When Two Become One: Sacramental Woes And Theological Anxiety In Medieval Representations Of Marriage Abstract This dissertation traces the long, winding, and problematic road along which marriage became a sacrament of the Church. In so doing, it identifies several key problems with marriage’s ability to fulfill the sacramental criteria laid out in Peter Lombard’s Sentences: that a sacrament must signify a specific form of divine grace, and that it must directly bring about the grace that it signifies. While, on the basis of Ephesians 5, theologians had no problem identifying the symbolic power of marriage with the spiritual union of Christ and the Church, they never fully succeeded in locating a form of effective grace, placing immense stress upon marriage’s status as a signifier. As a result, theologians and canonists found themselves unable to deal with several social aspects of marriage that threatened this symbolic capacity, namely concubinage and the remarriage of widows and widowers.

VOLUME 14 NUMBER 2 2006 The history of marriage and the myth of Friedelehe RUTH MAZO KARRAS The idea that Friedelehe and Muntehe constituted two distinct forms of Germanic marriage was based upon an attempt to reconstruct common Germanic culture with scraps of evidence from widely different times and places. A thorough re-examination of the sources for the institutions that were posited, based on this now outmoded methodology, reveals no evidence that transfer of Munt, or guardianship, distinguished between two different types of marriage, except perhaps in Lombard Italy, under the influence of Roman law. The idea that marriage with a dos is a different institution from marriage without one is not attested until the Carolingian period. Although it is possible to trace a trajectory of developments in the social, institutional, and intellectual histories of marriage from at least the eleventh century to the present, the project of writing a history of marriage much before this period is not so straightforward.

This article is concerned with explaining the popularity of such marriages. We seek to complement accounts that stress kinship obligations and socio-economic strategy, by showing that transnational marriages are also motivated by the emotional ties of kinship. Central to this analysis is a focus on the Urdu/Panjabi concept of rishta, which conveys ideas about a ‘good’ match and about emotional connections between people.

It was here between the walls of this palace that the life of the monarch, his family and his court was concentrated, bringing together almost all of what Saint-Simon called “la France”, its government and administration, and creating a model that was to impose its style on all of Europe. While this model derived many of its rules from older traditions, notably those of the court of Bourgogne exalted by the court of Spain, it was under Louis XIV, “the greatest king on earth”, in Versailles, that the court and hence the codes of court life acquired that singular sumptuousness designed to impress ordinary mortals with the fact that the life lived around their monarch was of a higher essence than that of other mortals, however powerful, noble and rich they might be.
