E-mail: thoro- [email protected] ABSTRACT: Among frogs, vocalizations play important roles in their social interactions. Herein we de- scribe fi ve new types of vocalizations for two foam-nesting species of the Leptodactylus pentadacty- lus group, L. syphax and L. labyrinthicus. Behavioral observations and recordings were done in four localities within the Cerrado biome, at southeast and central Brazil. Before emitting advertisement calls, males of L. syphax often started producing a sequence of notes, which gradually turned into the advertisement call. These different notes may be an introductory call, which would serve to prepare the vocal structures for the emission of the high-frequency/amplitude advertisement calls. A male of L. syphax was emitting advertisement calls when a female approached and started to emit brief and low-amplitude calls; these vocalizations probably are reciprocation calls. Males of L. labyrinthicus involved in agonistic interactions can emit vocal cracks (encounter call) and deep rough sounds (ter- ritorial calls). Five courting males of L. labyrinthicus released screams with their mouth slightly opened in response to the approach of human observers. We conclude that these screams do not represent distress or territorial calls. Key Words: Leptodactylus labyrinthicus, L. syphax, male vocalizations, female vocalization.

Here, we establish a comprehensive amphibian barcode reference database in a central area of South America, in particular for specimens collected in Mato Grosso do Sul state (Brazil), and to evaluate the applicability of the COI gene for species-level identification. Both distance- and tree- based methods were applied for assessing species boundaries and the accuracy of specimen identification was evaluated. A total of 204 mitochondrial COI barcode sequences were evaluated from 22 genera and 59 species (19 newly barcoded species). Our results indicate that morphological and molecular identifications converge for most species, however, some species may present cryptic species due to high intraspecific variation, and there is a high efficiency of specimen identification. Thus, we show that COI sequencing can be used to identify anuran species present in this region. We previously suggested that the trophic eggs are laid just after amplexus has finished, but our new data do not support this hypoth- esis. We also present further details on the natural history of the species with regard to breeding activity, spawning site, retreats and the ability of tadpoles in preying upon fully-growth heterospecific tadpoles. We also show that the tadpoles are mainly nocturnal and take diurnal refuges. We collected the data in Brazil in three localities within the Cerrado Biome. We examined burrows used by L. labyrinthicus males, verified if females still contained mature eggs just after released from amplexus, and tested the ability of tadpoles in preying fully-growth heterospecific tadpoles. Field observations and experiments were conducted on tadpole activity time, hiding behaviour and level of susceptibil- ity to predation by the bird leaf-scrapers in four sheltering situations. Reproduction could start before the first rains; this may be advantageous by allowing the tadpoles to exploit eggs of other frogs. We found one floating nest built in a temporary pool.

Despite its great distribution, the biological diversity of the biome still much unknown. Herein, we present a revision about the herpetofauna of this threatened biome. It is possible that the majority of the living families of amphibians and reptiles UNESCOof the savanna ecoregion originated – inEOLSS Gondwana, and had already diverged at the end of Mesozoic Era, with the Tertiary Period being responsible for the great diversification. Nowadays, the Cerrado harbors 152 amphibian species (44 endemic) and is only behind Atlantic Forest, which has 335 species and Amazon, with 232 species. Other SouthSAMPLE American open biomes , CHAPTERSlike Pantanal and Caatinga, have around 49 and 51 species, respectively. Among the 36 species distributed among eight families in Brazil, 10 species (4 families) are found in the Cerrado. Regarding the crocodilians, the six species found in Brazil belongs to Alligatoridae family, and also can be found in the Cerrado.
