E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This paper presents several new additions and changes to the subfamily Amblyseiinae of New Zealand. Amblyseius lentiginosus Denmark & Schicha, 1974 is newly recorded in New Zealand and its males and females are redescribed in detail. Amblyseius obtusus was recollected and a revised key to New Zealand species of Amblyseius is provided. Proprioseiopsis lenis (Corpuz & Rimando, 1966) is reported from New Zealand for the first time and its females are described in detail. A key to New Zealand species of Proprioseiopsis is also included. A rare species, Phytoscutus acaridophagus (Collyer, 1964), was rediscovered and its males and females are redescribed in detail. Three species, two in Amblyseius and one in Proprioseiopsis, are transferred to the genus Graminaseius: G. bidibidi (Collyer, 1964) comb. nov., G. martini (Collyer, 1982) comb. nov. and G. exopodalis (Kennett, 1958) comb.

    www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Semi‑automated identifcation of biological control agent using artifcial intelligence Jhih‑Rong Liao1, Hsiao‑Chin Lee1, Ming‑Chih Chiu2,3* & Chiun‑Cheng Ko1,3* The accurate identifcation of biological control agents is necessary for monitoring and preventing contamination in integrated pest management (IPM); however, this is difcult for non‑taxonomists to achieve in the feld. Many machine learning techniques have been developed for multiple applications (e.g., identifcation of biological organisms). Some phytoseiids are biological control agents for small pests, such as Neoseiulus barkeri Hughes. To identify a precise biological control agent, a boosting machine learning classifcation, namely eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), was introduced in this study for the semi‑automated identifcation of phytoseiid mites. XGBoost analyses were based on 22 quantitative morphological features among 512 specimens of N. barkeri and related phytoseiid species. These features were extracted manually from photomicrograph of mites and included dorsal and ventrianal shield lengths, setal lengths, and length and width of spermatheca. The results revealed 100% accuracy rating, and seta j4 achieved signifcant discrimination among specimens. The present study provides a path through which skills and experiences can be transferred between experts and non‑experts. This can serve as a foundation for future studies on the automated identifcation of biological control agents for IPM. Integrated pest management (IPM) is applied in agricultural practices to concurrently minimise crop damage, environmental contamination, and economic loss 1,2. Biological control agents are crucial for IPM and agro- ecosystems. Regularly monitoring pests and biological control agents is necessary for IPM. Without accurate identifcation, the efciency of biological control cannot be monitored 2,3.

Four subfamilies are recognized, two of them new. Of the 43 genera diagnosed, 10 were Dreviously recognized, 8 previously synonymized, 1 i5 elevated from a subgenus, and 29 are new. Nine new species are described and figured. Alto- gether 187 speciesare cited. Many systematic studies have been conducted on this important family of predatory mites during the past 10 years. More than 180 species are now known, and the present high rate of species discovery indicates that this number may be doubled during the next decade.

ISSN 1676-0611 Two of the most economically important superfamilies of phytophagous mites are Tetranychoidea and Eriophyoidea, which have species represented in rubber trees in Brazil. In this paper we review the literature concerning the mite fauna registered on rubber trees in that country. The source was the information available on literature, but also data from exploratory samplings in Goianésia, State of Goiás, and from a triennial survey with monthly samplings in Cedral, State of São Paulo. Among the phytophagous mites the most important and abundant species were Calacarus heveae and Tenuipalpus heveae. Seven of the nominal species reported belong to the family Tetranychidae. Eutetranychus banksi and Oligonychus gossypii were very numerous in several crops studied, although with no evident damage to the leaves caused by the former.

They are found in many dicotyledons including certain members of the Rubiaceae. As part of an ongoing study of selected southern African members of the tribe Vanguerieae of this family, their structure in transverse section was investigated. In some taxa, such as Plectroniella armata, light microscopic (LM) observations revealed large numbers of stomata in the domatia as well as a number of channel-like structures extending across the cuticle toward the cavity of the domatia. The cuticle of the epidermis lining the domatia also appeared thicker than in other parts of the leaves. The epidermis in P. armata was also examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Domatia have been shown to house mainly mites, many of which are predatory or fungivorous, in a symbiotic (mutualistic) relationship with the plant. To date, much research has focussed on the role of domatia in providing shelter for various organisms, their eggs and their young. However, the TEM study revealed the apparent ‘‘channels’’ and thick cuticle seen under LM to be electron dense non-cellulosic branching fibrils within pronounced, often closely spaced cuticular folds.

This paper presents information about the morphology and distribution of phytoseiid mites collected in yerba mate in the Ilópolis and Putinga counties of Brazil between 2002 and 2004. Four areas with of different forms of cultivation in every county were sampled. A list of the species recorded from that state, and a key for their identification are provided. Sixteen phytoseiid mites species were identified, belonging to 11 genera in the subfam- ilies Amblyseiinae (13 species) and Typhlodrominae (three species). The most abundant genus was Amblyseius with three species. Phytoscutus sexpilis Muma, 1961 and Typhloseiopsis dorsoreticulatus Lofego, Demite & Feres, 2011 are reported for the first time from Rio Grande do Sul state. This study also includes the description of a new species, Typhlodromips pallinii n.
