Travel and transport Freiburg is located in the very southwestern corner of Germany, in the outskirts of the Black Forest and close to the borders of France and Switzerland (maps.google.de/maps). A map of the inner city can be found on the inside cover of the Freiburg Official Guide in your conference pack. Arrival by plane: The airport closest to Freiburg is Basel/Mulhouse. From there, a regular bus service runs to Freiburg (http://www.freiburger-reisedienst.de/en/airportbus/timetable.php). You can also make special arrangements and book a shuttle service (http://www.freiburger-reisedienst.de/de/ airportservice/information.php). Other options are Frankfurt (most recommendable), Stuttgart, or Zurich airports, from where you can catch a train to Freiburg – about a two-hour journey from each of the three airports (for train times, check www.bahn.de). Arrival by train: Freiburg is connected to the German high speed railway system (ICE). Check www.bahn.de for the quickest connection from your place of departure. Central station Conference venue Underground parking facilities (directly underneath the conference venue) Take a leisurely walk (8-10 min) from the Central Station to the University: Exit through the main entrance of the central train station Freiburg Hauptbahnhof and cross the street. You are now in Eisenbahnstraße. Many of the conference hotels are located on or near this street. Follow Eisenbahnstraße for about 300 m until you reach Rotteckring. Cross at the traffic lights and turn right. Go straight along Rotteckring. After another 300 m you will reach the conference venue Kollegiengebäude I (KG I). On the way you will cross Bertoldstraße (this is the street with the tram lines) and walk past Platz der Alten Synagoge (essentially, a large lawn on your left). Use the first entrance to KG I, which takes you directly to the conference office, or just walk past the building and use the main entrance just around the corner – right between the statues of Homer and Aristotle. Alternatively: Take a tram from the station bridge and get off at Stadttheater. Tickets are available from vending machines on board. Arrival by car: Freiburg is close to the motorway A5 (Basel-Karlsruhe-Frankfurt). Take exit “Freiburg Mitte” for the city centre. Since the University buildings are located in the city centre, most of the locations described below are within easy walking distance. Public Transportation System Freiburg has a very efficient public transportation system, comprising trams and buses. A single one-way ticket within Zone 1 (Freiburg City) is 2 €. Alternatively you can buy an all-day-ticket, called REGIO24, which is 5 € for one person and 8 € for 5 people. No matter which tram or bus you take, in order to get to the conference venue you have to get off either at Stadttheater or Bertoldsbrunnen. Timetable information for tramways and buses can be found at: http://efa.vag-freiburg.de/vagfr/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?language=en An overview over Freiburg Bus and Tram Lines can be found on page 102 of the Freiburg Official Guide in your conference pack.
