Bazıları geriye dönmeyi arzularken, bazıları ise bulundukları yerde kalmakta ısrar ederek yeniden göç etmeyi reddetmektedirler. Bu arzular, Hayat Hikâyeleri: medya ve siyasi retoriğe yansımakta; yerinden edilmiş birçok Kıbrıslı insanın sadece siyasi gelecekle ilgili değil, kayıpları ve köklerinden koparılmaya dair kendi deneyimleriyle ilgili algılarını Kıbrıs Türk Toplumu şekillendirmektedir. The promotion of international religious freedom is one of the priorities of the European People’s Party (EPP) Group at the European Parliament. It is a priority for me, as Vice- Chairman of the EPP Group responsible for interreligious dialogue and intercultural activities – Jan Olbrycht MEP As there can be no security in Europe unless there is also security in the Mediterranean; likewise, there can be no security in the Middle East and North Africa or any other part of the world unless there is (also security and) full respect for religious freedom between Muslim majorities and other religious minorities. It should be stated that this kind of interaction also applies to interactions between other religious majorities and religious minorities. The EU has got to take this on board. Most Cypriots link the issue of displaced persons’ rights with the wrongs done to them by the other community; the loss of homes, property and livelihoods; ancestral lands; original habitats and cultural artefacts; and the social life that surrounded them. Thus, there are highly emotive, normative and personal sentiments surrounding the issue. These sentiments will not fade away quickly and probably will continue to frame collective imaginations even after a formal solution of the issue is attained, complicating the implementation of such a solution.

    1 HEIRS OF ANTIGONE: DISAPPEARANCES AND POLITICAL MEMORY Introduction On 17 August 1998 two middle-aged Greek Cypriot women, Androulla Palma of Peristerona village and Maroulla Shamishi from Nicosia, Cyprus, went secretly at dawn to a military cemetery at the outskirts of Nicosia. They had with them two heavy pickaxes. They started attacking a collective grave, murmuring miroloyia (mourning songs). After an hours’ hard work they had broken through the mar- ble slabs. Alarmed neighbours called the police, but not before the forewarned women had called the private television channels on their mobile phones. When confronted by the police and the army, the women said that they wanted their husbands. They said that they did not know whether their husbands were dead or alive since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus and its subsequent occupation, and they wanted to know whether their husbands were dead (as they had been told by some witnesses), or whether they were still missing, as claimed by the gov- ernment. The authorities told them that they had committed an offence, took them into police custody, where they were then questioned, but released. The incident made national headlines. Some said that the women were crazy, and craving publicity; others that their pain had driven them to such extremes. After 24 years their husbands were clearly unidentifiable. They were frightened, proud, and defiant about what they did. What had driven them to such extreme measures? On 21 August 1974, Turkish soldiers accompanied by Turkish Cypriots, arrested all the men and young boys remaining in the village of Ashia. On the same day, according to testimonies of eyewitnesses, 107 persons were loaded on 3 lorries and under guard by Turkish soldiers were driven to the Turkish quarter of Nicosia, Pavlides garage. The Turkish Cypriot police in charge of Pavlides garage selected 37 persons, below the age of 50, who were detained in the said garage. The remaining 70 civilians were not detained and orders were given to their guards to return them to Ashia, apparently due to their advance age but since then are considered to be missing persons. 2. In 2009, the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) conducted a search in the Ornithi area on the outskirts of Afania village, situated about 4 km west of Ashia. Four burial sites were disinterred, two of which were water wells and the sites of mass graves. The remains identified by DNA testing in those two mass graves has confirmed that they belong to the list of 70 civilians who were captured in Ashia on 21 August 1974. 3. Other evidence that emerged from the search in the Ornithi area was that the two mass graves had been previously exhumed. The human remains were removed and transferred elsewhere, apparently in an effort to hide the evidence of a mass murder.
