L’anniversaire bisé- culaire de la campagne de France a servi de détonateur donnant corps à ce vaste projet, pour lequel la région Champagne-Ardennes souhaitait offrir à un large public des évoca- tions historiques propres à susciter un regain d’intérêt vers des combats dont les noms furent longtemps présents dans la mémoire populaire, entretenus par les chansons de Béranger autant que par les séduisantes lithographies de Charlet et de Raffet. Ainsi l’écho des noms de Champaubert, Montmirail ou Fère-Champenoise traversait le temps, portés par une note moins cruelle que ceux de Leipzig, de la Moskowa ou encore celui d’Eylau, connus par leurs sanglantes hécatombes, victimes innombrables dont le sang laissait à nu tant de veuves et d’orphelins dans nos villes et nos provinces. La campagne de France fut une conclusion à la campagne d’Allemagne, projetant les alliés sur Paris avec l’abdication de Napoléon 1er à Fontainebleau le 11 avril de cette année 1814. Son empreinte sur la nation française demeurait profonde, dans son admi- nistration, dans ses institutions, et spécialement pour les professions de santé dont l’organisation générale fut fixée par plusieurs lois en 1803. Cet aspect réglementaire codifié dans l’exercice des praticiens, autant que dans l’accès à ces professions, eut une portée novatrice ressentie dans l’Europe entière, en concomitance avec l’essor de la médecine clinique de l’École de Paris, et celui de la chimie thérapeutique de laboratoire.     SURGEONS Philibert Joseph Roux (1780–1854) He´le`ne Perdicoyianni-Pale´ologou Summary: Philibert Joseph Roux (1780–1854), a French surgeon, was a student and friend of Marie Xavier Franc¸ois Bichat, the father of modern pathology and histology. He was assigned as a surgeon to the Hoˆpital Beaujon (1806), the Hoˆpital de la Charite´ (1810) and to Hoˆtel-Dieu de Paris (1835), where he succeeded to Guillaume Dupuyrten, a French anatomist, as a Chief Surgeon. Roux is best known for having performed the surgical repair of a cleft palate and for having been the first surgeon to stitch a ruptured female perineum. His contribution to surgery has also included the publication of Quarante anne´es de pratique chirurgicale. Roux was awarded the grade of Chevalier of the National Order of the legion of Honor and that of Officer. He also served as a President of the Academy of Sciences. He died of a stroke on 3 March 1854. Philibert Joseph Roux was born on 26 April 1780 at Medical studies Auxerre, a commune in the Bourgogne region in north-central France.     Medical History, 2009, 53: 253–270 Jean-Baptiste Sarlandie`re’s Mechanical Leeches (1817–1825): An Early Response in the Netherlands to a Shortage of Leeches TEUNIS WILLEM VAN HEININGEN* Introduction At the end of the eighteenth century there was a rapidly growing demand for leeches in Europe. Western European and Central European freshwater species had been mainly used until then but now more and more different species were introduced.1 England imported large numbers from Eastern Europe and the Levant, and Pondicherry in Southern India was an important centre for the shipment of these animals whose application was considered a mild form of bloodletting.2 In the autumn of 1825 the Algemeene Konst- en Letterbode, a Dutch weekly journal, drew attention to a shortage, informing its readers that large numbers, kept for medical purposes, had died without an apparent cause,3 possibly through an unknown infective agent. It also printed information by a German pharmacist from Kassel on the proper method of keeping leeches alive as long as possible in large aquaria, by including water plants.4 One solution to the problem had already been invented—the artificial leech of Jean- Baptiste Sarlandie`re. At their annual general meeting, held on 21 May 1821, the officers of the Dutch Society of Sciences (Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen, founded in 1752), on learning of Sarlandie`re’s invention through Martinus van Marum, the Society’s secretary, decided to hold a competition on its serviceability.5 They were persuaded by the increasing demand for leeches, as well as by the fascinating and pro- mising aspects and originality of Sarlandie`re’s invention.
