Pacific Porsche Generation II 997 PDK Introduction Story by Jimmie Mitchell Photos by Jimmie Mitchell & Skip Carter

As I think about my Pacific Porsche Open House experi- ence, I realize that it did not start that afternoon at Pacific Porsche. It started a little earlier than I thought it would. After arriving at the GPX Breakfast Club Meeting and exited my car with camera in hand, my one thought was to capture the events of the morning Breakfast Club Meet- ing. I needed pictures of GPX members and their cars, to GPX members Arturo Chaparro, Suesan Way, Rico be used in the November issue of the Circuit. Lopez, De Jur and Roger Lubeck

I was also eager to attend the Pacific Porsche Open House with the introduction of the 2009 and the new PDK . I had heard a lot about the new transmission from other GPX members. I also read the excellent August Panorama magazine article about the Doppelkupplung (double clutch) gearbox.

While walking from my car, I was greeted by GPX mem- bers as usual, some I hadn’t seen in a while. Out of the cor- ner of my eye I could see a group crowded around a new VP Rick Mills, Frank Medrano, Tech Inspection blue Cabriolet. After my conversations ended, I walked Chair Richard Clewett and his son, Paul over see the new car and to my surprise I discovered that it was the 2009 Carrera. At first glance I could not see any distinguishing differences in this 2009 model. Looking into the engine compartment I could see one difference, it was a lot more open than previous models. I could look across the top of the engine and see the fire wall. Sitting inside the car, I notice the paddles shifters on either side of the Steering wheel. Looking down at the gear selector I could see that it indeed had the new PDK transmission. PDK was embossed on the front of the gear selector in large letters. There was no guessing that this car has the The Generation II 997 Engine Compartment — roomy new transmission.

After arriving at Pacific, I could hear the band as it played, Ump-Pa-Pa. It was Octoberfest at Pacific Porsche. There were people in line to test drive the new Porsche, while others were sitting at umbrella covered tables with black linen table cloths.

I decided that I would eat first and take a test drive later. Approaching the buffet lunch table, I could see a large variety of foods to select from. There was Roast Beef, Bar- becue Chicken, Bratwurst, Red Cabbage, German Potato Salad, and Green Salad. To quench your thirst you could select from beer, soda, and water. For those with a sweet tooth you could there was Apple Strudel and German chocolate cake. Pacific Porsche's Carlye Mooney The new PDK shifter

 November 2008

Serving the food was a group of very nice young ladies dressed in Octoberfest attire. The ladies, Nathalie, Lu- ciane, Monika, Mariana, and Allie added greatly to the Octoberfest theme.

While eating I was told that the wait time to test drive the new Porsche was 45 minutes and getting longer, so I quickly covered my food and got in the test drive line. There I was greeted by a very nice young lady with clipboard in hand by the name of Carlye Mooney. After verifying my California drivers license, she added my name to her list. There was nothing to complain about with the quality and selection of food, drink and desert Finally my turn arrived. The brief downpour of rain had forced the top to be raised on both of the blue Cabriolets. Salesman Kam Noghreh brought the Cabriolet up and I climbed behind the wheel. Kam got in the passenger seat. As I buckled up and adjusted the seat, Kam explained some of the new features of the 2009 Carrera. He ex- plained that this engine had more horsepower and is more fuel efficient than previous models. He went on to give details of the PDK transmission, and how to select the automatic and modes.

The Generaltion II 997 Cabriolet With the vehicle in the automatic mode, I exited the park- ing lot, making a right turn on to Pacific Coast Highway. Accelerating, I noticed how smoothly the transmission shifted from gear to gear. As I braked for the light, the transmission was just as smooth going down the gears. The ride and experience was excellent to this point.

At the next light I moved the gear selector to the manual mode. Because of the traffic and our route, I was not able to really give it the test I wanted in the manual mode. There was a brief time where I was able to accelerate mov- ing the gears quickly from first to second and briefly to third, but soon I was braking for the next light. All too soon we were back on Pacific Coast Highway and Pacific.

Nathalie, Luciane, Monika, Mariana and Allie This smooth shifting transmission is great. The new design paddle shifter is easy and fun to use. My brief test drive in this car was delightful. This is the perfect car for Freeway and Weekend/Track driving. I would love to have a PDK Carrera S or 4S coupe in my garage. Maybe some day I will.

Thanks to Pacific Porsche for the great opportunity to test drive the new 2009 PDK Porsche. I eventually get back to my lunch and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon with the band, GPX friends and a very pleasant day.

11 The Circuit My Porsche Upbringing by Roger Lubeck... LOL It all started when I got my first — I was 15 and got my license. I fell in love with how inexpensive the VW was to operate and work on. As a kid, I got into modifications to impress my friends. They all had VWs fixed up to suite their own style.

Over the years I've had lots of different VWs — from a 1950 Split Patrick Long Roger Lubeck Sascha Massen Window to a '57 Oval Window, a 27-window bus and, finally, a '64 Notchback. The Notchback was only sold in Europe (and I still have it after 25 years and many configurations).

After years of wishing, saving my pennies and putting my son through college (he's still there working on his Masters), my natural progression was from VW to Porsche.

I started the search for my Dream Porsche! I didn't want to just get any Porsche, it had to be everything I wanted! I loved the look of the '73 Carrera RS (the Duck Tail is so unique), but to get an original I would have had to sell my house and live in the car (but the don't fold down)! Next was the Carrera SC. I thought when I thought that it could be the one! I just love the shape of a Carrera body, just like a beautiful women (curves in all the right spots)! I never thought Porsche could make a more perfect car! Then the 993 Carrera S came out and I almost died. They did it! They made a Porsche even sexier than anything previous.

And did I look for my perfect 993 S. I thought: 2-wheel drive, a 1998 (last year), dark blue with black interior and a 6 speed. I looked everywhere and in everything. In 8 months only 3 cars came close, but not close enough. I broadened my search. Second choice was Silver and Black. After another 6 months I found it — a 1997 Carrera 4S down in Del Mar. I drove it on two separate occasions and really liked how the 4S handled. The rear end stuck when I jumped on it, unlike the earlier 911s I had driven! I thought this might be more forgiving, especially my first Porsche. I new I had to go to the track and learn how to drive!

I made the right choice — the car is everything I wanted! I've made just a few modifications: lowered, sport suspension, factory sport seats, Euro lenses, Euro RS steering wheel, alum pedals, 2S rear grille, silver hood badge, window tint and some carbon fiber. Oh, and don't let me forget an award winning detail!

My car makes me smile like nothing else I have ever had! (except my son, of course). European car's are in my blood! Germany has a little town "Lubeck." Someday I will go to claim it as my own and Porsche will be the official car!

Ed: This article was supposed to go along with the cover photo on the October Circuit. Sorry Roger, I hope you don't mind getting a page in two different issues.

12 November 2008 Rod Williams – Detail Specialist Rod Williams joined PCA about 2 years ago, and has been a regular at our events ever since. He always shows up in this fabulous looking 1990 Guards Red 911 C2 (see front cover). It's easy to pick out... just look for the most radiant car in the lot.

Rod often shows up with various members of his family, which is always a pleasure. At our last two Queen Mary Concours, Rod's car won its class and, in 2007 took home the People's Choice Award.

It's not surprising to find out that what Rod does for a living is running a business called Rod's Detailing. His motto is: "I'll make your car shine at your place or mine."

Rod tells us: "I enjoy working in his yard, helping out around my neighborhood, and interacting with all of my neighbors. I also enjoy spending time with my family and the different activities we par take in but, my ultimate satisfaction comes from keeping my girl squeaky clean — Ms Birdie.

On a Monday morning back in January 2006, I was surfing the net like I did every morning, but this Monday my luck changed when I saw the word “For Sale” on this beautiful Red 1990 Porsche. After picking myself up off the floor, I thought everyone must have been calling on this car.

After catching my breath, I called and, to my surprise, I was the first to call. We talked and as they say the rest is History. As for her name, Ms. Birdie, this car is beautiful and strong just like the lady she was named after, my Mom."

(Ed: If you're interested in an appointment for Rod's Detailing, give him a call at 310-749-9594)

13 BreakfastThe Circuit Club Meeting Report — Oct 4 by Pete Ross photos by Jimmie Mitchell & Skip Carter

The Breakfast Club Meeting held on the First Satur- day of October was greeted by a series of ominous and threatening clouds. On gloomy days like this, we often see many of our members non-Porsches adorning the parking lot, and many others choosing to stay home in their warm beds and not risk getting their Porsches wet by the potential rain.

Not on this day however. This gloomy day had an absolutely spectacular turnout (which we’ve almost become completely accustomed to). Grand Prix Region members show up every month with regularity, and Gloomy skies didn't daunt the spirit of GPX members. The parking lot was full many bring friends. Those in attendance are sure to have bonding opportunities with someone else if, for no other reason, the one primary fact that everyone Cyerra Haney they will ultimately encounter also love Porsches. What and her dad, Bill could be better than that?

Looking around the sunshine lacking parking lot, it was easy to check out GT2s, a GT3RS, Cayennes, Caymans, Carreras, Cabriolets, 914s, 944s, Turbos, 356s, 912s, all range of 911s, Boxsters, a Spyder and on and on and on — nothing but Porsches stretched out as far as the eyes could see. Brita Goldsmith and Hazel Hofsess collecting Anyway, October’s meeting was highly spirited as our money & making name badges for attendees members were able to partake in a huge raffles and give-a-way. Pacific Porsche's Carl Toffelmire and Lenny Yee showed up with a host of wonderful raffle items. Thank you very much Pacific Porsche. In addition, there was an assortment of raffle items brought by Skip Carter, Suesan Way, John and Joyce Perchulyn and Joe Bryant. A large number of our club members walked away carrying some very nice prizes.

Our Goodie Store is sporting some new attire, and 10 year member Reggie Garmon we’d like to compliment and commend DeJur Jones attending his first meeting and Bob Baddy for scoring those incredibly stylish Porsche shirts designed specifically for our female Newlyweds Greg and members. The bright sparkling shirts were the hit of Shannon White the Goodie Store.

Other highlights included a large number of potential new members that were in attendance, along with 10-year member Reggie Garmon, a Palmdale resident attending his first Breakfast Club. Our newest GPX members are Jack and Ginny Case, Not only are they Charter Members of PCA (their Boxster license plate sports "PCA in 55"), but Ginny won the grand raffle Dejur Jones showing new Lady's T now available from the GPX Goodie Store prize (see photo).

14 November 2008

Speaking of long-term membership, John and Patty Reilly, who we erroneous stated as 32 years members on their last anniversary, are actually 44 year members of PCA. We apologize for the previous error. John and Patty are hot on the heels of Jack and Ginny. The rest of us are hoping that we can not only own Porsches for as many decades, but enjoy them as much as these two couple do (personally, I’m still in my first decade of Porsche ownership, so I’ve got a ways to go to catch either of them). Jack & Ginny Case receiving Raffle Prize from Pacific Porsche's Lenny Yee Arturo Chaparro was also in attendance sporting the Paul Clewett (son of Richard) with Raffle prize he won brand Porsche Design 60th Anniversary watch that he won at last month’s Breakfast Club raffle. Remember, to win a prize, you must be present.

Others in attendance were Ruben Archilla, Bob Baddy, Gary Bengtson, Marc Bixen, John Blakely, Cleant Brown, Joe Bryant, Jeremy Campbell, Skip Carter, Elliott Chandler, Richard Clewett and his son Paul, Norma Ann Dawson, Steven Erickson, Bill and Cierra Haney, Richard Elliott, Bob Folkman, Albert Franco, Jimmie Mitchell, Marty Friedman, Robert Friedman, Gentry Humphrey Lee Gaucher, Steve Glas, Marty Goldberg, Marty and Brita Goldsmith, Rod Guyton, Hazel Hofsess, Alan Hosea, Gentry Humphrey, DeWayne Ichiria, Tommy Johnson, DeJur, Mike Jones, Jon LeCarner, Dal B. Lee, Roy Lock, Roger “Cover Boy” Lubeck, Frank Medrano, David and Susan Moard, Mitch Moreland, Pete and Margo Novak, John and Joyce Perchulyn, Nick Perdikaris, Marty Petcoff , Allan Rosenberg, Jack Mitch Moreland wearing a 1999 GPX Concours T-shirt Sciranka, Ron Shanon, Rennison Sherrett, Dan Stern, Steve Sweet, Mike Takaki, Peter Vasquez, Ron Wal- ecki, Robert Wessels, Greg and Shannon White (name change noted and congratulations), Rod Williams and Mike Wilson. If I inadvertently omitted or misspelled any names, my sincere apologies.

As you can see, we had a lot of members and potential members show up, and I’m sure that each and every 44 year PCA members John and Patty Reilly with Steve Carpenter, a one of them can tell you what a great time they had. neighbor they brought and one of our newest GPX members After the meeting, many members didn’t want to go home, so a large number caravanned over to the open house being held at Pacific Porsche. Once there, we were able to stuff ourselves with more food, gifts, mu- sic, a golf swing analysis, Haas Entertainment electron- ics, Porsche test drives and general fun.

If you missed it… you just flat out missed it. How about we see you next month? Newest GPX members, Ginny & Jack Case

Zone 8 Awards Banquet and President's Meeting

for informaton contact: Saturday — January 17th Michael Dolphin [email protected] Mariott Hotel, Marina del Rey Suesan Way [email protected]

This year end gala dinner has traditionally been a wonderful assembly of PCA members from regions throughout Zone 8.

Not only do the region presidents, webmasters and editors congregate, but people who have competed in the Zone 8 Competition Series in Autocross, Time Trial, Rally and Concours throughout the year are acknowledged.

Special awards are also presented in addition to a wonderful Silent Auction.

Last year PCA National President Prescott Kelly was in attendance. This event provides a rare opportunity to speak directly with many of the leaders of our zone and national staff... and it's a fun evening with great folk. November 2008

ASUDEC: Converting the Poor to Aid Givers by Norma Ann Dawson (with sidekick Suesan Way)

To achieve its goals and accomplish its mission, ASUDEC focuses itself on community projects that will, among other things, improve children’s education, provide micro credits and promote micro enterprise development with a special aim toward empowering African women economically, particularly in poor rural areas, and develop volunteer programs that bring youths from all over Africa and the world to share with one another how to reduce differences and build friendship to enhance local and global peace and social harmony.

ASUDEC avoids handouts in its approach to encourage self- promotion and constructive risk-taking. It has adopted one of its international partners Heifer International’s practice of passing on the gift. It has adapted that practice to the culture of African solidarity to promote an interdependent system of development.

In the case of its poultry project, ASUDEC, with the assistance of Heifer International, contributes from 2 to 10 hens per project beneficiary. When ASUDEC contributes, for example, 10 hens to a fam- ily, it deals with all the veterinary care for at least 12 months, the time necessary for the recipient to reproduce at least 300 hens and be convinced of the advantages of and adopt the good practices they are being taught. From the 300 hens reproduced, ASUDEC requires only 20 hens, 10 to support a new family in need and 10 to contribute to the ASUDEC’s enormous costs.

ASUDEC requests that each of its recipients who are benefited directly by its projects, contribute a small amount toward their community’s expenses. The extent to which an aid recipient is expected to contribute varies depending on a village’s needs. Each participating village elects a Local Sustainable De- velopment Council of ASUDEC that is responsible for managing the resources contributed by ASUDEC, and is accountable for those resources before the village assembly. Thus, ASUDEC’s recipients become aid givers, not only to other families, but also to their own communities.

Please join GPX in its efforts to be an aid giver by attending the annual Holiday Party on December 6, 2008. It will be an intimate and elegant event at the lovely Ladera Heights home of GPX member Bar- bara Gillam. Following a fabulous dining experience under the stars, you will be able to munch popcorn while watching adrenaline boosting race movies in a private big screen theater setting and reminiscing about the great times GPX has had this past year, while bidding for priceless mementos in GPX’s annual silent auction whose proceeds will benefit ASUDEC.
