Brides Taking Cues from the Royal Wedding Bridal Guide • 1C www.crossville-chronicle.com • Tuesday, January 31, 2012 Bridal Guide Multi-million dollar weddings 2012Though it’s difficult to call it official, the 2004 wedding of Vanisha Mittal, daughter of steel tycoon Lakshmi Mit- tal, is considered the most expensive wedding in history. With a final tab of $60 million, the wedding included invi- tations mailed in silver boxes, rooms at a five-star Paris hotel and performances by pop singer Kylie Minogue. Americans might recall a more recent and extravagant wedding, that of former first daughter Chelsea Clinton, whose 2010 wedding reportedly cost between $3 to 5 mil- lion. A similar price tag was given to Beatles legend Paul McCartney in 2002 when he married former model Heath- er Mills. Unfortunately, that cost did not guarantee marital bliss, as the couple separated in 2006, eventually divorc- ing in 2008. In his formal plan for the institution, Joseph Henry outlined a program that included the following statement: "It is proposed to publish a series of reports, giving an account of the new discoveries in science, and of the changes made from year to year in all branches of knowledge." This theme of basic research has been adhered to through the years by thousands of titles issued in series publications under the Smithsonian imprint, commencing with Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge in 1848 and continuing with the following active series: Smithsonian Contributions to Anthropology Smithsonian Contributions to Botany Smithsonian Contributions to the Earth Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to the Marine Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to Paleobiology Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology Smithsonian Folklife Studies Smithsonian Studies in Air and Space Smithsonian Studies in History and Technology In these series, the Institution publishes small papers and full-scale monographs that report the research and collections of its various museums and bureaux or of professional colleagues in the world of science and scholarship. The publications are distributed by mailing lists to libraries, universities, and similar institutions throughout the world. Papers or monographs submitted for series publication are received by the Smithsonian Institution Press, subject to its own review for format and style, only through departments of the various Smithsonian museums or bureaux, where the manuscripts are given substantive review.

When Two Become One: Sacramental Woes And Theological Anxiety In Medieval Representations Of Marriage Abstract This dissertation traces the long, winding, and problematic road along which marriage became a sacrament of the Church. In so doing, it identifies several key problems with marriage’s ability to fulfill the sacramental criteria laid out in Peter Lombard’s Sentences: that a sacrament must signify a specific form of divine grace, and that it must directly bring about the grace that it signifies. While, on the basis of Ephesians 5, theologians had no problem identifying the symbolic power of marriage with the spiritual union of Christ and the Church, they never fully succeeded in locating a form of effective grace, placing immense stress upon marriage’s status as a signifier. As a result, theologians and canonists found themselves unable to deal with several social aspects of marriage that threatened this symbolic capacity, namely concubinage and the remarriage of widows and widowers.

VOLUME 14 NUMBER 2 2006 The history of marriage and the myth of Friedelehe RUTH MAZO KARRAS The idea that Friedelehe and Muntehe constituted two distinct forms of Germanic marriage was based upon an attempt to reconstruct common Germanic culture with scraps of evidence from widely different times and places. A thorough re-examination of the sources for the institutions that were posited, based on this now outmoded methodology, reveals no evidence that transfer of Munt, or guardianship, distinguished between two different types of marriage, except perhaps in Lombard Italy, under the influence of Roman law. The idea that marriage with a dos is a different institution from marriage without one is not attested until the Carolingian period. Although it is possible to trace a trajectory of developments in the social, institutional, and intellectual histories of marriage from at least the eleventh century to the present, the project of writing a history of marriage much before this period is not so straightforward.

PM World Library The Royal Wedding – What a Project! www.pmworldlibrary.net David L. Pells PM World Collection Editorial The Royal Wedding – What a Project! Project Management for Weddings and a Tribute to my Wife the Project Manager David L. Pells Managing Editor Introduction On Friday 29 April 2011, Prince William of the British Royal Family, son of Prince Charles and the late Lady Diana, grandson of Queen Elizabeth II, married Catherine Middleton in Westminster Abbey Cathedral in London. It was a spectacular wedding, with all the pomp and circumstance of his father’s famous wedding to Lady Di over thirty years ago. The wedding was attended by 1,900 invited guests, including royalty, political leaders from around the world, celebrities, personal friends and family members. While several hundred thousand people lined the streets of London in celebration, and in Hyde Park and Trafalgar Square to watch the proceedings on big screens, an estimated 2 billion worldwide watched via satellite and television coverage. [1] Since the official engagement was announced in November 2010, following their vacation together in Kenya the month before, [2] many in the project management community recognized the forthcoming royal wedding as a project of tremendous personal, royal and national significance. In the months leading up to the wedding, as various aspects of the occasion emerged and as anticipation and excitement grew, it became clear that this was a large and complicated project, one that required much planning and control. And according to Royal staff and those who have been previously involved in royal events, who were interviewed by various media, nothing was to be left to chance.

This article is concerned with explaining the popularity of such marriages. We seek to complement accounts that stress kinship obligations and socio-economic strategy, by showing that transnational marriages are also motivated by the emotional ties of kinship. Central to this analysis is a focus on the Urdu/Panjabi concept of rishta, which conveys ideas about a ‘good’ match and about emotional connections between people.

It was here between the walls of this palace that the life of the monarch, his family and his court was concentrated, bringing together almost all of what Saint-Simon called “la France”, its government and administration, and creating a model that was to impose its style on all of Europe. While this model derived many of its rules from older traditions, notably those of the court of Bourgogne exalted by the court of Spain, it was under Louis XIV, “the greatest king on earth”, in Versailles, that the court and hence the codes of court life acquired that singular sumptuousness designed to impress ordinary mortals with the fact that the life lived around their monarch was of a higher essence than that of other mortals, however powerful, noble and rich they might be.
