Description: ​ At Fred's Appliance Academy, students will receive hands­on classroom instruction from an instructor with over 30 years experience in the appliance repair industry. The class will start with basic electrical circuitry and schematic training, followed by , kitchen, and . A variety of makes and models will be introduced to the students allowing for a complete education on appliance repair. The course wraps up with the ioAST certification exam and the NASTeC certification exam. Course Points: ​

Requirements: ​ To successfully complete this course, it is advised that you not only pay attention in class, but take notes, and participate in the hands­on training sessions. While this course is designed to give you a foundation for a successful career in appliance repair, it is up to you to take the technical information learned and apply it. In order to participate in class you must have an email address that you can remotely access. Registration is open to any adult over the age of 18; students are ​ required to be able to lift fifty (50) pounds. Students must have Type 1 608 EPA license. Students must have a with a Windows operating system and Internet Explorer. Students must have the textbook Troubleshooting and Repairing Major Appliance by Eric Kleinert. ​ ​

Readings: ​ In addition to various PDF files, and electronic exams, that are used throughout the course, Fred's Appliance Academy utilizes the textbook Troubleshooting and Repairing Major Appliances – Third Ed., ​ ​ by Eric Kleinert.

Grading:

Students are graded on a variety of subjects, including but not limited to: Schematics, Skills – Outlet , Part Function, and Part Recognition, Mid­term Exam, Appliance Diagnostics, Brazing, Meter Care, Overall Class Participation, Sealed Systems, and the State of Refrigerant Drawing. Instructor reserves the right to add or take away from grading material. Grading Scale (your average must equal 75% or better to pass the course): 100 – 94 A 93 – 88 B 87 – 82 C 81 – 75 D 74 – 0 F

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES General Rules: ● All students are required to wear clean, protective (i.e. long sleeves) clothing and safety glasses (when appropriate). ● All students are to report to class on time. Class begins at 8:00 AM. Class will not be held up for students that are tardy. ● Any missed course work, or notes, are the responsibility of the student ● All students are required to follow basic personal hygiene. ● No student shall have an odor generally offensive to others. An offensive body odor may result from a lack of good hygiene, from an excessive application of a fragrant aftershave or cologne or from other cause.

COURSE OUTLINE Below is a brief overview of what will be covered in this course. A review will be conducted each day, on the previous day's topics.

Week 1

● Introduction/Orientation/Release Forms ● Electrical Theory: Reading and Discussion ● Discuss types of circuits ● Building Low Voltage circuits ● Using test equipment, i.e. VOM – Digital & Analog ● Discuss basic circuits & how to draw them ● Discuss Ohms Law & how it effects circuits ● Build circuit using 120 VAC: Adding different loads ● Series & Parallel circuits ● Wiring diagrams ● ● Electric & gas dryers ● Motors – different types: Split phase PSC and 3 – Phase

Week 2

● Discussion on previous weeks ● Identify parts used on Microwaves, Dryers (gas & electric) ● Discuss how parts work & how to identify when they need replaced ● Electric ranges & gas ranges: basic – covering general controls & how they work ● Water heaters – how they work ● Top load washer: Theory of operation and Tear down ● Finish up on top loads ● Front load washers ● Theory – typical problems ● Boot install/removal ● Door lock assembly ● Drive system ● Complete tear down ● Dishwashers – theory ● Typical problems – detergent & chemicals ● Tear down
