New Distribution Records for Flowering Plants in Antigonish County, Nova Scotia

GARBARY* Department of Biology St. Francis Xavier University P.O. Box 5000 Antigonish, Nova Scotia B2G 2W5 Distributions of over 50 species of flowering plants from Antigonish County, Nova Scotia are presented based on collections made primarily over the last ten years. Some of these are new county records representing range extensions from the western and central parts of the province. Many are new records for the eastern mainland and north shores of the province. Rare species discussed are Asclepias incarnata, Comandra umbellata and Triosteum aurantiacum. Several species, including Asparagus officinalis, Centaurea cyanus, Lathyrus latifolius, Lysimachia nummularia, and Origanum vulgare, likely represent recent or older garden escapes. Sedum ochroleucum is reported outside of cultivation for the first time from Nova Scotia, based on a single population that has been established for at least two years. On décrit la répartition de plus de 50 espèces d’angiospermes dans le comté d’Antigonish (Nouvelle-Écosse), d’après des collectes effectuées essentiellement les dix dernières années. Il s’agit parfois de nouveaux cas signalés dans le comté, représentant des prolongements de l’aire de répartition depuis l’ouest et le centre de la province et, dans bien d’autres cas, de nouveaux signalements pour l’est de la péninsule et les côtes nord de la province. Mason-Gamer Abstract.—The Lonicera clade Caprifolium contains 25 species distributed around the Northern Hemisphere, including in the Mediterranean climates of California and Europe.∼ We sequenced the second intron of LFY to help resolve relationships within the clade where the internal transcribed spacer and chloroplast markers had previously failed to do so. Divergence Downloaded from time estimation and biogeographic analyses over the posterior distribution of dated trees suggest that a widespread an- cestor was distributed across the Northern Hemisphere some 7–17 million years ago. Asian species form a sister group to a clade in which the European species are sister to the North American species. We use climatic niche modeling and divergence time estimates to explore the evolution of climate variables in the group. -

In this plan, we will briefly introduce the physical and biological setting, past land use, and current uses of the Domain. The remainder of the plan consists of an assessment of the forest, which has been divided into six conservation areas. These conservation areas contain multiple management compartments, and the six areas have similarities in topographical position and past land use. Finally, the desired future condition and project summary of each conservation area and compartment has been outlined. Background The University of the South consists of an academic campus (382 acres) with adjacent commercial and residential areas (783 acres) that are embedded within and surrounded by diverse natural lands (11,838 acres). The term “Domain” is used interchangeably to describe both the entire ~13,000 acres and the 11,800-acre natural land matrix (also referred to as the “Greater Domain”). -
Phylogeny and Phylogenetic Taxonomy of Dipsacales, with Special Reference to Sinadoxa and Tetradoxa (Adoxaceae)
PHYLOGENY AND PHYLOGENETIC TAXONOMY OF DIPSACALES, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO SINADOXA AND TETRADOXA (ADOXACEAE) MICHAEL J. DONOGHUE,1 TORSTEN ERIKSSON,2 PATRICK A. REEVES,3 AND RICHARD G. OLMSTEAD 3 Abstract. To further clarify phylogenetic relationships within Dipsacales,we analyzed new and previously pub- lished rbcL sequences, alone and in combination with morphological data. We also examined relationships within Adoxaceae using rbcL and nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences. We conclude from these analyses that Dipsacales comprise two major lineages:Adoxaceae and Caprifoliaceae (sensu Judd et al.,1994), which both contain elements of traditional Caprifoliaceae.Within Adoxaceae, the following relation- ships are strongly supported: (Viburnum (Sambucus (Sinadoxa (Tetradoxa, Adoxa)))). Combined analyses of C ap ri foliaceae yield the fo l l ow i n g : ( C ap ri folieae (Diervilleae (Linnaeeae (Morinaceae (Dipsacaceae (Triplostegia,Valerianaceae)))))). On the basis of these results we provide phylogenetic definitions for the names of several major clades. Within Adoxaceae, Adoxina refers to the clade including Sinadoxa, Tetradoxa, and Adoxa.This lineage is marked by herbaceous habit, reduction in the number of perianth parts,nectaries of mul- ticellular hairs on the perianth,and bifid stamens. The clade including Morinaceae,Valerianaceae, Triplostegia, and Dipsacaceae is here named Valerina. Probable synapomorphies include herbaceousness,presence of an epi- calyx (lost or modified in Valerianaceae), reduced endosperm,and distinctive chemistry, including production of monoterpenoids. The clade containing Valerina plus Linnaeeae we name Linnina. This lineage is distinguished by reduction to four (or fewer) stamens, by abortion of two of the three carpels,and possibly by supernumerary inflorescences bracts. Mississippi Natural Heritage Program Special Plants - Tracking List -2018
MISSISSIPPI NATURAL HERITAGE PROGRAM SPECIAL PLANTS - TRACKING LIST -2018- Approximately 3300 species of vascular plants (fern, gymnosperms, and angiosperms), and numerous non-vascular plants may be found in Mississippi. Many of these are quite common. Some, however, are known or suspected to occur in low numbers; these are designated as species of special concern, and are listed below. There are 495 special concern plants, which include 4 non- vascular plants, 28 ferns and fern allies, 4 gymnosperms, and 459 angiosperms 244 dicots and 215 monocots. An additional 100 species are designated “watch” status (see “Special Plants - Watch List”) with the potential of becoming species of special concern and include 2 fern and fern allies, 54 dicots and 44 monocots. This list is designated for the primary purposes of : 1) in environmental assessments, “flagging” of sensitive species that may be negatively affected by proposed actions; 2) determination of protection priorities of natural areas that contain such species; and 3) determination of priorities of inventory and protection for these plants, including the proposed listing of species for federal protection. Zhu1, M.C. Roos2, C.E. Ridsdale2 Key words Abstract Based on herbarium collections, the Malesian species of the genus Lasianthus are revised. A total of 131 species including 5 subspecies and 6 varieties are recognized from the Malesian region, of which 41 species, Lasiantheae 3 subspecies and 3 varieties are described as new, and 3 new combinations are made for varieties. 22 species Lasianthus names and 15 variety names are reduced to synonyms. Ten species names and 2 varieties are treated as dubious Malesia mainly because their types cannot be traced. Additionally, 11 species are further excluded from Lasianthus. Program www.mass.gov/nhesp State Status: Endangered Federal Status: None Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife DESCRIPTION: Broad Tinker’s-weed (also known as Wild Coffee or Horse-gentian), a member of the honeysuckle family, is a coarse herb which grows up to 13 dm (4 feet) tall but is usually less than 9 dm (3 feet) in Massachusetts. One to six stout stems grow from a common base. Leaves are obovate or obovate-oblong, 10-22 cm (4-9 in.) long, 4-10 cm (1.5-4 in.) wide, abruptly narrow below the middle, fused around the stem, and usually softly pubescent beneath. Purplish brown or greenish sessile (stalkless) flowers grow in groups of 1 to 4 from each axil. The sepals are 10-18 mm (.25-.75 in.) long, finely and uniformly pubescent on back and margin, and often glandular. The slight fleshy fruit is greenish orange to orange-red and very conspicuous in summer/fall. Holmgren, Noel H. 1998. The Illustrated Companion to Gleason and Cronquist’s Manual. SIMILAR SPECIES: Wild Coffee, Triosteum aurantiacum (also called Tinker’s-weed or Horse- gentian), is very similar to Broad Tinker’s-weed, and the connector can be seen around the stem connecting the two have been considered varieties of the same species bases of the leaves.
