Bet on Winners and Maximize Your ROI

illions of people around the globe follow sports because it’s a pastime that inter- Bests them or they have a true passion for it. That’s particularly true right now, as fans worldwide over the past several weeks have been intensely focused on the 2018 FIFA World Cup. I am quite sure there have been wagers and bets, whether monetary or just for bragging rights, made between IAM members whose countries were lucky enough to gain a berth in the FIFA tournament. The IAM office is not immune to soccer fever, since the staff includes several football (soccer) fans—and some actual players as well—so our mornings usually start off with a conversation about the previous day’s match. I like sports as well, especially baseball, but follow other competitions only just enough to keep up with things and hold my own in conversations. My personal interests lie in following the world of finance and investments. I wouldn’t exactly describe it as a passion, but it does dominate my reading, as well as radio and Internet time. Most investing, particularly in equities and bonds, is seen by some as just another form of wagering or betting. That is probably true since, like betting on sports, there is no guar- antee you are going to win or increase the return on the investment (ROI) you make. But just suppose I told you there is one bet you can make that all but guarantees winners, and one area of investment that always brings a great return—and that would TERRY R. HEAD be education. IAM President My father always said, “The best investment you can make is in education! They can never take that away once you have it.” Ironically, he never finished the eighth grade; but maybe that’s why he placed such high importance on a proper education and lifelong learning. As the cover art suggests, this issue of The Portal is devoted to the IAM tuition assistance program. In the following pages are profiles of a dozen past scholarship recipients and beneficiaries of the Alan F. Wohlstetter Scholarship Fund (AFWSF). We thought it would be interesting to see where these individuals are now and how they have used their scholarship awards to further their education and advance their careers. The first thing you will likely note is that the majority are still employed within our industry—proving that we made a good bet in selecting them as scholarship recipi- ents. Clearly, we’re getting an excellent ROI for the scholarships, as these young people are contributing to the betterment of their respective companies and the industry as a whole, and we are confident they will continue to do so. Also in this issue, you’ll find a recap of the 2018Young Movers Conference (YMC) held in Belgium this past May (page 27). As in previous years, IAM proudly signed on as a sponsor and participated in this annual event, which is another example of our Association’s commitment to developing educational opportunities and widening career paths for the younger members of IAM and the industry. Of course, there are other interesting articles to be found in this issue. For ex- ample, FIDI and IAM recently announced collaboration on the Professional Coopera- tion Guidelines (PCGs) as a de facto industry standard for conducting international movements (see page 49). Or you might be interested to know that the data analytics capabilities of the IAM Mobility Exchange (IAMX) are a powerful tool you can use to effectively manage your Web presence and attract new business (page 41). Last but not least, please turn to page 21 to see what you might expect to experience during the upcoming IAM 56th Annual Meeting & Expo this October in Washington, DC. I do hope you are planning to attend, as it will be my last opportunity to preside over this yearly event as your president.

IAM General Counsel Emeritus Alan F. Wohlstetter, who passed away in November 2017, left behind a legacy that will benefit young movers for many years to come: The Alan F. Wohlstetter Scholarship Fund, established in 2009. For many students, tuition assistance provides additional security and support by helping to defray expenses associated with college and university studies. You can honor the memory of Alan F. Good News for Supply Chain and Logistics Careers

riting in Supply Chain Dive (supplychaindive.com), WKate Patrick reports that although enrollment in post- secondary institutions has declined over the past few years, the number of students choosing to major in transportation and materials movement is growing fast. This suggests grow- ing interest in supply chain and freight. Besides recruiting events and scholarships at universities, competitive salaries specifically in operations and transportation jobs are bumping up enrollment in supply chain-related fields. Many supply chain companies are outsourcing jobs to contractors because they don’t have a steady talent stream. In a report last year, DHL and the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated a growth spurt in the logistics industry but a sharp decline in available talent, predicting a severe talent shortage by 2020. Because there are so many jobs to fill, increasing interest in supply chain pays off for students when they graduate. Moreover, a Washington Employee Relocation Council study found compensation in the logistics industry increases with education level. Some trucking companies are now compen- sating truck drivers with salaries instead of an hourly wage, so a transportation degree could help future truck drivers land a higher salary when they graduate and set them up with bet- ter benefits. If supply chain-related majors continue to be so popu- lar, the talent shortage may dwindle (as may the truck driver turnover rate), a positive sign for the health of the industry. I am of the view that a university degree alone, as intended in Italy, is not the only way to grow. Much of a person’s success and growth must take place through long-term learning, both prior to and after the university experience. I think that this is the real recipe for a bright career.”

Emily Workman Tuttle Scholarship Recipient: 2015

Working together becomes second nature

A universal understanding of global mobility Cooperation between movers is crucial to success in the international relocation industry. But it’s not always as efficient as you’d like. Until now. FIDI has defined clear responsibilities for each partner, in each part of the move. The Professional Cooperation Guidelines are freely available to all FIDI and IAM movers. Case in point.

Young Movers Sample Belgian Hospitality at 2018 YMC

By Anne Van Gils, Chair YMC2018 Belgium

ow, what energy! It was amazing to see how 260 young Wmoving professionals from all around the globe spent four days at the Young Movers Conference as colleagues and friends. This vibe definitely only exists in our industry. Under an unexpected blue Belgian sky we welcomed about 40 different nationalities at the 24th Young Movers Conference in Brussels, May 3-6. It’s interesting to note that nearly a third of the participants were experiencing their first YMC. They were warmly welcomed, and it didn’t take long for them to feel a part of this exciting group of young professionals. That’s what the Young Movers Conference is all about: a welcoming and dynamic platform to network, find new partners and strengthen existing partnerships, and then return home with a stack of business cards and a lot of knowledge. Credit goes to our selection of top industry specialists and keynote speakers for sharing their insights, all linked to the rapid digitization of our industry and the resulting challenges. We were thrilled to have the full support of IAM. Brian Limperopoulos, Julia O’Connor and Margaret Kerr were part of the YMC gathering in Belgium. What would a stay in Belgium be without visiting the Port of Antwerp, Europe’s most central seaport? One of the best tour guides in the Port of Antwerp took us on an exciting boat trip around the port.

IAM: Moving Forward Together July/August 2018 • THE PORTAL 27 On Saturday a cocktail of social activities was on the pro- gram: We made our own chocolate and challenged each other during an interactive city game in the European capital. The die-hards embarked on an Airsoft adventure, and a real golf pro taught us the basics of the game during a golf clinic. Today, more than ever, young movers are ready for the future! We are looking forward to continued cooperation with our professional industry associations. Next year, YMC2019 will take us to Bucharest, Romania. The exact dates will be disclosed soon. Meanwhile, do you want to feel the Young Movers vibe? Join us on Facebook (Young Movers and IAM-YP) or have a look at https://youngmovers.eu/thiswaymc18/. Understanding Data Analytics in the Moving Industry, Part II: Google Analytics

By Ray da Silva, Mobility Exchange, LLC

n the May/June issue of The Portal, Iwe looked at the cost of acquiring a customer. In this article, we will look at a data analytics tool that can help us mea- sure and track how effective our website is at generating leads and engaging our customers. The first Web page went online in 1991. By 2000, companies in our industry were starting to put up websites. Initially, they were online brochures. There were a few pages linked to the “home page” that allowed businesses to present their company and services. Soon, it became possible to put mail to links that invited our customers to interact and do business with us through our websites. Today, many industry websites feature more sophisticated Web forms that allow the customer to interact with us quickly if not instantly. Some feature online virtual surveys, which can lead to instant move quotations. Our websites are Figure 1 thus now virtual storefronts. with good traffic is part of the equation. virtual marketplace was no different. At this point, there is no point debating whether showing up at the top of Google’s search results for a particu- lar search term works. We know that a top search ranking generates consumer click-throughs that can lead to PCIs. We now strive to understand how to gener- ate those click-throughs and measure the costs related to these efforts. This leads back to our previous article (see the May/ June issue of The Portal) about the cost of customer acquisition. If the cost of generating these click-throughs exceeds the eventual margin derived from the end customers of these click-throughs, their value is questionable. For most small to medium-sized enterprises in our industry, the time and resources required to understand and navigate this technical territory is beyond Figure 2 their means.

For example, placing an online click-through ad in a heavily trafficked site that focuses on real estate has obvious attractions for us. It is a tightly targeted form of advertising that can work. Having a paid advertising pres- ence on review sites is another example of targeting your marketing spend to a referral source rather than trying to do it yourself.

Google Analytics Regardless of how we choose to market our website, it is a good idea to measure our performance. Google’s free tool, Google Analytics, helps companies Figure 3 understand their return on investment for their marketing and advertising in remarkably sophisticated ways. While many of the tools are free, most of us will need assistance if we do not have techni- cal experience. Google actually provides how-to tutorials for free, so here we will focus on what is available and why it may be important.

Q. How does Google track your website activities? A. The first step is a voluntary one for your company. In order to use the Google Analytics tools, you will have to install a small bit of computer code on each page of your website. This unique tracking code works with a much larger program on Google’s server side to track the ac- tivities of your visitor. Figure 4

IAM: Moving Forward Together July/August 2018 • THE PORTAL 43 Q. What does Google know about your visitors? A. Unless your visitors are logged into their Google account through their Web browser, Google does not know that much about each one. From your IP (Internet Protocol) address, Google gets a general indication of your location. While this is not always accurate, it can usually pinpoint where in the world you are visit- ing from. Google also places a tracking code called a cookie onto your computer hard drive that it uses to identify your computer. This code is associated with the particular computer, so if you visit the same website using your smartphone, Google has no way of knowing it is the same visitor. Google can use this device code in relation to your activities on websites Figure 5 that have a Google tracking code. Thus, it may not know who you are but it can the services it provides to us. Now consider the original Gobstopper from the mad genius Willy Wonka—multi-faceted and multi-dimensional, a wonder in your hand and in your mouth. You look upon the Gobstopper marveling at its odd shape, pondering just where to take a bite. Wondering where, in fact, to start. Consider the various connections to the value chain. There are your customers, of course, and your employees. Then there are your suppliers, partners, shareholders, existing systems and By placing your valuables in our care, processes, to name a few. Understanding where your connec- you will hardly be aware that you have even moved. tions lie helps to identify areas in which your investment delivers value in multiple areas. For example, Daycos developed the agereSM solution to solve carrier billing issues faced by household goods agents. An agent’s billing department staff would spend 15 to 30 minutes generating a single invoice due to the use of multiple systems and interfaces required to glean information, assign a rate and submit an invoice to the customer. These multiple interfaces added complexity when attempting to recruit and train additional staff for peak season. Finally, none of these interfaces would aid in accuracy or enable value for the carrier receiving the invoice. The agereSM solution integrated all compensation schedules into a single portal that allowed the billing department em- ployees a single tool to create, populate, rate and electronically submit invoices to multiple carriers. Users gained 30 percent efficiency in the back office. The portal offered a consistent, user-friendly process that was easy to train, solving the staffing complexity. Most important, receivables improved due to the accuracy of the invoice and the speed of delivery. Hidden value in this process, however, is gained from the carrier customer. Accurate invoices arrived at the carrier of- fices quickly, enabling the carriers to bill their customers more accurately and quickly; carriers further realize time and resource savings by not having to reconcile inaccurate agent invoices. The resulting improvements in communication and efficiency were replicated down the value chain. Unlocking value and transparency in your supply chain may be harder to quantify at the start, but they are easily calculated upon implementation in increased sales, more productive (and less stressed) staff and a faster ROI on any investment made. That last bit, in fact, is the core of Speed to Value.

Speed to Value (S2V) Evaluating investments for the back office is facilitated once you examine multi-dimensional value. Think of all stakeholders as you ask yourself what will add value, then what will add that value as quickly as possible (the S2V). 1. How quickly does the tool improve your receivables? Is your invoice easier to interpret (and therefore process)? Does your back office investment capture all the data your customer needs from you? Are there features that enable your staff to follow up on receivables and manage any dis- crepancies easily? 2. Will your staff use the tool? Like the Milwaukee Tools tile saw that sits in my garage, even the best tools are useless if left unused in the box. Think of the value your employees— not just the company—derive from the tool. Less stress? More production? Better management of the process? How about a better process overall? If the tool doesn’t deliver value to your employees, then they will be slow to adopt (which negatively affects your S2V).

Consider the important key performance indicators (KPIs) and whether the tool can provide those data points for consideration. 6. What do you gain in the future? Best-in-class solutions enable you to glean value year-over-year. Balance future gains against projected maintenance costs to determine the impact on your S2V in future years; if future gains remain steady or improve while maintenance costs remain the same or decrease, you can expect the same S2V year over year. 7. What is the risk? Risk analysis remains an important consideration when evaluating back office solutions. When assessing the risk to your organization, consider as well the risk to your value chain if the improvements are NOT made. Will your competition best you with improved relationships due to better, multi-dimensional value? Will you spend more in future years to catch up with technology than you would by making investments today? Do you risk a slower S2V by waiting?

UROMOVERS International S.A., the global network Eof professional moving companies headquartered in Lux- embourg, is taking steps to eliminate confusion arising from another organization based in Dubai that trades under the name of Euromovers. That company, Euro Fastline Movers, brands itself Euro- movers and claims to have 10 years’ experience in the industry. Thomas Juchum, general manager of EUROMOVERS in Lux- embourg, said that the people behind the Dubai company appear to be those who previously operated Euro Movers International LLC Dubai and also used the Euromovers name. In January 2017 Thomas reported that his organization had received emails from this company’s customers complaining about its service—a problem that continues with the new entity in Dubai. “Just as before,” said Juchum, “some people assume that this organization is a subsidiary of a member of our net- work. It has absolutely nothing to do with us. It is a different organization. Even their company logo is different.” EUROMOVERS International S.A. in Luxembourg serves as the headquarters for an organization of medium-sized, family- owned moving companies in Europe and overseas. “We have our own agents available in the UAE and other countries of the Middle East,” said Juchum. “Euro Fastline Movers, just like its predecessor, never has been, nor will ever be, connected with our international service network.” Juchum said that he is unable to help customers or moving companies resolve disputes with the organization in Dubai. He suggested that those customers contact the Chamber of Com- merce at www.dubaichamber.com.
