Recordings of Mahler Symphony No. 4
Recordings of Mahler Symphony No. 4 by Stan Ruttenberg, President, Colorado MahlerFest SUMMARY After listening to each recording once or twice to get the general feel, on bike rides, car trips, while on the Internet etc, I then listened more carefully, with good headphones, following the score. They are listed in the survey in about the order in which I listened, and found to my delight, and disgust, that as I went on I noticed more and more details to which attention should be paid. Lack of time and adequate gray matter prevented me from going back and re-listening all over again, except for the Mengelberg and Horenstein recordings, and I did find a few points to change or add. I found that JH is the ONLY conductor to have the piccolos play out adequately in the second movement, and Claudio Abbado with the Vienna PO is the only conductor who insisted on the two horn portamenti in the third movement.. Stan's prime picks: Horenstein, Levine, Reiner, Szell, Skrowaczewski, von Karajan, Abravanel, in that order, but the rankings are very close. Also very good are Welser- Most, and Klemperer with Radio Orchestra Berlin, and Berttini at Cologne. Not one conductor met all my tests of faithfulness to the score in all the too many felicities therein, but these did the best and at the same time produced a fine overall performance. Mengelberg, in a class by himself, should be heard for reference. Stan's soloist picks: Max Cencic (boy soprano with Nanut), in a class by himself. Then come, not in order, Davrath (Abravanel), Mathes (von Karajan), Trötschel (Klemperer BRSO), Raskin (Szell), Blegen (Levine), Della Casa (Reiner), Irmgard Seefried (Walter), Jo Vincent (Mengelberg), Ameling (Haitink RCOA), Ruth Zeisek (Gatti), Margaret Price with Horenstein, and Kiri Te Kanawa (Solti), Szell (Rattle broadcast), and Battle (Maazel). -

A Collection of Stan Ruttenberg's Reviews of Mahler Recordings From
A collection of Stan Ruttenberg’s Reviews of Mahler Recordings from the Archives Of the Colorado MahlerFest (Symphonies 3 through 7 and Kindertotenlieder) Colorado MahlerFest XIII Recordings of the Mahler Third Symphony Of the fifty recordings listed in Peter Fülöp’s monumental discography (up to 1955, and many more have been added since then), I review here fifteen at my disposal, leaving out two by Boulez and one by Scherchen as not as worthy as the others. All of these fifteen are recommendable, all with fine points, all with some or more weaknesses. I cannot rank them in any numerical order, but I can say that there are four which I would rather hear more than the others — my desert island choices. I am glad to have the others for their own particular merits. Getting ready for MFest XIII we discovered that the matter of score versions and parts is complex. I use the Dover score, no date but attributed to Universal Edition; my guess this is an early version. The Kalmus edition is copied from who knows which published version. Then there is the “Critical Edition,” prepared by the Mahler Gesellschaft, Vienna. I can find two major discrepancies between the Dover/Universal and the Critical (I) the lack of horns at RN25-5, doubling the string riff and (ii) only two harp glissandi at the middle of RN28, whereas the Critical has three. Our first horn found another. Both the Dover and Critical have the horn doublings, written ff at RN 67, but only a few conductors observe them. -

Decca Discography
DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>H HOLLAND Decca first recorded the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra during a visit to London in March 1946 (AR10127-33) and the same matrix series was used for the first recordings made in the orchestra’s own hall. From 1947 a distinctive matrix series was used and Decca allotted many of its most important symphonic sessions to the orchestra, either under van Beinum or distinguished guests, until 1953 when it switched to the Philips label. It stayed there under Haitink until 1980, reappearing on Decca with Ashkenazy and recovering its former importance to the label whilst Chailly was in charge (1988-2004). Since then under Jansons the Concertgebouw has followed the LSO in creating its own record label. There were also a few sessions with the radio orchestra in Hilversum in 1970-74. >RVH VENUES Twelve different venues were used, but only one reached double figures, whilst five were only visited once. BEURS VAN BERLAGE, AMSTERDAM (1988) was originally a stock exchange (1903). The 600 seat concert hall, initially known as the WANG ZAAL and chosen for a piano recording in 1991, had been re-named the YAKULT ZAAL by the time of its next chamber ensemble recording in 2004. CONCERTGEBOUW, AMSTERDAM (1888) contains both the 2000 seat GROTEZAAL, where the resident orchestra was recorded from 1946-2004, and the 400 seat KLEINEZAAL, used occasionally from 1983-98. [107+6 entries] HET MUZIEKTHEATER, AMSTERDAM (1986), a 1600 seat house, staged a production by the resident Netherlands Opera that was televised in 1998. WAALSEKERK, AMSTERDAM (1409) is noted for its acoustics and was favoured from 1988-93 for three Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra recordings. -

The Recorded Heritage of Willem Mengelberg and Its Aesthetic Relevance
Copyright 2014 Samir Ghiocel Golescu THE RECORDED HERITAGE OF WILLEM MENGELBERG AND ITS AESTHETIC RELEVANCE BY SAMIR GHIOCEL GOLESCU DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Music with a concentration in Performance and Literature in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2014 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor William Kinderman, Chair Professor Ian Hobson Associate Professor Sherban Lupu Assistant Professor Katherine Syer ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the art and interpretative aesthetics of the Dutch conductor Willem Mengelberg (1871-1951), as preserved in his sound recordings and, subsidiarily, in his writings. Emphasis is given to issues pertaining to 19th century performance practice, as well as to historical connections between Mengelberg and compositional/interpretative trends in Europe at the time. Mengelberg’s impact on musical life in Amsterdam, New York, and beyond will be considered. The relevance of Mengelberg’s recordings is assessed from both a documentary and aesthetic point of view. The quasi-entirety of Mengelberg’s rich body of recordings has been consulted, yet a few dozens of them have been chosen for an in-depth study meant to illuminate both their historical context and their contemporary relevance. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS It is with gratitude that I acknowledge the help and support of the committee members, particularly long-time University of Illinois mentors Ian Hobson and William Kinderman, as well as previous mentors and close musical friends such as Florica Nitzulescu, Ioan Welt, Elena Andriescu, Isabelle Belance-Zank, Hubert Wendel, and Sergei Pavlov. I am indebted to Ingrid Ilinca for her help and support. -
