BIBLIOGRAPHIC ESSAY Reference Resources in Irish Literature BY JAMES BRACKEN James Bracken is acting assistant director for Main Library Research and Reference Services at Ohio State University. The recent publication of Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney's Beowulf: A New Verse Translation suggests some of the difficulties in attempting to distinguish an Irish identity in English literature. This Beowulf can be interpreted as a clever trick of literary appropriation: if, as it has been said, the great works of Irish literature have been written in English, in Heaney's Beowulf one of England's literary treasures is made Irish. Just what constitutes Irish literature often seems to be as much a matter of semantics as national identity. In the Oxford Companion to Irish Literature, editor Robert Welch argues that Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing, edited by Seamus Deane, the standard by which all subsequent anthologies of Irish literature must be measured, confronts "the discontinuities in Irish literary culture." Some collections have taken Deane's example to the extreme: for instance, The Ireland Anthology, edited by Sean Dunne, includes on its "literary map of Ireland" Edmund Spenser, William Thackeray, Katherine Mansfield, and John Betjeman, Chevalier de la Tocnaye, Alexis de Tocqueville, Friedrich En- gels, and Pope John Paul II. In The Oxford Book of Ireland editor Patricia Craig takes "the opposite extreme ... of the formidable Field Day Anthology"; she observes that her volume could "do no more than skim the surface of Ireland." Neither approach has adequately delineated a single Irish identity. -

In altre parole, sembra necessario precisare quale contributo si presuma di offrire alla comprensione del percorso poetico di Heaney, anche in rapporto alle monografie e ai saggi esistenti. È il poeta stesso a indicare la chiave di lettura che meglio consente di cogliere il senso profondo della sua ricerca estetica ed etica. Nel componimento “Out of the Bag” il narratore richiama l'attenzione su “the cure / By poetry that cannot be coerced”1. Riassumendo in questo verso le qualità fondamentali dell'arte poetica, Heaney mette in luce i tratti distintivi della sua produzione, sempre alla ricerca, fin dalle prime prestazioni, di una mediazione fra le pressioni socio-politiche del mondo esterno e la volontà di mantenere intatto il potere terapeutico del medium poetico. Lo scopo di questa ricerca è quello di affrontare la lettura, o rilettura, delle poesie di Heaney, come egli stesso suggerisce in “Squarings XXXVII”: “Talking about it isn't good enough / But quoting from it at least demonstrates / The virtue of an art that knows its mind”2. -

Locating John Toland Introduction . Locating John Toland OLAND was desperately ill. He had recurring ‘pains in my thighs, reins and T stomach’ accompanied by ‘a total loss of appetite, hourly retchings, and very high colour’d water’. His hopes that this suffering was the symptom of ‘gravel’ that would pass with the stones were dashed. Confined to his chamber for weeks, he could keep down nothing but weak broth, and was scarcely able to walk. Reduced to relying on the kindnesses of others by disastrous invest- ments in the fashionable speculations of South Sea Company, Toland was on his uppers. Only a few years previously his pen had been at the command of government ministers and European princes: he had written for German queens, Savoyard princes, Irish peers and English earls.1 Despite his international celebrity, John Toland eventually died a slow, painful death in lowly circumstances, passing away in a rented back room of a carpenter’s cottage in March 1722. This was less than gentle scholarly poverty. Given the radical character of his reputation, perhaps it was no coincidence that the churchyard was that of St Mary’s Putney, which had entertained the political debates of the Levellers in the 1640s. Having suffered for months from a combination of the stone, severe rheumatism and ‘black-jaundice’, the final ‘violent indisposition’ that carried him away was a fever which ‘proved mortal to him about three of the clock on Sunday morning, the 11th instant, in the 53rd Year of his Age’.2 Typically for a man steeped in the writings of classical antiquity, Toland, called in one obituary ‘the Lucian of our times’, approached death with a ‘philosophical patience’, although papers left scattered in his room indicated he blamed the incompetence and greed of physicians for much of his misery.3 He was bedridden for over a month but his friends and patrons did what they could to make him comfortable. -

The Wisdom of the Ages Athenaeum at The Columbia Club A u g u s t t o D e c e m b e r 2020 Page 1 1 2 August to December 2020 Exhibition Dante Alighieri This work is Dante Alighieri’s poem entitled “The Vision; or, Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise The Vision; or, of Dante Alighieri,” or more commonly known as “The Divine Comedy.” It was translated Hell, Purgatory, by Reverend H. F. Cary. There is no date given for this book on the copyright page, but and Paradise of the date at the end of the preface is January 1814. Alighieri began working on the poem Dante Alighieri around 1308 and completed it in 1320. He wrote “The Divine Comedy” as an allegory rep- 1814 resenting the soul’s journey towards God and absolution. Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso are the three sections of the poem and make up the three destinations that Dante experi- enced. Using symbolism and drawing upon theology and mythology, Alighieri creates a larg- er-than-life story describing his experience of finding God. The popularity of this piece of literature hasn’t dimin- ished throughout the years and is still considered to be the preeminent work in Italian literature and one the great- est works of world literature. #0905 Susan B. New Wine in Old Skins: Vernacular Typology in Medieval English Literature, 590-1390 Audrey Walton Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Audrey Walton All rights reserved 2 ABSTRACT New Wine in Old Skins: Vernacular Typology in Medieval English Literature, 590-1390 Audrey Walton My dissertation examines the significance of sacred poetry in English to the political and social identity of the English church, from England’s conversion at the end of the sixth century to the flourishing of England’s vernacular theology in the fourteenth. I show that the vernacular literary culture of Anglo-Saxon England was fostered in part by the distinction between the spirit and the letter of the Bible, which enabled speakers of Old English to regard their own literary cultures as potentially sacred and inspired. Turning to the later part of the medieval period, I examine the “spiritual sense,” or level of figural meaning, of sacred texts in Middle English. I demonstrate that the spiritual sense of Middle English religious poems is often designed to communicate an idealized history of English Christianity, as Middle English poems often use inventive typologies to represent the miracle of Anglo-Saxon England’s conversion as a source of sacred authority for the English language. This idealized religious history typically imagines the Church, not as a homogeneous community of Latin speakers, but as a diverse community characterized by heterogeneity and multilingualism. My focus on the distinction between the spirit and the letter, and its significance to medieval multilingualism, enables me to showcase an aspect of the cultural identity of medieval Catholicism that has often gone overlooked. -

Edmund Burke and the Role of the Critic in Mid- Eighteenth-Century Britain (Under the direction of Dr. Jay M. Smith) This study centers upon Edmund Burke’s early literary career, and his move from Dublin to London in 1750, to explore the interplay of academic, professional, and commercial networks that comprised the mid-eighteenth-century Republic of Letters in Britain and Ireland. Burke’s experiences before his entry into politics, particularly his relationship with the bookseller Robert Dodsley, may be used both to illustrate the political and intellectual debates that infused those networks, and to deepen our understanding of the publisher-author relationship at that time. It is argued here that it was Burke’s involvement with Irish Patriot debates in his Dublin days, rather than any assumed Catholic or colonial resentment, that shaped his early publications, not least since Dodsley himself was engaged in a revision of Patriot literary discourse at his “Tully’s Head” business in the light of the legacy of his own patron Alexander Pope. -

He was arguably the most successful Irish king of the Middle Ages, and his sobriquet “bórumha” (“cattle tribute”), usually Anglicized as “Boru,” refers to his right to the reign over the island. Special emphasis is placed on the development of his military strategy as he progressed from regional prince to lordship over the entire island. Brian’s career has not received the scholarly attention given to his contemporaries elsewhere. His reign is either dealt with superficially in brief essays or treated more fully by writers interested in sensationalism. A careful study of Brian’s strategy and operational method reveals that they continuously evolved during the course of his reign. -

Groome Abstract What does it mean to “be church”? How can we foster a sense of collective faith identity through religious education? What resources can we draw upon in this endeavor? I propose that the authentic early Irish Church offers insights that add to the field of religious education by suggesting that religious educators focus on forming persons in faith to be Christians both within a community of believers and in the world. Doing so not only enriches the individual, but also invigorates the Church and allows it to reclaim its voice in the twenty-first century public square. This thesis suggests an approach to religious education rooted in the example of the early Irish tradition yet pertinent to the contemporary desire for faith, spirituality and community. -

John Toland’s Pivotal Version of Secularism at the Turn of the Eighteenth Century by Edward Jayne John Toland (1669-1722) bore a remarkable career throughout his life-long confrontation with religion. He was raised a Catholic in Ireland, but converted to Protestantism during his education at Glasgow and Edinburgh Universities in Scotland. He later became what was described as a latitudinarian (or Low Churchman) at Leyden University in the Netherlands, and while completing his education at Oxford University he could be more accurately described as “a man of fine parts, great learning, and little religion.” Most of the rest of his life was spent in London with a brief stay in Ireland, several interludes across Europe, and his final four years in the town of Putney, located outside London.
