The Star Almanac[A5] The Star Almanac for Land Surveyors Her Majesty’s Almanac Office NP321 - 2017 electronic edition About e-SA Bookmarks Page Finder Stars by Constellations THE STAR ALMANAC — ELECTRONIC EDITION ABOUT the e-SA 2017 This electronic edition of The Star Almanac for Land Surveyors (e-SA) is the paper edition in electronic form which is produced by H.M.Nautical Almanac Office part of the UK Hydrographic Office. The e-SA is the SA with bookmarks and extra “pages” that provide links that allows easy navigation to all the tables, examples and sections of the explanation. The pages are most usefully viewed as facing pages so both left-hand and right-hand pages are visible at the same time. If the option ‘Return to the previous page viewed’ is readily available, then this will make returning to the previous page e.g. the Book mark pages that lists all the sections and tables or the Page Finder, which gives links to all the tabular material, easy. The list of stars by constellations with Bayer letter and star number gives links for navigating to the correct left-hand page that lists the right ascensions. This star finder is listed over two pages. There are also navigation boxes to these initial pages at the bottom of each page. Pages may also be navigated to from the bookmark-sidebar.

  • The Interaction of the Solar Wind with the Interstellar Medium W
THE INTERACTION OF THE SOLAR WIND WITH THE INTERSTELLAR MEDIUM W. I. Axford An invited review INTRODUCTION The interaction between the solar wind and the inter- stellar medium has been a topic of interest for many POSSIBLE years [Davis, 1955, 1962; Parker, 1961, 1963; Axford TERMINAL SHOCK et al., 19631 , but progress has been rather slow largely 100 AU I because of the paucity of relevant observations. Recently, however, the situation has changed as a result of the clear evidence for the penetration of interstellar gas into the inner solar system obtained from OGO 5 [momas and Krassa, 1971; Bertaux and Blamont, ,’. \ 19711. Furthermore, the prospect that there will be space probes traveling toward the outer regions of the solar system within a few years (see fig. 1) has created a need for a better understanding of the subject so that the most effective use can be made of the missions. This review is a survey of the work, both published and unpublished, that has been carried out up to the Figure 1 Spacecraft trajectories for the proposed time of writing. To the best of our knowledge, the “Grand Tour ’’ missions to Jupiter-Saturn-Pluto bibliography is complete up to mid-1971. First, the (1976-1 9 77), and Jupiter- Uranus-Neptune (19 79). me expected characteristics of the solar wind, extrapolated trajectories carry the spacecraft in the general direction from the vicinity of the earth are described, and several of the projection of the solar apex into the ecliptic simple models are examined for the interaction of the plane, the direction in which the distance to the solar solar wind with the interstellar plasma and magnetic wind termination is a minimum.

These data have been taken at 0.6 arcminute spatial resolution and 0.1 km s−1spectral resolution, providing an unprecedented view of the molecular clouds and gas of the Southern Galactic Plane in the 109–115 GHz J = 1–0 transitions of 12CO, 13CO, C18O and C17O. We present a series of velocity-integrated maps, spectra and position-velocity plots that illustrate 6 Galactic arm structures and trace masses on the order of ∼10 M per square degree; and include a preliminary catalogue of C18O clumps located between l = 330–340◦.

  • Astronomy and Mathematics in Ancient China: the Zhou Bi Suan Jing
This is a study and translation of the Zhou bi suanjing, a Chinese work on astronomy and mathematics which reached its final form around the first century AD. The author provides the first easily accessible introduction to the developing mathematical and observational practices of ancient Chinese astronomers and shows how the generation and validation of knowledge about the heavens in Han dynasty China related closely to developments in statecraft and politics.
