Situated on the plains of the river Saraswati on the western bank of the famous Brahm Sarovar, the foundation stone of the University was laid on 11th January 1957 by the Late Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India. The University which started with focus on Sanskrit and Indic Studies took a big leap forward in 1961 by transforming its initial unitary character into a multi-faculty university. Today the University has 46 Post Graduate Teaching Departments and Institutes that Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of the offer 175 courses besides offering Ph. D. Indian Republic, laying the foundation stone of programmes. Presently there are 363 colleges from Kurukshetra University on 11th day of January, 1957 9 districts of Haryana affiliated to the University. Accredited with an 'A' grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Bangalore, the University today enjoys a sound reputation and is eagerly sought by seekers of quality education in conformity with international standards. The University offers students from throughout the region, state and nation a world-class education by providing learning experience designed to develop intellectual abilities, as well as, social moral and ethical values. The major focus of the University's goal and objectives is on achieving academic excellence Hon'ble Governor-Chancellor, Sh. Jagannath Pahadia, inaugurating the building of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Studies Centre through generation and dissemination of new knowledge without losing sight of the disadvantaged section of the society. Critical thinking and free exchange of ideas have been identified as key ingredients toward intellectual growth and national development. Together, the ten faculties on the campus with 46 departments provide a mix of professional, interdisciplinary and traditional courses. New programmes in emerging areas like Defence Studies, Nano Science & Technology, Genomics, Internet Journalism, International Hospitality Business Management, Women Studies, Forensic Science, Management of Development & Welfare Services, Microelectronics and VLSI design, Printing, Graphics & Packaging, Multimedia, etc. have been added to the list of courses on offer to the learners. The University has introduced several integrated as well as interdisciplinary courses in the recent past. A directed thrust is visible vi A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 1 3 KURUKSHETRA UNIVERSITY KURUKSHETRA in course curricula on issues like gender equality, population control, social justice, environmental protection, etc. In its commitment to quality sustenance and enhancement, the University monitors and evaluates its strategies on improving the process of teaching-learning and evaluation. To this endeavor, mechanisms like regular feedback from students and other stakeholders like alumni, industry, academic peers, employers, community, etc. are actively practised. Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), constituted as per guidelines of NAAC and UGC, is functioning Hon'ble Chief Minister, Sh. Bhupinder Singh Hooda releasing as a nodal body on the campus. a CD at the national seminar on Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Research is an integral and very significant activity of the University and the faculty members are involved in it with dedication. Faculty members have been successful in bringing in large funds from various agencies like DST, UGC, DRDO, DBT, UNDP, World Bank (TEQIP), etc. under different schemes. The number of FIST, SAP and TEQIP assisted departments in the University is now 12. The Department of Geophysics obtained a grant of 2.45 crore rupees under stage-I of FIST programme under DST. The Department of Electronic Science and the Department of Instrumentation have received further funding under the TEQIP Scheme by the World Bank. The University Institute of Engineering and Technology has received funds under TEQIP Scheme. The University has a separate Research, Development and Patent Council to promote, evaluate and review research activities being carried out by the faculty members. A Corporate Resource Centre is functional with a view to promoting industry-academia interaction and consultancy services. The Dr. Radhakrishnan Foundation Fund has been set up in the University for promoting research and other academic activities. It also provides financial assistance for awarding scholarships to the needy students. The University is amongst the largest providers of on-campus hostel accommodation to the students in the country. It has presently 24 well maintained hostels accommodating over 5800 students in as many as 12 hostels for men and 12 for women. A large shopping complex with about 50 shops, parks, banks and a post office cater to the needs of the students and the staff. A separate market, ATM facility, computer lab with internet connectivity is situated in the girls' hostels complex. The University has a well equipped Health Centre. A 24-hour Ambulance service is available in the Girls Hostel Complex.
