2015 Awards Dinner Celebrating 35 Years 2015 Awards Dinner Celebrating 35 Years Welcome A Letter from the Chairman hank you for joining us at the EastWest Institute’s Annual Awards Dinner and celebrating our 35th anniversary. I am delighted to Twelcome the institute’s new CEO and President, Ambassador Cameron Munter. The world today presents a complex array of challenges. From China to Russia, the future of Iran after the nuclear deal and the rise of ISIS, to Afghanistan after the NATO drawdown, seemingly insurmountable issues abound. As a former diplomat who worked at the highest levels in Pakistan, Iraq, Serbia and other critical countries, Cameron is the right person to lead EWI forward into our next chapter. Cameron will initiate fresh approaches to conflict reduction and prevention in the 21st century, where problems are no longer solved by representatives of states alone. Under his leadership, the institute will anticipate issues and address them in unique and innovative ways, drawing on its reputation for independence, building trust, recasting issues and taking action. In recognition of what EWI stands for, we are also honored to present the John Edwin Mroz Global Statesman Award—recognizing an individual who exemplifies trust-building and is a catalyst for change— to Martti Ahtisaari, Former President of Finland, 2008 Nobel Laureate, and an EWI Board Member. President Ahtisaari has dedicated his life to conflict reduction and international mediation in crisis areas, whether as a senior Finnish public servant and President or in an international capacity, often connected to the United Nations. The EastWest Institute is looking forward to making a difference together in the world over the next 35 years. Thanks for all that you do to help pursue our mission. I know that we can count on your continued support. • Dear Senator
Dear Senator: We support, strongly and without qualification, President Obama’s nomination of Chuck Hagel to be the next Secretary of Defense. Most of us have known the Senator for a decade or more and consistently have found him to be one of the best informed leaders in the U.S. Congress on national security issues. Senator Hagel’s credentials for the job are impeccable. As a decorated Vietnam veteran, a successful entrepreneur in the private sector, and a two-term United States senator, he brings exceptional qualifications and experience to the Department of Defense, particularly at this time of budget constraint and challenges in reshaping America’s military power while keeping it strong for the coming decades. Senator Hagel’s political courage has impressed us all. He has stood and argued publicly for what he believes is best for the United States. Time and again, he has chosen to take the path of standing up for our nation, rather than the path of political expediency. He has always supported the pillars of American foreign policy: a strong military; a robust Atlantic partnership; a commitment to the security of Israel, as a friend and ally; a determination to stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons; and the defense of human rights as a core principle of America’s role in the world. We have spent most of our lives in the service of our country, deeply committed to America’s security and the example of our democracy. Many of us served in the U.S. armed services and most of us have served for decades as professional diplomats.

  • Threading the Needle Proposals for U.S
“Few actions could have a more important impact on U.S.-China relations than returning to the spirit of the U.S.-China Joint Communique of August 17, 1982, signed by our countries’ leaders. This EastWest Institute policy study is a bold and pathbreaking effort to demystify the issue of arms sales to Taiwan, including the important conclusion that neither nation is adhering to its commitment, though both can offer reasons for their actions and views. That is the first step that should lead to honest dialogue and practical steps the United States and China could take to improve this essential relationship.” – George Shultz, former U.S. Secretary of State “This EastWest Institute report represents a significant and bold reframing of an important and long- standing issue. The authors advance the unconventional idea that it is possible to adhere to existing U.S. law and policy, respect China’s legitimate concerns, and stand up appropriately for Taiwan—all at the same time. I believe EWI has, in fact, ‘threaded the needle’ on an exceedingly challenging policy problem and identified a highly promising solution-set in the sensible center: a modest voluntary capping of annual U.S. arms deliveries to Taiwan relative to historical levels concurrent to a modest, but not inconsequential Chinese reduction of its force posture vis-à-vis Taiwan. This study merits serious high-level attention.” – General (ret.) James L. Jones, former U.S. National Security Advisor “I commend co-authors Piin-Fen Kok and David Firestein for taking on, with such skill and methodological rigor, a difficult issue at the core of U.S-China relations: U.S.
