On the other hand, the Foreign Ministry did nothing affecting the Jews, without a prior understanding with the Jew ish department of the Gestapo. And when any German Jew applied for permission to leave the country, the Foreign Ministry contacted Eich mann-whose opinion decided the matter. Thanks to this correspond ence we have information regarding the various phases of the "End losung", how it was planned and implemented in the occupied ter ritories. It is known that in the begin ning, before he entered the role which ultimately led to his present trial, Eichmann headed the Gov ernment office, the purpose of which was "to help" Jews to emigrate from all parts of the Reich. In connection with this activity in "helping in every possible way" Jews to emigrate from the Third Reich, it is worthwhile recalling a document drafted by the Foreign Ministry, (dated 25 January 1939 and entitled: "Die Judenfrage als Faktor der Aussenpolitik im Jahre 1938"), in which it is stated: "The ultimate aim of the German Jewish policy is the emigration of all Jews living in the Reich". This must be done mainly because by expelling the Jews from Germany anti-Semi tism is intensified in the countries of reception. The report establishes this "factually and convincingly". The author, seeking ways and means of intensifying anti-Semitic tenden cies throughout the world, comes to the conclusion that the poorer the On 2 December 1942 the German as follows to this request: The Reichs immigrant Jew and the greater the Foreign Ministry addressed an enquiry fUhrer SS (i.e.

LINDERT By K Lesli Ligorner Fetching the newspaper from your porch, you look up and wave at your elderly neighbor across the street. This quiet man emigrated to the United States from Europe in the 1950s. Upon scanning the newspaper, you discover his picture on the front page and a story revealing that he guarded a notorious Nazi concen- tration camp. How would you react if you knew that this neighbor became a natu- ralized citizen in 1962 and that naturalization requires "good moral character"? The systematic persecution and destruction of innocent peoples from 1933 until 1945 remains a dark chapter in the annals of twentieth century history. Though the War Crimes Trials at Nilnberg' occurred over fifty years ago, the search for those who participated in Nazi-sponsored persecution has not ended.

Eichmann is already under arrest in Israel and will shortly be placed on trial in Israel under the terms of the law for the trial of Nazis and their collaborators. In the cabinet meeting immediately preceding this announcement, Ben-Gurion’s ministers had expressed their astonishment and curiosity.

Penguin UK and Deborah Lipstadt: Building a Defense Strategy, an Essay by Deborah Lipstadt In September 1996, I received a letter from the British publisher of my book, Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory,' informing me that David Irving had filed a Statement of Case with the Royal High Court in London indicating his intention to sue me for libel for calling him a Holocaust denier in my book. 2 When I first learned of his plans to do this, I was surprised. Irving had called the Holocaust a "legend." In 1988, the Canadian government had charged a German emigre, Ernst Ztndel, with promoting Holocaust denial. Irving, who had testified on behalf of the defense at this trial, told the court that there was no "overall Reich policy to kill the Jews," that "no documents whatsoever show that a Holocaust had * Dr. Deborah E. • Introduction Norman J.W
Introduction Norman J.W. Goda E The examination of legal proceedings related to Nazi Germany’s war and the Holocaust has expanded signifi cantly in the past two decades. It was not always so. Though the Trial of the Major War Criminals at Nuremberg in 1945–1946 generated signifi cant scholarly literature, most of it, at least in the trial’s immediate aftermath, concerned legal scholars’ judgments of the trial’s effi cacy from a strictly legalistic perspective. Was the four-power trial based on ex post facto law and thus problematic for that reason, or did it provide the best possible due process to the defendants under the circumstances?1 Cold War political wrangl ing over the subsequent Allied trials in the western German occupation zones as well as the sentences that they pronounced generated a discourse that was far more critical of the tri- als than laudatory.2 Historians, meanwhile, used the records assembled at Nuremberg as an entrée into other captured German records as they wrote initial studies of the Third Reich, these focusing mainly on foreign policy and wartime strategy, though also to some degree on the Final Solution to the Jewish Question.3 But they did not historicize the trial, nor any of subsequent trials, as such. Studies that analyzed the postwar proceedings in and of themselves from a historical perspective developed only three de- cades after Nuremberg, and they focused mainly on the origins of the initial, groundbreaking trial.4 Matters changed in the 1990s for a number of reasons. The fi rst was late- and post-Cold War interest among historians of Germany, and of other nations too, in Vergangenheitsbewältigung—the political, social, and intellectual attempt to confront, or to sidestep, the criminal wartime past.

To this I cannot say yes or no. I was born in Germany in a little town called Halberstadt, which is in the Harz Mountains in Sachsen-Anhalt, but at the early age of two months my family decided to leave Halberstadt. My father was active in heavy industry in Germany. He was an assistant in one of the many big copper and metal factories in Halberstadt, but two months after I was born we moved to Berlin, so I only knew Berlin while I was in Germany. My father was also one of the leading Zionists of Germany, so I was educated at a German school ironically named after Theodore Herzl— one of the founders and leaders of the Zionist movement: Theodore Herzl School on Adolf Hitler Square.

  • Holocaust Denial
Holocaust Denial Information compiled by Stephen Rosenberg, obtained from Wikipedia. David Irving born in 24/3/1938 is an English author and Holocaust denier who has written on the military and political history of World War II with a focus on Nazi Germany. His works include the destruction of Dresden, Hitler's war, Churchill's war and Goebbels: mastermind of the Third Reich. In his works, he argued that Adolf Hitler did not know of the extermination of Jews, or, if he did, he opposed it. Irving marginalised himself from the mainstream of the study of history in the 1970's when he began the claim that Hitler had neither ordered the extermination of the Jews nor known about the Holocaust. He went even further in 1988 when based on his reading of the pseudoscientific Leuchter Report, he began to expose Holocaust denial, specifically denying that Jews were murdered by gassing at the Auschwitz concentration camp. Irving's reputation as a "historian" was discredited in 1996 when, in the course of an unsuccessful libel case he filed against the American historian Deborah Lipstadt and Penguin Books. He was shown to have deliberately misrepresented historical evidence to promote Holocaust denial. The English court found that Irving was an active Holocaust denier, anti-Semite and racist, who, "for his own ideological reasons persistently and deliberately misrepresented and manipulated historical evidence". In addition, the court found that Irving's books had distorted the history of Hitler’s role in the Holocaust to depict Hitler in a favourable light. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fred a Leuchter, an American manufacturer of execution equipment and Holocaust denier who is best known as the author of the report, a pseudoscientific document that alleges there were no gas chambers at Auschwitz Birkenau.
