‘Spotlight on Dyslexia’ – events across Scotland

The following events are taking place across Scotland during Dyslexia Awareness Week. Some of the events take place just before or after the official Dyslexia Awareness Week which is 6 – 10 November. All of these details can be found at: www.dyslexiascotland.org.uk

Saturday 3rd November – Dyslexia Scotland Forth Valley The branch will have an information table in Falkirk’s Howgate Centre. Feel free to stop and have a chat. 10.00am – 4.00pm Howgate Centre, High Street, Falkirk FK1 1HG

Wednesday 7th November – Dyslexia Scotland South East Adult Dyslexia Information Evening Join the branch and a panel of speakers for a discussion on dyslexia. Panel members will be Gillian Lawrence (Community Learning and Development), Paul Murphy (the Big Plus), Holly Curless ( University Student Support) and a Student Support team member from a local FE college. 7.30pm – 9.00pm Drummond Community High School, 41 Bellevue Place, Edinburgh EH7 4BS

Wednesday 7th November – Dyslexia Scotland West Lothian Addressing Dyslexia Toolkit Pamela Deponio from Edinburgh University will talk about the new updated online Addressing Dyslexia Toolkit. Wednesday 7th November – Dyslexia Scotland Inverness Meeting topic to be confirmed Culduthel Christian Centre, Castle Heather Room (Church House), Culduthel Avenue, Inverness IV2 6AS 7.00pm – 9.00pm Thursday 8th November – Dyslexia Scotland Lochaber Assessment for children Come along to hear Bernadette Cairns, Senior Manager of Additional Support Needs at Highland Council, talking about the assessment process for children. 7.00pm An Cala, West Highland College (formerly Lochaber College), Fort William (opposite Morrison’s petrol station).

6th – 9th November – Dyslexia Scotland Perth and Kinross Libraries open their doors to dyslexia Dyslexia Scotland Perth and Kinross branch and Perth and Kinross Libraries have arranged a series of ‘drop in’ sessions in libraries throughout the county.

Anyone who has an interest in dyslexia – children, adults, parents and professionals – can go along to their local library and get information about the wide range of books there are for all types of readers. They range from large type to listening books in mp3 and cd format. There is something for everyone!

Other events The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia Thursday 8 November 6.00 – 8.00 pm, Film Theatre (GFT) The Big Picture skilfully explores the complex and often challenging world faced by people with dyslexia. The film focuses on teenager Dylan as he shares his early struggles in school and prepares to begin studies at the college of his choice. Interviews with other young people with dyslexia, as well as highly accomplished businesspeople identified with the learning disability, including Richard Branson, Charles Schwab, and California’s Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, are seamlessly incorporated into the story. Focusing on the positive aspects of dyslexia and incorporating creative animation sequences, James Redford’s film emphasizes specific areas where those with dyslexia excel and suggests thoughtful strategies for their academic success. This screening will be followed by a panel discussion exploring these themes. http://www.glasgowfilm.org

Spotlight on Sport! In line with this thrilling year of Sport, come and toast Dyslexia Awareness Week in style with a glass of bubbly, in the company of great representatives from the sporting world, all of them Ambassadors for Dyslexia Scotland…be mesmerised by Keith Cook, fencing champion and inspired by Paul McNeill, Scottish Football Association and Chris Tiso of Tiso Group Limited. Spotlight on young people! Cathy McPhail, highly acclaimed writer of gritty urban thrillers that tackle emotive contemporary issues, will be running inspiring sessions based around the novel ‘Hide and Seek’ published by Barrington Stoke- independent Edinburgh publisher dedicated to cracking reading. Celebrate Learning – Spotlight on Youth! Young adult learners celebrate their achievements with Paul McNeill from the Scottish Football Association and Arnaud Touanga, the rapper Real A. Hear other learners’ stories and join in the celebration. Lunch provided. Spotlight on authors! Jenni Brown, literary agent and founder of Edinburgh Book Festival is in conversation with two fantastic authors who write for young people – Nicola Morgan and Sally Gardner. Both authors have dyslexia and will share their experiences. Be ready to be inspired! Sally’s new novel, Maggot Moon, has a dyslexic hero at its heart and she will be demonstrating her enhanced i-book. Refreshments. Book sales and signings. Families aged 10+ will love this! Spotlight on young people! Sally Gardner will be sharing her personal experience of dyslexia and talking about her most recent novel, Maggot Moon- a speculative fiction novel set in a reimagined 1950s dictatorship with a dyslexic hero at its heart.
