THE JEWELRY & METAL ARTS PROGRAM

In these courses, you will create fine metal art objects and jewelry using non-ferrous and precious metals. Begin by learning the basics of fabrication and techniques before moving on to more challenging projects. Take a creative and intelligent approach to innovation through an in-depth explora- tion of metals combined with a variety of materials, including plastic, wood, ceramic, stone, textiles, paper, rubber, cement, resin, and found objects.

Design and create using modern industrial techniques and adapt them for jewelry designs and sculptural forms. In the laser-cutting course, you will learn to create vectors and use a laser cutter to cut precise, intricate designs in a variety of mate- rials, including wood, paper, leather, some plastics, and cardboard. From there, you can enrich your curriculum with 3D modeling and printing to create volumetric forms.

JEWELRY DESIGNER Jewelry designers are usually drawn to their career because of a passion for artistic pursuits and fashion. Designers may work with jewelers and individual customers to create one-of-a-kind jewelry, or they may work for manufacturers developing new pieces for the company’s collec- tions. Some entrepreneurial designers go on to start businesses, selling designer jewelry under their own names.

7 BENCH JEWELER Bench jewelers use torches along with various hand and mechanical tools to join, cut, shape, and polish metal and set stones. A variety of chemical solutions are also used to add color and surface textures. Responsibilities may range from assisting with design problems, fabrication and casting, basic repair, and cleaning. Typical repair work includes enlarging or reducing sizes, resetting stones, and replacing broken clasps and mountings.

ELECTRONICS & THE WEARABLE FORM Students will learn the basics of analog and digital inputs/outputs, electronic components, and basic coding for microprocessors for use in wearable objects, jewelry, and sculpture. This technical information will benefit all sculptors, fine artists, fashion designers, jewelry designers, and anyone interested in incorporating light, motion, and interactivity into their projects.
