Published Applications (Open-source applications marked with a *)

 *LibraryFind (2006 – present) Role: Lead Software Architect; Developer Key Accomplishments: LibraryFind is a resource discovery tool that blends aspects of federated and localized search techniques to provide a powerful metasearch experience. As a research project, LibraryFind represents the first open source metasearch application developed within the library community. Technically, LibraryFind remains the only metasearch application that brings together search and coverage resolution, allowing the application to more intelligently present materials to users, as well as indicate to the user what materials they have access to via the library.

LibraryFind entered production at Oregon State University in early 2007 and has since been adopted by the University of Houston. Internally, LibraryFind is being testing for use by the University of Willamette, Middlebury College and the Internet Archive. Additionally, the Smithsonian has recently committed to implementing LibraryFind as its own internal research discovery tool. Website: http://libraryfind.org/

 MarcEdit (1999 – present) Role: Sole Developer Key Accomplishments: MarcEdit is a free operating system agnostic MARC editing suit designed to provide both high and low level MARC/XML development to both the novice and expert users. MarcEdit has a user-base number in the tens of thousands (~12,000 unique users utilize MarcEdit per month according to usage logs recorded by MarcEdit’s automatic updating module) with users throughout the United States at institutions like the United States Library of Congress, the University of Washington, the University of Michigan and Cornell University. Likewise, MarcEdit has a large international user-base with users from the National Library of Austrailia, the French International School in Hong Kong and the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences in Pakistan. In many respects, MarcEdit is a benchmark for other vendor-based metadata software packages in that MarcEdit provides: 1) MARC Editing functionality, including the ability to move between charactersets (something only MarcEdit does), provides a MARC text editor, a built-in scripting language. 2) Z39.50, OAI, SRU and OpenSearch functionality to allow users to retrieve and capture metadata from thousands of sources. 3) XML API that allows users to move seemlessly between XML and non-XML metadata schemas. 4) Validation tools to provide a rapid method for record validation when dealing with large batch record sets.

A new milestone is produced annually with regular quarterly releases. MarcEdit also comes with an extensive help manual the covers some 400+ topics. Website: http://oregonstate.edu/~reeset/marcedit/html

 *oai gem (2008 – present) Role: Project Administrator Key accomplishments: Implemented support for libxml processing engine replacing the core REXML processing component. Libxml support allows the oai component to leverage an enterprise class XML processing library improving efficency and scaleability of the tool. Website: http://rubyforge.org/projects/oai/

 rzoom gem (2008 – present) Role: Senior Developer Key accomplishments: Implemented support for the Z39.50 batch request protocol allowing requests to retrieve all items within a set. Previously, the approach required multiple requests which had an adverse impact on both the speed of the component, as well as the server being queried. Website: http://rubyforge.org/projects/ruby-zoom/

 * .NET OAI Harvester (2004 – present) Role: Sole Developer Key Accomplishments: The .NET OAI Harvester is an OAI Harvesting library written in C# to provide a flexible .NET component to ASP, ASP.NET and client-side developers needing to provide OAI harvesting. At the time of creation, it was the only such tool available for C# (.NET) developers. Website: http://sourceforge.net/projects/netoaihvster

 * EBSCO Records Wizard (2001 – 2006) Role: Sole Developer Key Accomplishements: The EBSCO Records Wizard is a collection of vbscripts that leverage MarcEdit’s MARCEngine to allow for custom modification of EBSCO records. The utility was designed for use with III systems, but can and has been adapted to work with many others. The program was really the first of its kind back in 2001 and really has become more of a mainstream utility in 2002-2003. However, since 2004, the application has primarily been utilized by smaller institutions or those unable to afford purchasing holdings or MARC data from an outside metadata vendor. Website: http://oregonstate.edu/~reeset/ebsco/html/

Internal Application Development for OSU:

 M-WEB (2002 – present) Role: Sole Developer Key Accomplishments: M-Web is a one of a kind metadata discovery and capture application that allows Reference Librarians to capture, edit and submit data into the Libraries catalog for electronic materials. This application has stream-lined the process of getting electronic data into the catalog and has allowed the library’s reference librarians to take a more active role in electronic resource selection and acquisition.

 Scale Calculator (2000 – present) Role: Sole Developer Key Accomplishments: The Scale Calculator is a simple web-based application designed to help map catalogers calculate scale between a variety of measurement units. Though olders, it still represents the only tool of its kind for cartographic metadata specialists. Website: http://oregonstate.edu/~reeset/html/scale.html

 Oregon DOQ Index (2002 – present) Role: Sole Developer Key Accomplishments: In Sept. 2002, the Oregon State Service Center finished processing the final DOQs of Oregon into the state plane projection. Unfortunately, the project was completed without a viable index for the materials. The Oregon DOQ Index fills this need by providing a georeferenced archive of data, allowing users to query areas by coordinates, quadrangle names or location. Within the application, there are links to MrSid images housed on the Oregon State Forestry Service’s web server as well as a link to the MrSid data for immediate download. Portland State University, Willamette University and the University of Oregon are currently utilizing this resource. Website: http://osulibrary.oregonstate.edu/Digital_Collections/gis/index/doq_index.html

R E S E A R C H:

 Federated Search/Personal digital libraries: OSU Libraries is currently working to be an abstract toolset to replace the distributed search model which is now required to query multiple Library databases to a hybrid approach which both harvests and performs distributed queries on multiple systems. The tools be generated will seek to address issues of ranking and relevance – in addition to exploring methods of simplifying the research process through the creation of personal or departmental digital libraries.

 Metadata Interoperability: As a metadata librarian, one of my chief concerns is how metadata created today will remain interoperable with the libraries systems in the future. Moreover, how to best repurpose current metadata to allow for the generation of surrogate metadata sets from a single master. Current veins of investigation include MARC and XML schema compatibility, building and supporting abstract tools to facilitate metadata repurposing.

 MarcEdit Development: At present, MarcEdit development is focused on the 5.x development branch. The current development branch includes the expansion of the application to include an open plug-in framework, expansion of the .NET and COM API, support for emerging service frameworks and improved non-MARC metadata editing functionality.
