Strain JSM 100118T was able to grow with 0–13 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 2–5 %), at pH 5.5–10.0 (optimum pH 7.5) and at 5–50 6C (optimum 30–35 6C). The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The predominant respiratory quinone was menaquinone-7 and the major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0,C16 : 0 and C16 : 1v11c. The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, an unknown glycolipid and an unknown phospholipid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 35.9 mol%.

Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity comparisons, strain Ca7T was grouped in the genus Bacillus, most closely related to Bacillus nanhaiensis JSM 082006T (100 %), Bacillus barbaricus V2-BIII-A2T (99.2 %) and Bacillus arsenicus Con a/3T (97.7 %). Moderate 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities were found to the type strains of the species Bacillus gelatini and Bacillus rigui (96.4 %), Bacillus macauensis (95.1 %) and Bacillus solisalsi (96.1 %). All these species were grouped into a monophyletic cluster and showed very low sequence similarities (,94 %) to the type species of the genus Bacillus, Bacillus subtilis.Thequinonesystemof strain Ca7T consists predominantly of menaquinone MK-7. The polar lipid profile exhibited the major compounds diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. In addition, minor compounds of an unidentified phospholipid and an aminophospholipid were detected. No glycolipids were found in strain Ca7T, which was consistent with the lipid profiles of B.

The DNA G+C content of strain L5T was 45.6 mol%. The major menaquinone was MK-7. The major fatty acids were iso-C14 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0, and the major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. In addition, strain L5T had different characteristics compared with the other Bacillus strains such as pink colony colour, low growth temperature and low nutrient requirement. The results indicate that strain L5T represents a novel species of the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus cavernae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is L5T (5KCTC 33637T5CCTCC AB 2015055T). The genus Bacillus belongs to the family Bacillaceae,order (Claus & Berkeley, 1986; Holt et al., 1994; Rheims et al., Bacillales,phylumFirmicutes, and was first proposed by 1999; Yumoto et al., 2004; Lim et al., 2007; Zhang et al., Cohn (1872) with Bacillus subtilis as the type species.

DuTKY Agent, Division of Fruit Insect Investigations, Bureau of Entomology and Plan Quarantine, United States Department of Agriculture, and research assistan in soil microbiology. New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station INTRODUCTION The existence of diseases among larvae of the Japanese beetle {Popillia japónica Newm.) and the part they play in the reduction of the populations of these larvae has been realized for some time. Probably the most important from the standpoint of the natural con- trol of the insect are the so-called milky diseases. Two distinct milky diseases are recognized, referred to hereafter as type A and type B, whose causal agents are two closely related spore-forming bacteria. The author proposes the name Bacillus popilliae, n. sp., family Bacillaceae, for the species causing the type A disease and Bacillus lentimorhusj n. sp., for the causal agent of the type B disease. A search of the literature relating to insect diseases as well as that on spore-forming bacteria has failed to reveal any forms similar to these two bacilli. Hawley and White ^ indicated that the diseases of the Japanese beetle could be classified, on the basis of the gross appearance of affected larvae, into three groups, the black group, the white group, and the fungus group. They considered that the majority of the dead larvae found in the field belonged to the black group. They concluded that there was probably only one disease present among larvae of the white group. This disease was characterized by the presence of large numbers of a microorganism in pure or nearly pure culture, which was probably the causal organism.

Accepted 29 December, 2011 To study the biodiversity of halophilic bacteria in a protected wetland located in Loukkos (Northwest, Morocco), a total of 124 strains were recovered from sediment samples from a marsh and salterns. 120 isolates (98%) were found to be moderately halophilic bacteria; growing in salt ranges of 0.5 to 20%. Of 124 isolates, 102 were Gram-positive while 22 were Gram negative. All isolates were identified based on 16S rRNA gene phylogenetic analysis and characterized phenotypically and by screening for extracellular hydrolytic enzymes. The Gram-positive isolates were dominated by the genus Bacillus (89%) and the others were assigned to Jeotgalibacillus, Planococcus, Staphylococcus and Thalassobacillus.
