The Universal Ship Cancellation Society will hold its 55th convention at TEXPEX 2011 with the Dallas- based Fleet Nimitz Chapter playing host for the third time. The Nimitz Chapter previously organ- ized the 1994 and 2000 national USCS meets during TEXPEX. Founded in 1932, the USCS is an international philatelic organization of more than 1,100 members with an interest in postmarks and covers from all mar- itime services. This includes Navy ships of all coun- tries, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Navy bases, merchant ships with seapost and paquebot markings, related cachets, and other naval memorabilia. It is the only organization in the U.S. devoted to Navy and maritime covers, and is one of the oldest specialized postal history societies in the world. In 1983 a Dallas group formed USCS Nimitz Chapter No. 87 named after the famous Fleet Admiral of World War II, Chester Nimitz of Fredericksburg, Texas. During the 1990s Jackson Bosley of Texas served as the USCS president. While the society includes collectors of all ship mail (merchant ships and paquebot covers), the pri- mary focus is navy covers. If someone interested in Texas postal history looked at it that way, a collector could search for cov- ers with a Texas theme - ships bearing names of Texas cities, people or symbols. Not only do these collectors seek the older covers, they send requests for covers to be serviced by mail clerks from current ships. Regarding Texas - Of course, the most famous of them all is the Battleship Texas that has served as a memorial near the San Jacinto battlefield since its ded- ication in 1946. The first warship named Texas was a dreadnaught in 1899. By 1912 it had been replaced by the new USS Texas also known by its hull number BB 35. The TEXAS served as the flagship of the fleet in the 1930s and now rests at San Jacinto.

Shown in the right column are covers with Texas- related markings - the USS Dallas, USS San Jac- into, USS City of Corpus Christi and the Naval Station Ingleside at Corpus Christi. Page 6 Texas Postal History Society Journal, Vol. 36, No. 1 February 2011

The prob- a Crosby lem was the crew appeared in vari- cachet ous shades of brown since from the numerous dippings were needed to USS Texas outfit more than 1,000 men. The re- sults did not match and King dropped the idea. There was a controversy about naming nuclear submarine SSN 705. The initial suggestion was to name the submarine Corpus Christi similar in name to the 1944 frigate Corpus Christi (PF 44). Because of newly-found social sensitivities of the 1980s people said it would be wrong to name an attack submarine after the Latin phrase meaning “body of Christ.” So it was named after the town instead - USS City of Corpus Christi. The USS (CA 30) (1930) was a proud that served as relief flagship of the fleet. It carried President Franklin Roosevelt on several fleet reviews. The Houston was sunk at Sunda Strait on Feb. 28, 1942. It’s captain, Albert Rooks, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his battle actions when the war ended and survivors told their sto- ries after being freed from camps. Today there is the USS Houston (SSN 713), a nuclear attack subma- rine On this page is a chart showing Texas-related ships a collector might wish to collect.
