It includes taxa described or recorded from the beginning of January 2021 up to the end of May 2021, plus 3 species that were named in 2020 which were missed. Please note that only higher taxa that include new taxa or changed/corrected records are listed below. The list is until the end of May, however some papers published in June are listed in the ‘in press’ section at the end, but taxa from these are not yet included in the checklist. As per the previous on-line checklists, in the bibliography page numbers have been added (in blue) to those papers that were published on-line previously without page numbers. New additions or changes to the previously published list and supplements are marked in blue, corrections are marked in red. In Ross (2021) new species of spider from Wunderlich & Müller (2020) were listed as being authored by both authors because there was no indication next to the new name to indicate otherwise, however in the introduction it was indicated that the author of the new taxa was Wunderlich only. Where there have been subsequent taxonomic changes to any of these species the authorship has been corrected below. -

Pouring Plates from Prepared Bottled Media Primary Hazard Warning Never purchase living specimens without having a disposition strategy in place. When pouring bottles, agar is HOT! Burning can occur. Always handle hot agar bottles with heat-protective gloves. For added protection wear latex or nitrile gloves when working with bacteria, and always wash hands before and after with hot water and soap. Availability Agar is available for purchase year round. Information • Storage: Bottled agar can be stored at room temperature for about six months unless otherwise specified. Never put agar in the freezer. It will cause the agar to breakdown and become unusable. To prevent contamination keep all bottles and Petri dishes sealed until ready to use. • Pouring Plates • Materials Needed: • Draft-free enclosure or Laminar flow hood • 70% isopropyl alcohol • Petri dishes • Microwave or hot water bath or autoclave 1. Melt the agar using one of the following methods: a) Autoclave: Loosen the cap on the agar bottle and autoclave the bottle at 15 psi for five minutes. While wearing heat-protective gloves, carefully remove the hot bottle and let it cool to between 75–55°C before pouring. This takes approximately 15 minutes. b)Water Bath: Loosen the cap on the agar bottle and place it into a water bath. Water temperature should remain at around 100°C. Leave it in the water bath until the agar is completely melted. While wearing heat- protective gloves, carefully remove the hot bottle and let it cool to between 75–55°C before pouring. c) Microwave: Loosen the cap on the agar bottle before microwaving. -

The Intestinal Protozoa A. Introduction 1. The Phylum Protozoa is classified into four major subdivisions according to the methods of locomotion and reproduction. a. The amoebae (Superclass Sarcodina, Class Rhizopodea move by means of pseudopodia and reproduce exclusively by asexual binary division. b. The flagellates (Superclass Mastigophora, Class Zoomasitgophorea) typically move by long, whiplike flagella and reproduce by binary fission. c. The ciliates (Subphylum Ciliophora, Class Ciliata) are propelled by rows of cilia that beat with a synchronized wavelike motion. d. The sporozoans (Subphylum Sporozoa) lack specialized organelles of motility but have a unique type of life cycle, alternating between sexual and asexual reproductive cycles (alternation of generations). e. Number of species - there are about 45,000 protozoan species; around 8000 are parasitic, and around 25 species are important to humans. 2. Diagnosis - must learn to differentiate between the harmless and the medically important. This is most often based upon the morphology of respective organisms. 3. Transmission - mostly person-to-person, via fecal-oral route; fecally contaminated food or water important (organisms remain viable for around 30 days in cool moist environment with few bacteria; other means of transmission include sexual, insects, animals (zoonoses). B. Structures 1. trophozoite - the motile vegetative stage; multiplies via binary fission; colonizes host. 2. cyst - the inactive, non-motile, infective stage; survives the environment due to the presence of a cyst wall. 3. nuclear structure - important in the identification of organisms and species differentiation. 4. diagnostic features a. size - helpful in identifying organisms; must have calibrated objectives on the microscope in order to measure accurately. -

Ermolaeva1,3* Abstract Background: Some pathogenic bacteria have been developing as a part of terrestrial and aquatic microbial eco- systems. Bacteria are consumed by bacteriovorous protists which are readily consumed by larger organisms. Being natural predators, protozoa are also an instrument for selection of virulence traits in bacteria. Moreover, protozoa serve as a “Trojan horse” that deliver pathogens to the human body. Here, we suggested that carnivorous amoebas feeding on smaller bacteriovorous protists might serve as “Troy” themselves when pathogens are delivered to them with their preys. A dual role might be suggested for protozoa in the development of traits required for bacterial passage along the food chain. Results: A model food chain was developed. Pathogenic bacteria L. monocytogenes or related saprophytic bacteria L. innocua constituted the base of the food chain, bacteriovorous ciliate Tetrahymena pyriformis was an intermedi- ate consumer, and carnivorous amoeba Amoeba proteus was a consumer of the highest order. The population of A. proteus demonstrated variations in behaviour depending on whether saprophytic or virulent Listeria was used to feed the intermediate consumer, T. pyriformis. Feeding of A. proteus with T. pyriformis that grazed on saprophytic bacteria caused prevalence of pseudopodia-possessing hungry amoebas. Statistically signifcant prevalence of amoebas with spherical morphology typical for fed amoebas was observed when pathogenic L. -

Burton Classical Conversations: Challenge 4; Southeastern University ENGL 1233: English Composition II Grace Veach April 16, 2020 2 Abstract Protozoa are magnificent creatures. They exhibit all of the functions intrinsic to living organisms: irritability, metabolism, growth and reproduction. Within these functions, there are numerous examples of mutations that occur in order for organisms to adapt to their given environments. Irritability is demonstrated in protozoa by their use of pseudopodia, flagella, or cilia for motility; it has been shown that such locomotors exhibit diversity while maintaining similar protein and chemical structures that appear to be a result of evolutionary processes. Metabolism in protozoa is similar to that of larger animals, but their diet is unique. They primarily feast upon bacteria, which have begun mutating to evade easy ingestion and digestion by protozoa, therefore increasing their survival rate and making it necessary for protozoa to adapt. -
