Most of the information in this article is found in a history of the Club’s early years written by Fred Wacker some years ago. In the Beginning…… 1948- 1954 The term “sports car” would have meant very little to a vast majority of Americans in the years right after World War II. Then, MG TC’s began arriving in the U.S. and a few people started to take notice. Among them was Fred Wacker, who purchased one of the first little British cars in early 1948. In May of that year, Fred and Bud Seaverns drove the MG to Indiana-polis for the 500. After the race they were caught in the usual traffic jam, and came across Bill Spear and Sam Bailey, a couple of New Yorkers, in a Bentley. A mutual interest in their respective cars led to introductions, and in due course Fred and Bud heard of the “Sports Car Club of America” for the first time. Ownership of a “sports car” was an SCCA membership requirement at that time. Since Fred qualified in that respect, Bill and Sam suggested he become a member of the Club. After joining, Fred discovered there was no Chicago Region.

    NEWS RELEASE Lola T400 and Surtees TS5 Win Second Round of 2008 th USA Formula 5000 40 Anniversary Championship Officers & Directors Rochester Hills, MI – ( July 23, 2008) – The Formula 5000 Drivers Association is pleased to announce the results of Round Two of its 40 th Anniversary Historic Seb Coppola Races held during the weekend of July 18 - 20, 2008 at Road America as part of President the Kohler International Challenge with Brian Redman. Bruce Leeson Overall winner of the Sunday Race and placing in first place in Class B (post 1971 Treasurer cars) was Hamish Somerville in a 1974 Lola T400. This is Hamish’s second consecutive win. Winner of Class A (pre 1972 cars) and finishing 5th overall was Mark Harmer Mark Harmer driving a 1969 Surtees TS5. Director Second place in Class A went to Paul Dudiak driving a 1969 McKee MK12C. Third place went to Mike Knittel driving a 1970 Chinook F5000 car. Honorary Members In Class B, Second place went to Roger Williams driving a 1974 Lola T332. Roger is visiting the US with his car from Auckland, New Zealand. Third place in Class B Tony Adamowicz went to Chris Pedersen driving a 1972 Lola T300. It was wonderful to see and hear a full field of Ron Dykes Formula 5000 race cars racing again at a major race circuit like Road America after more than three decades from the last professional race in 1976.
