History, Historical Fiction, and Historical Myth: 'The German Doctor' by Lucía Puenzo Abstract The se cape of thousands of war criminals to Argentina and throughout South America in the aftermath of World War II is a historical subject that has been clouded with mystery and conspiracy. Lucía Puenzo's film, The German Doctor, utilizes this historical enigma as a backdrop for historical fiction by imagining a family's encounter with Josef Mengele, the notorious SS doctor from Auschwitz who escaped to South America in 1949 under a false identity. -

LINDERT By K Lesli Ligorner Fetching the newspaper from your porch, you look up and wave at your elderly neighbor across the street. This quiet man emigrated to the United States from Europe in the 1950s. Upon scanning the newspaper, you discover his picture on the front page and a story revealing that he guarded a notorious Nazi concen- tration camp. How would you react if you knew that this neighbor became a natu- ralized citizen in 1962 and that naturalization requires "good moral character"? The systematic persecution and destruction of innocent peoples from 1933 until 1945 remains a dark chapter in the annals of twentieth century history. Though the War Crimes Trials at Nilnberg' occurred over fifty years ago, the search for those who participated in Nazi-sponsored persecution has not ended. -

Penguin UK and Deborah Lipstadt: Building a Defense Strategy, an Essay by Deborah Lipstadt In September 1996, I received a letter from the British publisher of my book, Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory,' informing me that David Irving had filed a Statement of Case with the Royal High Court in London indicating his intention to sue me for libel for calling him a Holocaust denier in my book. 2 When I first learned of his plans to do this, I was surprised. Irving had called the Holocaust a "legend." In 1988, the Canadian government had charged a German emigre, Ernst Ztndel, with promoting Holocaust denial. Irving, who had testified on behalf of the defense at this trial, told the court that there was no "overall Reich policy to kill the Jews," that "no documents whatsoever show that a Holocaust had * Dr. Deborah E. Michal Schvarc Der ‚Judenkönig‘ der Edlgasse Gustav Hauskrecht und die Verfolgung der Juden in Bratislava 1944/19451 Abstract The Holocaust in Slovakia was not only a result of the antisemitic policy of Hlinka’s Slovak People’s Party regime headed by the Catholic priest Joseph Tiso, but also an initiative by the lower parts of society – the local aggressors. After the occupation of the country by Nazi Germany in the late summer of 1944, this situation partly changed, with the ‚solution of the Jewish question‘ becoming one of the top priorities of the occupying power. However, with- out the help of local helpers, this would hardly have been successful. One such case was Gus- tav Hauskrecht, the head of the so-called ‚Judensammelstelle‘ in Bratislava. This convinced National Socialist and uncompromising antisemite contributed significantly to the persecu- tion of Jews in the Slovak capital at the end of the war and bears a joint responsibility for their deportation to the Nazi concentration camps. This article is an attempt to biographically profile one of the main perpetrators responsible for Shoah in Slovakia. Im Juni 1961 traf sich Simon Wiesenthal in Wien mit Samson Fischer. Holocaust Education Teacher Resources Compiled by Sasha Wittes, Holocaust Education Facilitator For Ilana Krygier Lapides, Director, Holocaust & Human Rights Education Calgary Jewish Federation Why Teach The Holocaust? The Holocaust illustrates how silence and indifference to the suffering of others, can unintentionally, serve to perpetuate the problem. It is an unparalleled event in history that brings to the forefront the horrors of racism, prejudice, and anti-Semitism, as well as the capacity for human evil. The Canadian education system should aim to be: democratic, non-repressive, humanistic and non-discriminating. It should promote tolerance and offer bridges for understanding of the other for reducing alienation and for accommodating differences. Democratic education is the backbone of a democratic society, one that fosters the underpinning values of respect, morality, and citizenship. Through understanding of the events, education surrounding the Holocaust has the ability to broaden students understanding of stereotyping and scapegoating, ensuring they become aware of some of the political, social, and economic antecedents of racism and provide a potent illustration of both the bystander effect, and the dangers posed by an unthinking conformity to social norms and group peer pressure. The study of the Holocaust coupled with Canada’s struggle with its own problems and challenges related to anti-Semitism, racism, and xenophobia will shed light on the issues facing our society. What was The Holocaust? History’s most extreme example of anti- Semitism, the Holocaust, was the systematic state sponsored, bureaucratic, persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933-1945. The term “Holocaust” is originally of Greek origin, meaning ‘sacrifice by fire’ (www.ushmm.org). -
