Degree awarded September 2017 ii © 2017 Nicole Kessell iii THESIS ABSTRACT Nicole Kessell Master of Arts Department of International Studies September 2017 Title: Migration, Identity, and the Spatiality of Social Interaction in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman Utilizing Henri Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space as a framework for exploration, this research is concerned with the social and cultural impacts of modernization and international migration to Muscat, Oman focusing on the production of space and its role in the modification and (re)construction of culture and identity in the everyday. While the Omani state is promoting a unifying national identity, Muscat residents are reconstructing and renegotiating culture and identity in the capital city. Individuals are adapting and conforming to, mediating, and contesting both the state’s identity project as well as to the equally, if not more, influential social control that is the culture of gossip and reputation. -

Although the company has, since its foundation, pursued a policy of laying down the infrastructure, which can serve as a foundation for transforming waste management in the country; it only took over the management of the healthcare waste sector on January 1, 2012, after the administration of the sector has been transferred from the Ministry of Health to be’ah. -

JICA selected and dispatched a study team headed by Dr. Hani Abdel-Halim at Katahira & Engineers International from January 2004 to February 2005. The team held discussions with the engineers at Directorate General of Roads, Ministry of Transport and Communications, as well as other officials concerned, and conducted field surveys, data analysis, Master Plan formulation and Feasibility Study. Upon returning to Japan, the team prepared this final report to summarize the result of the study. I hope that this report will contribute to the enhancement of friendly relationship between our two countries. Finally, I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the officials concerned of the Sultanate State of Oman for their close cooperation extended to the study. Alongside this background, this study assesses the aware- ness and quality of knowledge regarding climate change in Muscat governorate, Oman. A survey of 350 randomly sampled respondents was conducted using a standard questionnaire. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. This questionnaire was administered to respondents who were evenly distributed among the six divisions (Wilayat) of Muscat governorate in Oman while descriptive statistics were the main analysis techniques. Results have revealed that public awareness is fairly high despite some limitations on the knowledge on the causes and prevention of climate change. Regression analysis finds that gender, years of education, and income are sig- nificant factors that determine the level of awareness. Climate change is an area that is in need of publicity to help the public make informed decisions in its adaptation and mitigation. Results fur- ther indicate that most of the respondents have fair general knowledge about the subject.
