I. Introduction Legal pragmatism is a visible movement in law academia today. The group advocating this stance is composed of a wide-ranging and diverse set of individuals. The list includes Daniel Farber,1 Thomas Grey,2 Margaret Radin3 and Judge Richard Posner4 among many others. Advocates of this stance insist that adoption a pragmatic conception of law practice can help law as a social tool function more effectively. More specifically legal pragmatism is advocated as a judicial stance. A glance at the group listed as legal pragmatists raises the question of whether there is a cohesive center to such a stance. If right-wing judges and leftist-feminists can advocate the same stance something is definitely suspicious. One suspects that there might not be any guts to a stance that can claim adherents from such otherwise radically opposed camps. -
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) The Code offers a set of values, principles, and standards to guide decision making and conduct when ethical issues arise. It does not provide a set of rules Code of Ethics that prescribe how social workers should act in all situations. Specific applications of the Code must take into account the context in which it is being considered and the possibility of conflicts among the Code’s values, principles, Preamble and standards. Ethical responsibilities flow from all human relationships, from the personal and familial to the social and professional. The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well- being and help meet basic human needs of all people, with particular attention Further, the NASW Code of Ethics does not specify which values, principles, and to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and standards are most important and ought to outweigh others in instances when living in poverty. In the study, which is a qualitative research method patterned on phenomenology, data was collected using a semi-structured interview form. Structured interviews were conducted with seven research assistants selected from a faculty of education at a state university in Ankara using the criterion sampling method. According to the research results, research assistants were determined to prefer taking faculty members as their role models in building their professional identity. They see this process as an opportunity to specialize in their field and improve themselves, feel that working at a pioneering university with prestige in its field increases their responsibilities, and are more enthusiastic about improving themselves in that direction. In relation to deficiencies in the process of building their professional identity, the participants stated that they have limited opportunities regarding practice and feel uncomfortable conducting research unrelated to their practice. The research results were discussed in the context of related literature, as well as the administrative and functional structure of the higher education system. Introduction: Social Work and Philosophy ROBERTA WELLS IMRE, COORDINATOR Study Group for Philosophical Issues in Social Work A journal issue unequivocally about philosophical concerns in social work is evidence of the recent progress we have made in the profession in recognizing the importance of philosoph- ical commitments in social work activities. Awareness of the presence of these commitments and dissatisfaction with conven- tional social work resources for addressing them led to the or- ganization of the Study Group for Philosophical Issues in 1985. The papers presented here have been contributed by members of this group, which is open to anyone interested in joining the conversation. Social work has always been a complex profession. Through- out its history awareness of human need has consistently exceeded available resources for providing help. Modern man- ifestations of this dilemma can be seen in the suffering of the homeless and the mentally ill on our streets and in other public places, in the pain of neglected and abused children, and in the distress of so many other people in trouble of one kind or an- other. -

International Journal of Innovation, Creativity and Change. www.ijicc.net Volume 3, Issue 2, November, 2017 Strengths-Based Approach in Social Work: A distinct ethical advantage Venkat Pulla , Australian Catholic University [email protected] The author believes that social work and human services professionals can see great outcomes when they work with the inherent strengths of individuals, family groups and organisations. Whenever we assist people in their recovery and their empowerment, our commitment to build on these inherent strengths goes a long way. In all humility this is about a way of asking the client three simple but pertinent questions: ‘What has worked for you before? What does not work for you? And what might work in the present situation for you?’ These three questions will allow facilitators and clients to make important changes in the processes and goals of engagement that will see through a variety of changes; as workers we are often wonderstruck as, with every change, clients seem to blossom. People pick up their bits and pieces and reconstruct hope for the future. In this paper the author will describe this approach in social work and expand on its assumptions and its core elements. HEELAN Georgetown University Washington, DC 20057 Abstract: Hermeneutics or interpretation is concerned with the generation, transmission, and acceptance of meaning within the lifeworld and was the original method of the human sciences stemming from F. Schleiermacher and W. Dilthey. Hermeneutic philosophy refers mostly to M. Heidegger’s. This paper addresses natural science from the perspective of Heidegger’s analysis of meaning and interpretation. Its purpose is to incorporate into the philosophy of science those aspects of historicality, culture, and tradition that are absent from the traditional analysis of theory and explanation, to re-orient the current discussion about scientific realism around the hermeneutics of meaning and truth in science, and to establish some relationship between the current philosophy of natural science and hermeneutical philosophy. -
The Social Status of the Teaching Profession: a Phenomenological Study
Journal of Teacher Education and Educators 183 Volume 8, Number 2, 2019, 2019, 183-203 The Social Status of the Teaching Profession: A Phenomenological Study ( Received March 21, 2019- Approved August 8, 2019 ) Özgül Mutluer1 and Sedat Yüksel2 Abstract This qualitative, phenomenological study aims to determine teachers’ perceptions of the so- cial status of the teaching profession in Turkey, and the factors have shaped this perception over time. The data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with 26 teachers, 16 of whom were retired. The findings of the study reveal that teachers have negative opinions about the social status of the teaching profession. Teachers base their views on a variety of professional and non-professional factors. The most effective factors are financial gain, rela- tions between the Ministry of National Education and teachers, the teacher education system, and teacher employment. Key Words: Social status, teacher, teaching profession Introduction The term status comes from the concept of ‘standing’ in Latin and refers to the position of people in society (Turner, 2001). Parsons (1967) defines status as a posi- tion within the social structure, which is shaped according to various criteria, based on evaluations of the dignity and reputation of the individual. In the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, the concept of status is expressed both according to the importance of teachers’ duties and the degree of value given to their abilities, as well as their recognition in the community in terms of working condi- tions, wages and the financial benefits from which they benefit. This report emphasises providing the teacher with an important role in the development of humanity and the progress of education because the teacher’s status is also an indication of how robust the education system is (Cameron, 2003). -

Abou El Fadl, Chair In his Munqidh, al-Ghazālī states that there were four classes of seekers of truth at his time: the theologians, the followers of the doctrine of Ta‘līm, the philosophers, and the Sufis. He depicts himself here as a Sufi who denounces the others, especially philosophy. This image of al-Ghazālī became the major perception of him from the beginning. But this perception changed completely in the twentieth century. The most recent scholarship challenges this image and views him as a kind of scholar who was heavily influenced by philosophy and disseminated its teachings in disguise. However, the concentration is given mostly to the philosophy of Ibn Sīnāwhile searching the source of this influence. While not denying the influence of Ibn Sīnā, this study argues that Rasā’il Ikhwān Ṣafā’ must be taken ii seriously as a major source of philosophical influence on al-Ghazālī’s thought despite the negative remarks he makes about them. It tries to prove its argument first by situating al- Ghazālī’s negative remarks in the political and social conditions of his time and second by comparing his works, especially his Mishkāt al-Anwār, with Rasā’il. -
