled environment with a pace car provides participants an opportunity to take street cars on the track at highway speeds so that they can see what the course is like. Minors are permitted in state approved restraints and with a signed parental release. PCA Club Racing: Wheel-to-wheel competition between drivers who hold PCA club racing licenses. There is a race class for every model Porsche. Safety modifications to your vehicle required. Rally: An event wherein a driver and co-driver complete a predetermined route along open roads following a specific set of navigational instructions. Can be aTDS (time- distance-speed) or a ‘fun’ rally. Social: Organized gatherings of club members, affiliates and family member to meet, eat and drink beverages! Tech Session: Casual educational session that span a wide range of topics, from general maintenance, through Concours prep, performance enhancements and general car/mechanical knowledge! 5 NORD STERN SEPTEMBER 2016 The Prez ummer has flown past us and we are now with two days of on-track driving in our Last Fling motoring into a rich and full September schedule. Special thanks to Doug Anderson, September 7 - 11, our monthly Business Meetings the Eventmaster, and to all of the Nord Stern and resume on the 13th, Last Fling Driver’s Training and National Club Race staff volunteers who helped make Driver’s Education events are September 16 - 18 the on-track event possible.

    Once Upon A Wire Wheel by Bernie and Norm Koglin This is the first in a series of articles recalling a few highlights from the fifty year history of the Chicago Region SCCA. Most of the information in this article is found in a history of the Club’s early years written by Fred Wacker some years ago. We also wish to thank Burdie Martin for the loan of his copies of the very earliest issues of PISTON PATTER which are an invaluable source. In the Beginning…… 1948- 1954 The term “sports car” would have meant very little to a vast majority of Americans in the years right after World War II. Then, MG TC’s began arriving in the U.S. and a few people started to take notice. Among them was Fred Wacker, who purchased one of the first little British cars in early 1948. In May of that year, Fred and Bud Seaverns drove the MG to Indiana-polis for the 500. After the race they were caught in the usual traffic jam, and came across Bill Spear and Sam Bailey, a couple of New Yorkers, in a Bentley. A mutual interest in their respective cars led to introductions, and in due course Fred and Bud heard of the “Sports Car Club of America” for the first time. Ownership of a “sports car” was an SCCA membership requirement at that time. Since Fred qualified in that respect, Bill and Sam suggested he become a member of the Club. After joining, Fred discovered there was no Chicago Region.

Dear SCCA Media Partners, Welcome to what is truly a new era of the Sports Car Club of America, as the SCCA National Champi- onship Runoffs heads west for the first time in 46 years to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This event, made possible with the help of our friends and partners at Mazda and the Sports Car Rac- ing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), was met with questions at its announcement that have been answered in a big way, with more than 530 drivers on the entry list and a rejunvenaton of the west coast program all season long. While we haven’t been west of the Rockies since River- side International Raceway in 1968, it’s hard to believe it will be that long before we return again. The question on everyone’s mind, even more than usual, is who is going to win? Are there hidden gems on the west coast who may be making their first Runoffs appearance that will make a name for themselves on the national stage, or will the traditional contenders learn a new track quickly enough to hold their titles? My guess is that we’ll see some of each.

    NEWS RELEASE Lola T400 and Surtees TS5 Win Second Round of 2008 th USA Formula 5000 40 Anniversary Championship Officers & Directors Rochester Hills, MI – ( July 23, 2008) – The Formula 5000 Drivers Association is pleased to announce the results of Round Two of its 40 th Anniversary Historic Seb Coppola Races held during the weekend of July 18 - 20, 2008 at Road America as part of President the Kohler International Challenge with Brian Redman. Bruce Leeson Overall winner of the Sunday Race and placing in first place in Class B (post 1971 Treasurer cars) was Hamish Somerville in a 1974 Lola T400. This is Hamish’s second consecutive win. Winner of Class A (pre 1972 cars) and finishing 5th overall was Mark Harmer Mark Harmer driving a 1969 Surtees TS5. Director Second place in Class A went to Paul Dudiak driving a 1969 McKee MK12C. Third place went to Mike Knittel driving a 1970 Chinook F5000 car. Honorary Members In Class B, Second place went to Roger Williams driving a 1974 Lola T332. Roger is visiting the US with his car from Auckland, New Zealand. Third place in Class B Tony Adamowicz went to Chris Pedersen driving a 1972 Lola T300.
