Seiler calls “contemporary conscious popular music”, which includes “music of any genre that focuses on social issues and perceived problems in society and may or may not include music that carries an overtly political message”. Consequently, much of the analysis of their songs claim that these are only a mere description of the terrible situation countries such as Ireland and the US were facing at that time. In this paper, however, I will examine the sociopolitical significance of U2’s songs as an appreciator of their cultural contribution and show that the events which formed the backdrop to some of U2’s most explicitly political songs in the 1980s – especially those included in War and The Joshua Tree – are etched indelibly into the text of both Ireland’s and America’s troubled colonial and political history. -

BEFORE THE CALIFORNIA FISH AND GAME COMMISSION A Petition to List the Western Joshua Tree (Yucca brevifolia) as Threatened under the California Endangered Species Act (CESA) Center for Biological Diversity October 15, 2019 i Notice of Petition For action pursuant to Section 670.1, Title 14, California Code of Regulations (CCR) and Division 3, Chapter 1.5, Article 2 of the California Fish and Game Code (Sections 2070 et seq.) relating to listing and delisting endangered and threatened species of plants and animals. I. SPECIES BEING PETITIONED: Species Name: Western Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia) as either a full species, or as the subspecies Yucca brevifolia brevifolia. II. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Listing as Threatened The Center for Biological Diversity submits this petition to list the western Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia) as Threatened pursuant to the California Endangered Species Act (California Fish and Game Code §§ 2050 et seq., “CESA”). The western Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia), long recognized as a subspecies or variety (Yucca brevifolia brevifolia), has recently been recognized as a full species distinct from its close relative, the eastern Joshua tree (Yucca jaegeriana). This petition demonstrates that the western Joshua tree is eligible for and warrants listing under CESA based on the factors specified in the statute and implementing regulations. Specifically, the western Joshua tree meets the definition of a “threatened species” since it is “a native species or subspecies of a … plant that, although not presently threatened with extinction, is likely to become an endangered species in the foreseeable future in the absence of the special protection and management efforts . .” Cal. -

The future distribution of the Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia) is projected by combining a geostatistical analysis of 20th-century climates over its current range, future modeled climates, and paleoecological data showing its response to a past similar climate change. As climate rapidly warmed ;11 700 years ago, the range of Joshua tree contracted, leaving only the populations near what had been its northernmost limit. Its ability to spread northward into new suitable habitats after this time may have been inhibited by the somewhat earlier extinction of megafaunal dispersers, especially the Shasta ground sloth. We applied a model of climate suitability for Joshua tree, developed from its 20th-century range and climates, to future climates modeled through a set of six individual general circulation models (GCM) and one suite of 22 models for the late 21st century. -

Many factors contributed to this, including: The committee structure that allows strategy and policies to be discussed at length and recommendations to be made to the Board; Cost containment. Victor and his management team have continued to drive down the cost of running IMRO efficiently; Market penetration. Research has been carried out to determine the size of the market in every area of the company's business; strategies have been agreed to achieve this over time; Prudent investment in IT, and Continued protection of our members' right to be remunerated when their work adds value to business. As well as this work that aims to maximise members‘ royalties, there is continuous work being done to ensure a sustainable future, including: Alliances with other industry stakeholders MCPSI, PPI and RAAP via IMIR, the Irish Music Intellectual Rights group; Continuous engagement with Government; The work of IASCA, the Irish Association of Songwriters, Composers and Authors; Membership of the Creative Ireland Alliance: Development of a strategy to promote the value of copyright at all levels in the education sector, and Active membership of international organisations including CISAC, GESAC, BIEM and CIAM. -

It’s most often an honest question from both colleagues and non-teachers alike, though sometimes the latter’s fascination with “summers off” borders on an obsession. Still, in whatever form, the question still comes: “What do you have planned for the summer?” Even though I answer this question more assuredly as a college teacher than I did as a high school teacher, this year I find myself fishing for an answer that will satisfy.
