The Archaeological Reconnaissance and Computerization of Hobkirk’s Hill (ARCHH) project has begun initial field operations on this built-over, urban battlefield in Camden, South Carolina. We are using the professional-amateur cooperative archaeology model, loosely based upon the successful BRAVO organization of New Jersey. We have identified an initial survey area and will only test properties within this initial survey area until we demonstrate artifact recoveries to any boundary. Metal detectorist director John Allison believes that this is at least two years' work. Since the battlefield is in well-landscaped yards and there are dozens of homeowners, we are only surveying areas with landowner permission and we will not be able to cover 100% of the land in the survey area. We have a neighborhood meeting planned to explain the archaeological survey project to the landowners. SCAR will provide project handouts and offer a walking battlefield tour for William T. Ranney’s masterpiece, painted in 1845, showing Hobkirk Hill neighbors and anyone else who wants to attend on the final cavalry hand-to-hand combat at Cowpens, hangs Sunday, January 29, 2006 at 3 pm. [Continued on p. 17.] in the South Carolina State House lobby. Most modern living historians believe that Ranney depicted the uniforms quite inaccurately. Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton’s British Legion cavalry is thought to have been clothed in green tunics and Lt. Col. William Washington’s cavalry in white. The story of Washington’s trumpeter or waiter [Ball, Collin, Collins] shooting a legionnaire just in time as Washington’s sword broke is also not well substantiated or that he was a black youth as depicted. -
The Mutinies of 1781
THE MUTINIES OF 1781 Two mutinies of Continental Line troops occurred in January 1781 as a consequence of a lack of food, spirits, clothing, and pay for at least a year. While these harsh conditions were not unique for that time, the first mutiny led to but only a second that was dramatically quelled in short order. Six reGiments of the Pennsylvania Line were winter-quartered south of Morristown, New Jersey, under the command of General Anthony Wayne. On New Year’s Day, January 1, 1781, soldiers from the regiments of the Line mutinied to seek redress for their sufferinG state. DurinG the initial uprisinG, two officers, a Lieutenant White and Captain Samuel Tolbert, were seriously wounded, with a third, Captain Alan BittinG/Bettin of the 4th Regiment, killed. After taking a cannon, the mutineers marched directly to Princeton to air their grievances. There, a board of sergeants was selected, headed by Sergeant William Bouzar, which then met with the President of the Supreme Executive Council of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Joseph Reed. Following the initial meeting, Reed met with delegates of the Continental Congress at Trenton. Reed seems to have found their demands compellinG. Subsequently, the troop marched to Trenton for a continuation of the neGotiations. There, a Commission was created to consider mainly their one complaint concerning bounties paid out to enlistees in 1776 and 1777. Following the Commission’s review, immediate discharges were Granted to those three-year men whose enlistments were over. Each was promised partial payment of back pay in addition to items of need. -

Unfortunately, many Americans don’t know much about this battle that happened right in our back yard. They will likely never have a chance to visit and walk on the battlefield that was nothing more than a cattle pasture before January 17, 1781. But we all know that Gen. Daniel Morgan led the Patriots in this battle that was a turning point in the Revolution. This map will show where all of the Patriot troops were lined up for the battle, who all of the different types of troops were, and who the leaders of each group were. The NPS has asked you to create this map to help Americans who will never get to come to Cowpens to have an idea of what happened in this key battle. Forward 4 1979 marked the 200th anniversary of the Sullivan-Clinton expedition against those Iroquois nations that allied themselves with Britain and the Loyalists during the American Revolution. It is a little-understood (more often misunderstood) military incursion with diplomatic, economic, and decided geo-political consequences. Unfortunately, most people, including most municipal historians, know little about the expedition beyond what is recorded on roadside markers. In 1929, during the sesquicentennial celebrations of the American Revolution, the states of New York and Pennsylvania established a special commission that produced a booklet, sponsored local pageants, and erected many commemorative tablets in both states. -

BOOK REVIEWS AND BOOK NOTES EDITED BY NORMAN B. WILKINSON James Logan and the Culture of Provincial America. By Frederick B. Tolles. (Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1957. Pp. 228. $3.50.) The life of James Logan is the story of a poor Quaker lad of Scottish descent whom fortune snatched from obscurity for the role of Pennsylvania's foremost citizen during the first forty years of the eighteenth century. Born in Ulster, Ireland, in 1674, Logan's career began in 1699 when William Penn, recognizing his talents, chose the twenty-five year old schoolmaster of Bristol, England, for his secretary and land agent in Pennsylvania. Henceforth, the debt-ridden William Penn could be thankful that Proprietary affairs in Pennsylvania were entrusted to one as faithful and competent as James Logan. By writing a life of James Logan, Professor Tolles has fulfilled a need long recognized, for Logan's career is second in importance only to that of William Penn in the early history of Pennsylvania. Professor Tolles' fluent style makes for understanding and appreciation. The author's sympathetic treatment of his subject offers an avenue for considering Pennsylvania affairs from the Proprietary point of view. As Logan's activities reached out to include inter-colonial and imperial relations, the problems of the Empire are elucidated by his life. Logan's abiding interest in science and his accomplishments in this field illuminate the development of this branch of knowledge in America. The nature of Logan's duties at once brought him into conflict with the unicameral Pennsylvania legislature, which supposedly reflected the interests of the people at large. -

Matheson UE August 6th, 1977, marked the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Oriskany, one of the bloodiest battles of the American Revolution. Many important dignitaries participated in a daylong celebration at the Battlefield. A dramatic production of a stimulated battle and a re-enactment of the Ambush of Bloody Ravine was produced by the Brigade of the American Revolution. Inasmuch as Oriskany marked a major engagement of 1st Battalion, King's Royal Regiment of New York, and the greatest Loyalist victory in the north, I felt compelled to attend. Earlier pilgrimages to the Mohawk and to Oriskany had been in the company of a Loyalist friend and were the result of much prior reading. This time very many thousands were present. I discovered how greatly the telling of history is influenced by point of view and by audience. In 1642 Arent Van Curler reported seeing a majestic valley, the Valley of the Mohawk, which he described as "the most beautiful land that the eyes of men ever beheld". The Mohawk River starts as a woodland stream in the hills north of Rome, New York. For 150 miles it washes the soil of rich valley flatlands, it channels through a gorge at Little Falls, then pierces the mountains between Canajoharie and Fonda, emptying at last over the great falls into the Hudson River and on to the Atlantic. Experts claim that in proportion to the numbers of combatants engaged no other battle yielded more casualties. -

EVOLVING OUR HEROES: AN ANALYSIS OF FOUNDERS AND "FOUNDING FATHERS" IN AMERICAN HISTORY DISSERTATIONS John M. Stawicki A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2019 Committee: Andrew Schocket, Advisor Ruth Herndon Scott Martin © 2019 John Stawicki All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This thesis studies scholarly memory of the American founders and “Founding Fathers” via inclusion in American dissertations. Using eighty-one semi-randomly and diversely selected founders as case subjects to examine and trace how individual, group, and collective founder interest evolved over time, this thesis uniquely analyzes 20th and 21st Century Revolutionary American scholarship on the founders by dividing it five distinct periods, with the most recent period coinciding with “founders chic.” Using data analysis and topic modeling, this thesis engages three primary historiographic questions: What founders are most prevalent in Revolutionary scholarship? Are social, cultural, and “from below” histories increasing? And if said histories are increasing, are the “New Founders,” individuals only recently considered vital to the era, posited by these histories outnumbering the Top Seven Founders (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Paine) in founder scholarship? The thesis concludes that the Top Seven Founders have always dominated founder dissertation scholarship, that social, cultural, and “from below” histories are increasing, and that social categorical and “New Founder” histories are steadily increasing as Top Seven Founder studies are slowly decreasing, trends that may shift the Revolutionary America field away from the Top Seven Founders in future years, but is not yet significantly doing so.
