VOL VII NUMBER 2 MAY 2014 92ND ANNUAL MEETING - SAN ANTONIO

The 92nd Annual Meeting, April 4-6, at the Marriott Plaza San Antonio, was a resounding success. A special thanks to the host chapters, the William B. Travis Chapter #7, and the Alamo Chapter #40. Additionally, Melba Stout of the DRT Alamo Heroes Chapter headed up a group that provided a wonderful collection of Fiesta-oriented items for sale to our members and guests. As a special treat for the early arrivers on Friday, Bob Benavides of the Alamo Chapter #40 conducted a historic walking tour that included the La Villita location where Gen. Cos surrendered the Mexican garrison in Bexar in December 1835, and all the historic places around Alamo Plaza where the battle took place. Over 40 SRT members and guests participated. After the very successful tour, the hospitality suite afforded refreshments and camaraderie for members and guests. The San Antonio River Walk proved popular for a relaxed evening of dinner and more fellowship. A very special thanks to the SRT Hospitality Committee that always exceeds expectations! Another treat on Saturday morning was the special display of copies of historic items from The Sons of the Republic of Texas / Kathryn Stoner O’Connor Spanish-Texas Collection housed at UTSA. Amy Rushing, Head of the Special Collections at UTSA Libraries, provided insight into the importance of the items. The Summerfield G. Roberts Award luncheon recognized Jeffrey Stuart Kerr for his award-winning book, Seat of Empire: The Embattled Birth of Austin, Texas; the -Lamar rivalry was at its height during the formative years of Austin, with almost fatal results for the newly established seat of government. You will want to read about the fascinating struggle, and, against all odds, survival and success. In the epilogue, Kerr quips about local pride in individualism, inspiring residents to encourage each other to “Keep Austin Weird”! Another highlight of the luncheon was the “Three Legged Willie Chapter Archives Award,” presented by award sponsor Dale Williamson. Dale is a direct descendant of Judge Robert McAlpin Williamson. Small, medium and large chapters were well-represented, and the competition was stiff. The respective winners were the Lone Star Chapter #58, Conroe/ cont. pg. 3 PRESIDENT GENERAL’S MESSAGE the members of the Travis chapter for Ginn for his help in acquiring access their help and hospitality. to the Kathryn Stoner O’Connor I am honored to have been elected Spanish-Texas Collection for display your President General for the coming during the weekend. Thanks to all chapters participating in this annual award. The William G. Bachman Award recognized the chapter with the highest percentage of member growth, and the winner was the newest chapter, the James George Chapter #59, Athens. Keep up the good work! The strength of any organization is its membership; new members and retention of existing members are critical to our continued success. The President General’s List honors those members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, out of their love of Texas and their desire to promote the purpose, mission and goals of The Sons of the Republic of Texas. Those honored members were: George Harcourt, Sam Hopkins, John Knox, David Martin, Fred Mead, Bob Steakley, Dale Williamson, Mike Wilson and Mike Young. Thanks to these men for their tireless efforts to promote Texas history and to keep SRT in the public limelight. The evening Awards Banquet was the culmination of the meeting, with many well-deserving individuals receiving recognition reserved especially for them. Texas music legend K.R. Wood delighted dinner guests with a variety of Texas music; K.R. was nominated in December and elected as an honorary member at the members’ afternoon business meeting, with his induction to be held at the 93rd Annual Meeting in 2015. Thanks and congratulations to K.R.! After dinner, the 2012-2014 Executive Committee was recognized for their service. District Representatives were given Certificates of Appreciation for their service over the past two years, and Arthur Evans, Gulf Coast District Representative, received the District Representative of the Year Award. A highlight every year is the induction of honorary members. This year, two especially deserving individuals were awarded honorary membership for their years of publicly promoting Texas history and The Sons of the Republic of Texas. Among his many community service projects, Dean Bass took the lead in getting the Spirit of Texas Bank to become the Grand Sponsor for the dedication of the Lone Star Monument and Historical Flag Park on April 21, 2011. In December 2005, Craig Campobella had a vision of the park; despite five years of challenges and obstacles, the opening of the park became a reality, now enjoyed by countless Texans as they travel IH-45 through Conroe. The park displays 13 historic Texas flags that tell the story of the Texas revolution; for those passersby who stop to enjoy the educational venue, they will see the historic bronze, “The Texian,” and the Campobella bust of Dr. Charles B. Stewart. Thank you, Dean and Craig, for all that you have done and continue to do for Texas and SRT. John Homman was one of two outstanding members receiving the Distinguished Service Award. John was instrumental in the chartering of the Lone Star Chapter #58, Conroe/The Woodlands; he has continued to give his time, energy and resources to SRT. As Chairman of the Information Technology Committee, John and the committee make sure that the SRT website is current and user-friendly. Thanks to John, SRT has a significant and positive presence on the various social media sites, informing the public of historical dates and activities that often create new member interest. Thanks and congratulations to John. William D. “Buddy” Power, Northeast District Representative and newly elected Secretary General, received the Dis- tinguished Service Award for his service to the organization. SRT’s presence around the state is important, and certain geographic regions are often forgotten. Individuals like Buddy make certain that SRT is alive and well in areas where there were no major battles for Texas independence; however, the pioneers who lived in those areas were just as important to Texas’ success as a republic and as a state. Members in northeast Texas and Marshall, home of the Edward Clark Chapter #18, keep Texas history alive by participating in annual parades and providing educational programs that remind the public of their Republic of Texas heritage. Buddy has led this charge. The installation of the 2014-2015 Executive Committee and District Representatives preceded the final honors of the evening. Congratulations to President General Robert Kendall, KSJ, and the new officers and District Representatives of The Sons of the Republic of Texas! In the rebirth, the S.R.T. has had many members renew their lapsed memberships. I would like to thank the chapters of the organization for making this happen. I would also like to thank the Speakers Bureau for speaking to the schools and civic organizations for furthering the history of The Sons of the Republic of Texas and the history of the Republic of Texas. You never know where you might find a new member, young or old! As always, members are welcome to attend the executive committee meeting each quarter; the June 7th meeting will be held in Bastrop, Texas. I am looking forward to keeping the history of this great State of Texas alive by perpetuating the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved and maintained the independence of Texas. Let us all look forward to this! God Bless Texas! 3 cont. from pg. 3 92ND ANNUAL MEETING - SAN ANTONIO Jacinto,” a mark of honor originated and established by General in 1843, during his tenure as President of the Republic of Texas. SRT revived the custom and established eligibility requirements: one must be an active member, either by qualifying bloodline or as an honorary member; in addition, he must have performed outstanding service or contributed to the proud heritage of Texas. Two such gentlemen were nominated and elected last year, for investiture at the 2014 Annual Meeting. Tom Houston is descended from Col. Almanzon Huston, Quartermaster General of the Texas Army. He is a life member, more than 40 years a member of the San Jacinto Chapter #1, Houston; Tom has promoted SRT and Texas history for many years, serving his chapter, district and the SRT Executive Committee. Charlie Fogarty is an honorary member, recognized as an honorary member of both the Sam Houston Chapter #38 and the Lone Star Chapter #58. In 2009, he was inducted as an honorary member of the national organization. Charlie is a tireless promoter of Texas history, often portraying Sam Houston in front of school children, historical societies, civic groups and other historical and heritage societies. Congratulations to Sir Knight Houston and Sir Knight Fogarty! Enjoy the many photos showcasing our award winners!

6 2014 SRT TEXAS HISTORY ESSAY CONTEST SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS Recently, an old Houston, Texas newspaper revealed that as early as 1940, the Sons of the Republic of Texas were awarding scholarships to local students who participated in the Texas History Essay Contests. This means that the SRT has offered scholarships through its essay contests for 74 years. This is a significant accomplishiment for the non-profit SRT, because it demonstrates the long time committment of the SRT in supporting students seeking higher education. One of the purposes of the Annual SRT Texas History Essay Contest is to assist and encourage graduating seniors to pursue their college education at an institution of higher learning. It is hoped that the topic chosen will inspire the thinking of our youth, who will assume the responsibility of leadership for the conduct of our affairs on local, state, national and international levels in the near future. This year the Texas History Essay topic was “ The Seige and Battle of the Alamo”. The SRT received 45 essays from all over Texas and the states of Minnesota, North Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont and Wyoming. Three students who entered their essays were selected as scholarship winners. Each student received a Commemorative Medal, a Commemorative Plaque, a special Texas Flag flown over the State Capitol and a Commemorative “Come And Take It Cannon Ball” which had been fired at Gonzales, Texas along with a Scholarship Check to fund their college education. During the San Jacinto Day Ceremonies on April 21, 2014, Sir Knight Robert Kendall, KSJ, President General of the SRT and Denton Bryant, KSJ, Chairman of the SRT Texas History Essay Contest Committee, assisted by Vice President, Bob Steakley, presented the awards to three students. The First Place Winner was Austin Ackerman from College Station, Texas and a graduating senior. He received $3,000 and will use his funds to attend Texas A & M University where he plans to major in Kinesiology. The Second Place Winner was Hunter Corb who is a graduating senior at Seven Lakes High School in Katy, Texas. Mr. Corb received a $2,000, and he plans to use the funds to attend Texas A & M University and major in the Arts and Sci- ences. The Third Place Winner was Margot Brose. She received a $1,000 and is a graduating senior of Northstar Academy in Evanston, Wyoming. She plans to use the funds to attend Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she will pursue a major in International Relations to become a diplomat. Due to the distance of the awards ceremony from her home, Miss Brose was uable to attend, and her awards were mailed to her in Wyoming.

FLAGS! FLAGS! FLAGS!

On Tuesday, May 13, 2014, the students at Keefer Crossing Middle School, in New Caney, Texas, were presented with a day full of flag programs. Mr. Fred Mead, president of the Lone Star Chapter #58, was instrumental in introducing the school to the SRT Speakers Bureau and their programs. Mr. Tom Green, KSJ, chairman of the SRT Speakers Bureau, got together with history teacher Mr. Clayton Kinsfather to arrange to present flag programs to the entire school. Mr. Kinsfather is the Teacher of the Year for Lone Star Chapter #58. Mr. Green arrived at the school around 6:30 a.m. to meet with the teacher and to set the flags up in the school gym for the first flag program at 7:30 a.m. Mr. John Meredith, former president of the Lone Star Chapter and the Lone Star District Representative, arrived in frontier clothing and helped give the first two flag programs. Every school needs a teacher like him.

ROSS MEMORIAL

Well over 100 Ross family members, Former Texas Rangers and Sons and Daughters of the Republic of Texas gathered in Oakwood Cemetery in Waco, Texas on January 18 to honor and remember Shapley and Catherine Ross, sons Peter and L.S. “Sul” Ross. Catherine was remembered with a DRT Citizen medallion, and Shapley, Peter and Sul were remembered with Former Texas Ranger Association and The Sons of the Republic of Texas medallions. All three of the men’s tablets were also marked with the Masonic Logo. These three men all served as Captains in the Texas Rangers; this is exceptional. Peter and Sul served as Sheriff in McLennen County. Sul went on to become a Senator and Texas Governor. At this time, we know of no other Texas Governor who served as a Ranger. After his service as Governor, Sul Ross became president of the struggling Texas A & M College. While at A & M, he set new standards, hired better teachers, built dorms and instructional buildings. He turned A & M around to become one of our leading universities in Texas today. The elite drill team and honor guard from A & M known as the “Ross Volunteers”, were present and gave a great sense of honor and dignity to the memorial. Sul Ross will always be remembered at the Texas A & M University. We give great thanks to the “Ross Volunteers” for coming and honoring the Ross family with their presence. The Ross family will never be forgotten by any of us.
