This concept acknowledges that disaster risk is not distributed evenly across a population or a place. Because poor neighborhoods overall have fewer resources and more limited social and political capital than their more affluent counterparts, they face greater challenges in post-disaster recovery. Damage due to natural disasters is modulated by social factors such as income, race, ethnicity, religion, age, health, and disability status. Because poor people are more likely to live in low-quality housing, they are at greater risk for damage from high winds, waves, flooding, or tremors (Peacock et al. -

AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE PARK BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE CITY OF GALVESTON AND THE CAVALLA HISTORICAL FOUNDATION CONCERNING OPERATIONS WHEREAS, the Park Board of Trustees of the City of Galveston (Park Board) is a governmental entity created by statute and charged with the management of Seawolf Park (Park) on Pelican Island, including certain assets found within the Seawolf Memorial Plaza/Museum; and WHEREAS, the Cavalla Historical Foundation (CHF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, established in 1999 with the purpose of managing, restoring, preserving and displaying USS Cavalla and USS Stewart (Vessels), as well as other donated artifacts, and including the recruitment of volunteers and fundraising for these purposes; and WHEREAS, there are two (2) Navy contracts (No. N00024-03-C-0201 and No. N00024-03-C- 0202), (Navy Contracts) signed June 30, 2003 by the Park Board and CHF that donated two Naval Vessels, USS Cavalla (SS-244) and USS Stewart (DE-238) in joint ownership to the Park Board and CHF; and WHEREAS, in the Navy Contracts the Park Board and CHF agreed to 1) assume ownership, custody and control of the Vessels, 2) operate the Vessels as a museum and memorial on static display at the Park, 3) preserve and maintain the Vessels in a good state of repair, 4) allow the government reasonable access to inspect the Vessels on an annual basis, 5) take all steps necessary to comply with instructions from the Government, 6) maintain General Liability Insurance for the museum artifacts of an amount not less than $1,000,000, and to split the -

Just prior to reporting to Guantanamo Bay he was command- ing officer of the USS Mazama, an ammunition ship. Captain Holley did post-gradu- ate work in marine engineering and is presently a member of the Engineering Society of Detroit. Maybe a passionate curiosity for the past and also a vulnerability to poetry … poetry of images revealing the beauty and mystery of the world … W[I] am very moved by … art that … expresses the tragedy of man’s ephemeral condition” (de Menil 1983:50). At the time, Dominique de Menil was working with Renzo Piano on plans for The Menil Collection, the museum that would house the couple’s collection and manifest its poetry (Fig. 1). Thoughtful and meticulous, Dom- inique de Menil labored over every detail of the design and, when construction was complete in 1987, the installation of the collec- tion as well (Fig. 2). Her goals were clear: “I would like my collec- tion to be displayed in such a way that it opens new vistas, that it reveals ‘Terra Incognita’—islands beyond” (ibid.). The Menil Collection, with its 16,000 objects, is but one out- come of this French couple’s vision and philosophy. Intertwining art, social activism, and a profound spirituality, the de Menils left an indelible mark on their adopted city of Houston, both in the campus that houses their museum and related galleries and cha- pels, and in the effect their philanthropic projects had on various institutions in the city. -

Concrete ship - Wikipedia Page 1 of 6 Concrete ship From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Concrete ships are built of steel and ferrocement (reinforced concrete) instead of more traditional materials, such as steel or wood. The advantage of ferrocement construction is that materials are cheap and readily available, while the disadvantages are that construction labor costs are high, as are operating costs. (Ferrocement ships require thick hulls, which means extra mass to push and less space for cargo.) During the late 19th century, there were concrete river barges in Europe, and during both World War I and World War II, steel shortages led the US military to order the construction of small fleets of ocean-going concrete ships, the largest of which was the SS Selma.[1] Few concrete ships were completed in time to see wartime service during World War I, but during 1944 and 1945, concrete ships and barges were used to support U.S. and British invasions in Europe and the Pacific. Since the late 1930s, there have also been ferrocement pleasure boats. Lambot's boat was featured in the Exposition Universelle held in Paris in 1855. Beginning in the 1860s, ferrocement barges were built in Europe for use on canals, and around 1896, an Italian engineer, Carlo Gabellini, began building small ships out of ferrocement. -

Galveston’s Balinese Room Galveston’s Balinese Room Born: 1942 – Died 2008 The Balinese Room was built on a peer stretching 600 feet into the Gulf of Mexico. Robert Nieman © All photos courtesy of Robert Nieman unless otherwise noted. For fifteen years, Galveston’s Balinese Room was one of the most renowned and visited gambling casinos in the world. Opened in 1942 by the Maceo brothers, it flourished until 1957, when the Texas Rangers shut it down permanently as a gambling establishment. In the times that followed, the building served as a restaurant, night club, and curiosity place for wide-eyed visitors. Mainly, though, it sat closed with its door locked—yes, it had only one door.
