Purpose of report To inform the Executive of the findings of the Central Library Conservation Plan 2. Summary 2.1 The report describes the background to the Conservation Plan, presents its key findings and indicates how it can be progressed. 3. Background 3.1 A Conservation Plan is an approach to exploring the sustainable use of a cultural, or ecological asset. Its purpose is to establish and describe the historic importance of the asset and its setting: to analyse the effects of changes that have been made in the past; and to put forward policies for conservation, repair, and restoration of its historic character and features. 3.2 The Central Library conservation Plan is intended to advise future proposals for the Library and represents a first step towards Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Scotland grant applications. 3.3 In commissioning the Conservation Plan, the Culture and Leisure Department saw it as an important first step in taking forward the work which started during the late 1980s to modernise and remodel the Central Library. 3.4 Opened in 1890, Edinburgh’s Carnegie Central Library is a landmark building, located close to the heart of the world heritage site. It is one of the Council’s major cultural assets, Its importance within the city’s cultural infrastructure is set to increase with Edinburgh’s designation as the first UNESCO City of Literature. 3.5 The Library contains unique collections of national importance centred on those of the Edinburgh Room and Scottish Library, and houses Scotland’s busiest lending library. -

Criteria for Selection Rules for the Compilation An attempt was made to include in this sourcebook readings that provide intellectual depth and matter for thought. Most of the selected readings are well of the Catalogue known; a few, however, are little read but included as gems that deserve to be known. Panizzi's letter to Lord Ellesmere, for example, reflects in miniature the British Museum whole of the Anglo-American cataloging experience. Inevitably, the selections have an Anglo-American bias; particularly notable by their absence are representatives of the Indian and German schools. Some restriction was necessary to keep the volume to a manageable size, and, since it was felt that the literature written in English and about the Anglo-American tradition would be of most immediate Editor's Introduction interest, it is this writing that is represented. ABSTRACT Founded in 1851, the Stourbridge School of Art offered instruction in drawing, art and design to students engaged in industries, especially glass. Using social history methodology and primary sources such as Government reports, local newspapers and school records, this thesis explores the school’s development from 1850 to 1905 and explicates its relationships with the local glass industry. Within the context of political, economic, social and cultural forces, the school contributed to the town’s civic culture and was supported by gentry, clergy and industrialists. The governing Council held public meetings and art exhibitions and dealt with management issues. Working class men attended evening classes. Women from wealthy families attended morning classes. -

General Notes: Emigrated to Pennsylvania. 3-John Hodgkin was born on 31 Oct 1701 in Shipston on Stour, Warwickshire and died on 9 Oct 1786 at age 84. Noted events in his life were: • Miscellaneous: Until 1931, Shipston on Stour was part of Worcestershire. John married Susanna Hitchman. They had three children: John, Susanna, and Thomas. 4-John Hodgkin1 was born on 25 May 1741, died on 31 May 1815 in Shipston on Stour, Warwickshire at age 74, and was buried on 4 Jun 1815. Noted events in his life were: • He worked as a Woolstapler in Shipston on Stour, Warwickshire. John married Elizabeth Gibbs1 on 28 Feb 1765. Elizabeth died on 29 Apr 1805. Year 4 have been learning about our Awesome Oceans and local fisher- man, Cameron, came in to show us our favourite species and they were all alive! Straight from the morning’s catch, he arrived excitedly to tell us some of what he knew as we were keen to listen to him and ask questions. We learnt so much about life-cycles, their habitats, mating, adaptations and we also got to handle some pretty big and live shell fish. It was so much fun! AN APPEAL TO ALL DOG OWNERS FROM THE EDITOR There’s no easy way of putting this, but despite previous complaints, some irresponsible dog owners are still allowing their animals to foul the grass verge beside the school. This is especially unpleasant and a potential health risk for school and pre-school children.
