Il est composé de Bono (Paul Hewson) au chant et à la guitare, The Edge (David Evans) à la guitare, au piano et au chant, Adam Clayton à la basse et Larry Mullen Junior à la batterie. Depuis les années 1980, U2 s'est imposé comme un groupe majeur sur la scène mondiale. On lui doit notamment les albums War, The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, Zooropa, Pop et All That You Can't Leave Behind. U2 a vendu plus de 170 millions d'albums et a également remporté 22 Grammy Awards. U2 est classé 22e sur la liste des 100 plus grands artistes de tous les temps par le magazine Rolling Stone. Depuis le milieu des années 1980, le groupe défend la cause des droits de l'homme. Bono, le chanteur charismatique et engagé a été en lice pour le Prix Nobel de la paix en 2003 et en 2005. Il fait également la promotion d'Amnesty International lors de ses concerts et le groupe devient « ambassadeur de conscience » de l'organisation en 2004. En 2005, Bono est nommé « Personnalité de l'année 2005 » par le Time Magazine pour son combat en faveur de l'Afrique. En 2008, il se voit décerner le titre d'« Homme de la paix » par le maire de Paris et en 2013, Il est nommé Commandeur de l'ordre des arts et des lettres par la ministre de la culture française, Aurélie Filippetti. CONTEXTE En Irlande du Nord, un conflit entre Catholiques et Protestants dure depuis très longtemps. Pour le comprendre, il faut remonter jusqu’à la fin du 16e siècle où les principales causes apparaissent: la colonisation, la confiscation des terres par Henri VIII et la religion. En 1919, le Sinn Féin / ʃ ɪ n ˈ f eɪ n /, parti sécessionniste, et l’IRA, Armée Républicaine irlandaise, font une vraie guerre d’indépendance contre les Britanniques. Cette lutte aboutit, en 1920, à l’autonomie de l’Irlande (Government of Ireland Act), mais aussi à sa division, avec notamment la création de l'Etat libre d'Irlande en 1922 qui ne comprend pas l'Irlande du Nord. Le conflit nord‐irlandais, appelé aussi « the Troubles », est une période de violence et d'agitation politique en Irlande du Nord (Ulster) dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Il débute à la fin des années 1960 et est considéré comme terminé entre 1997 et 2007 selon les interprétations. À la fin des années 60, en Irlande du Nord, les Catholiques sont soumis à d’importantes discriminations, c’est pourquoi ils organisent des manifestations pour obtenir l’égalité avec les Protestants. Cependant, cela provoque des frictions entre les deux communautés religieuses. L'opposition entre républicains et nationalistes (principalement catholiques) d'une part, loyalistes et unionistes (principalement protestants) d'autre part sur l'avenir de l'Irlande du Nord entraîne une montée de la violence qui dure pendant trente ans. Elle est le fait de groupes paramilitaires républicains, comme l'IRA provisoire dont le but est de mettre fin à l'autorité britannique en Irlande du Nord et de créer une République irlandaise sur l'ensemble de l'île, et loyalistes, comme l'Ulster Volunteer Force formée en 1966 pour stopper ce qu'il perçoit comme la détérioration du caractère britannique du pays, mais aussi d'émeutes populaires et des forces de sécurité de l'État, l'Armée britannique et la police. Le conflit nord‐irlandais est diversement défini par plusieurs de ses acteurs, soit comme une guerre, un conflit ethnique, une guérilla ou une guerre civile. Ce conflit dégénère souvent en combat armé, en émeutes et en attentats à la bombe. Il affecte la vie quotidienne de la plupart des Nord‐Irlandais, ainsi qu'incidemment celle des Anglais et des Irlandais dans le Sud de l'île. En plusieurs occasions entre 1969 et 1998, ce conflit manque de se transformer en une véritable guerre civile. Le 22 mai 1997, il y a eu un référendum pour la paix, mais il n’a jamais été appliqué. Le 10 avril 1998, des accords de paix causent des soubresauts de violence. La reconnaissance par le gouvernement britannique pour la première fois de la « dimension irlandaise », le principe que le peuple de l'île d'Irlande dans son ensemble puisse résoudre les problèmes entre le Nord et le Sud par consentement mutuel, sans intervention extérieure, permet d'obtenir l'accord des nationalistes et des républicains. Elle établit aussi en Irlande du Nord un gouvernement consociatif, composé obligatoirement d'unionistes et de nationalistes. Maintenant, nous savons que même s’il y a presque autant de catholiques que de protestants en Irlande du Nord, (43% de catholiques et 54% de protestants), il y a des inégalités dans cette société. Aujourd’hui, la paix est en voie d’être maintenue. L’IRA a déposé les armes en échange d’un pouvoir politique et du retrait d’une partie des troupes anglaises. Analyse de l'œuvre Lecture descriptive et interprétative : Le Bloody Sunday (dimanche sanglant) survient lors d’une des marches organisées depuis le milieu des années 60 par l’Association des Droits Civiques d’Irlande du Nord pour promouvoir l'égalité de droits entre catholiques et protestants. A Derry, en Irlande du Nord, le 30 janvier 1972 a lieu une tuerie sanglante lors de la marche organisée par l'Association nord-irlandaise pour les droits civiques. Les responsables, des soldats du 1° Régiment de parachutistes anglais, ont quelquefois tiré dans le dos des manifestants, dont certains n'avaient que dix-sept ans. 13 personnes sont mortes (une quatorzième victime mourra quelques mois plus tard) et de nombreuses personnes furent blessées. La chanson a été écrite 10 ans après les évènements. Le morceau commence par une intro de batteries qui rappelle les roulements de tambours militaires joués pendant les défilés. Dans le 1er couplet, Bono semble desabusé par ce qu'il voit aux informations, il ne peut rester insensible et impuissant ("I can't believe the news today, I can't close my eyes and make it go away"). Combien de temps aura t'il encore besoin de chanter cette chanson ? ("how long must we sing this song"). Il utilise ici l'anaphore*: How long? , il insiste ici sur la durée. Cette question est répétée 10 fois. Dès ce soir les Irlandais se réuniront pour ne former plus qu'un ("cause tonight we can be as one"): la paix est possible. *L'anaphore est une figure de style qui consiste à commencer des vers, phrases ou ensembles de phrases ou de vers, par le même mot ou le même syntagme. Elle rythme la phrase, souligne un mot, une obsession, provoque un effet musical, communique plus d'énergie au discours ou renforce une affirmation, un plaidoyer, suggère une incantation, une urgence. Syntaxiquement, elle permet de créer un effet de symétrie. Dans le 2ème couplet le ton se durcit. Bono y décrit un champs de bataille ("broken bottle under children feet"), des corps gisant sur le sol ("bodies strewn accross the dead end street") et il crie sa colère ("It puts my back up against the wall"). Allitération* en B : en anglais un coup de feu fait "bang" donc cette allitération représente le bruit des tirs. *Allitération: Répétition des consonnes initiales ou intérieures dans une suite de mots pour obtenir un effet d'harmonie, de pittoresque ou de surprise Dans le 3ème couplet, Bono dénonce la guerre, une guerre où il n'y a pas de gagnant. Il utilise le champ lexical de la guerre: "battle", "trenches". Juste après le solo arrive une parenthèse. Bono demande d'arrêter de pleurer ("wipe your tears away"), preuve que la guerre n'est pas une fatalité et qu'il faut garder espoir envers l'avenir. Dans le 4ème couplet, Bono fustige les médias. Ceux qui nous montrent la violence au quotidien et qui du fait rendent difficile le discernement entre la fiction et la réalité et qui, en quelque sorte, banalisent la violence au point qu'elle ne choque plus ("and it's true we are immune when fact is fiction and tv reality"). Pourtant les gens pleurent et de nombreux gens risquent encore de mourir parfois dans une totale indifférence ("and today the millions cry, we eat and drink while tomorrow they die"). Mais la bataille réelle ne fait que commencer. Non pas celle qui va voir la victoire des catholiques et des protestants mais celle qui verra la victoire de Jésus (les Irlandais sont en majorité très croyants). Dans le refrain, Bono utilise la question en How? pour dire qu'ils sont fatigués de cette guerre qui a déjà duré trop longtemps et personne ne semble écouter ceux qui veulent que cette guerre cesse. Sunday, Bloody , Sunday : l'adjectif bloody a plusieurs sens: taché de sang/ ensanglanté; cruel / sans pitié; et en anglais britannique c'est un juron utilisé dans une émotion telle que l'énervement. Dans la chanson , Bono y donne les 3 sens. Cette chanson est écrite plus de dix ans aprés l'évènement à une époque où il y a toujours des conflits.

Mathews © UCDscholarcast UCDscholarcast 1 Bill Whelan, Globalising Irish Music Bill Whelan Globalising Irish Music One of the duties an author, performer or composer undertakes when travelling around the world in advance or in the wake of a production is to face the media. Such has been my experience with Riverdance. Sitting in stuffed rooms in Sydney or Seattle or stretched on soft settees in say, Stockholm, I have been asked an amazing array of questions. Over the thirteen years of the life of this show I have been rendered mute by questions such as (in London): ‘how many pairs of tights does Riverdance go through in an evening?’. That one gave me some pause for thought, but not as much as the question I was asked in Tokyo when we first went there. Through an interpreter a Japanese journalist probingly inquired if I felt that the album Ó Ríada sa Gaiety was an important influence in changing the course of Irish traditional music. These kinds of questions have demonstrated to me over the years the variety of responses that people have to what was actually the same musical or theatrical experience. To progress a bit further on the theme of artistic intent versus audience response—in France I recall a press conference where a few journalists were pushing me to interpret Riverdance as an Irish Nationalistic cultural response to years of British domination.

    Treoir Comhaltas Magazine (Spring 1997) Out of the West By Raymond Hughes My father purchased an old Hohner accordion from a neighbour in Ballygriffey and decided that Frank Custy in Toonagh had a fitting alternative to my lack of talent on the hurling field. So begins the magnificent tale of one man’s musical journey continuing four generations of Clare concertina players. With several All-Ireland championships to his credit, Gearóid O hAllmhurain has finally released a solo album, entitled Traditional Music from Clare and Beyond. Acclaimed as one of the finest concertina recordings of all time by some critics, it is so much more than simply concertina. Joined by three of County Clares legendary fiddlers, Paddy Canny, Peter O’Loughlin and Martin Hayes, as well as Belfast harper Janet Harbison, sean-nós dancer Patrick O’Dea from Seafield, Inis Oírr flute player Mícheál O hAlmhain, and several other special guests, there is the makings of an entire céilií band on this recording. This delightful recording was released in Ireland and North America this summer. In the 1980s, Gearóid made his first forays into Amerikay as manager and piper of Dísirt Tola. This extraordinary band of young talent created their own cooperative recording produced in Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin. Touring England and New England, the band consisted of Sharon, Mary, and Garry Shannon, and a rake of young Clare and Dublin musicians. To this day, that album remains a most sought after collection but is as rare as hen’s teeth. Then for many years, Gearóid disappeared from the professional music arena in exchange for his academic pursuits.
