Sin Rumba, no hay Son! - Without Rumba there is no Son! The opening tune, Embale tiene la llave, cuts to the chase with lead singer Eugenio Rodríguez Rodríguez, who is known as “Raspa” for the agreeably rough timbre of his voice, trading close-harmony licks with his cohorts. Number six, La Rumba no es como ayer, a percussive beauty, finds all hips in motion. The ninth tune, La Mulata rumbera, spotlights guest artist Bertha Portuondo’s plangent tone, high spirits and exquisite phrasing; she often toys with the beat, playfully lagging a touch behind while kicking up her heels in joyous abandon. On the eleventh track, Me dieron la clave, another great rumbero, Emilio Moret wields his lustrous tenor with a youth’s directness and a master’s subtlety. Each of the 14 selections unfurls like rum-tinged cigar smoke, swooning, exuberant, sexy and plaintive; as intricate as chamber-music, as liltingly sensual as a slow-dance, as sweetly guileless as a lullaby, as primal as the throbbing heart of a conga drum.

SABOR DE GRÀCIA Sabor Pa’ Rato World Village 498037 8427592001338 CD World//Catalan The Catalan rumba is a popular musical current of Gypsy roots which arose in Barcelona in the mid-fifties. It emerged as the confluence of two western music traditions: flamenco and Afro- Cuban. It was combined by Catalan Gypsies into a new style of urban folklore through the assimilation of Afro-Latin patterns into their flamenco musical tradition. Sabor de Gràcia comes up as the Catalan rumba band most abreast of its time thanks to this magic formula. After mov- ing closer to Latin American traits in later years, it wishes now to go back home to the roots of this crossbred, provocative and hedonist style that used to set everybody dancing wherever it was played. The town of Gràcia is now a genuine Gypsy quarter. This is indeed where the true nature of the Catalan rumba represented by Sabor de Gràcia (Taste of Gracia) is to be found. They are a young though experienced band who know how to connect with a faithful public eager to enjoy the rumba. Sabor pa’rato is their fourth album, a vibrant recording that marks the first collaboration with World Village.

JOÃO BOSCO & NDR BIG BAND Senhoras Do Amazonas Yellowbird YEB77162 767522771626 CD digipack World/Brazil First discovered by Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, the brilliant composer/vocalist/guitarist Joao Bosco is one of the main figures of MPB (Música Popular Brasileira). His 2006 release Obrigada Gente! Ao Vivo (Universal Brazil) has sold over 100,000 copies in his homeland. In Europe he is one of the “secret pearls” of Brazilian singer-songwriter music still to be discovered by a larger audience. Admired as a versatile vocalist and a dynamic performer, Bosco has been noted for his singular fusion of Arab culture, Afro-American music and Brazilian styles bossa nova influenced by American jazz. This studio album with Germany’s NDR Big Band stemmed from a joint Brazilian tour in 2007.

OQUESTRADA Tasca Beat, O Sonho Portugues JARO Medien JARO4295-2 4006180429521 CD digipack World/Portugal Marta Miranda - voice; Jean Marc Pablo - double bass; João Lima - portuguese guitar, percussion, keyboards; Zeto Feijão - guitar, voice, violin; Donatello Brida/Marina Henriques - accordion, key- boards; Sandro Manuel - trombone OqueStrada spent seven years on the road honing their chops before recording this debut album (which spent four months in the Portuguese Top 30). The wait was well worth it. ‘Tasca-Beat, The Portuguese Dream’ is a sound that celebrates a vibrating Portugal in an intimate place where party and melancholy meet each other. A sound that winks to fado and listens to a forgotten countryside, that sings with proletarian glamour the streets of Lisbon and the suburban neigh- bourhoods. The music of a harbor where several languages fulfilled with the dream of departing to later return are heard, where we toast to a reinvented Portuguese heart.

DIOGAL Urban Spirit Playasound PS66417 3700089664175 CD World/Senegal For his fourth album Diogal Sakho has again produced a folk-pop gem infused with the salty tang of his coastal home of Lebou in Senegal, but with an urban sensibility imbued by his ten years as a resident of Paris. Diogal has written, arranged, recorded and produced the album in his own studio and sees it as a summit in his career. His warm crooning voice reflects the sheer musicality of the Wolof language, with easy-paced guitar and percussion backing. Above all, he has refined his style around the simple idea of combining the acoustic guitars of his folk heritage with composite, Afro-European rhythms, while working on his very pure vocal style. Now he finds himself compared to his former idols, Ismaël Lô and Cheikh Lô and was recently voted ‘Best art- ist of the Senegalese diaspora’ at the Sunu Music Awards in Dakar.

Recorded at the Marciac Jazz Festival, France, in August 2009

ENJA RECORDS presents the new album by Cuban pianist/composer Roberto Fonseca. Live in Marciac was recorded at that town’s festival in South West France. Within just 20 years this small town has developed the most impressive jazz festival in France. For this unique event, every summer, a tent holding 5,000 people is constructed and the village comes impressively to life. The pianist and his group have been perennial favorites in Marciac and have been invited back for an unprecedented fourth time in August of 2010. Says Fonseca, “Each concert I play in Marciac, I prepare with special enthusiasm and respect. The festival and its audience deserve the very best than I can offer. I will always be grateful to belong to the great Marciac family.”

The ensemble plays with incredible power and unprecedented joie de vivre clearly inspired by the enthusiastic audience in the sold out tent. It’s the kind of music that you cannot produce under studio conditions. Live in Marciac is Fonseca’s third album for ENJA. It follows Akokan from 2008 and Zamazu from 2007. With the two previous releases and worldwide tours through Europe, the USA / Canada, Japan and Australia Roberto Fonseca reached the international stages and is now recognized as one of the most charismatic musicians of recent years.

Born in 1975 into a musical family, Roberto Fonseca was a revelation at Havana’s “Jazz Plaza” International Festival when he was fifteen. After taking a degree in musical composition he recorded his first album which was awarded “Best Jazz Album” at the Cubadisco Festival in 1999. Roberto’s life changed when he became Rubén González’ successor in the Orquesta de Ibrahim Ferrer. After more than 400 concerts with Ferrer he also arranged and co-produced the singer’s last album, “Mi Sueno” which was nominated for a Grammy in 2007. Regarded as “the most promising and important talent in Cuban music”, Roberto has also performed with such musicians as Omara Portuondo, Bebo and Chucho Valdéz, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker and Wayne Shorter.

This new album also includes a DVD of the full, unedited concert, produced by the specialist studio Futur-Acoustic, Paris, using six cameras in HD quality.

Robert Mitchell - piano, keyboards; Deborah Jordan – vocals; Tom Mason – bass; Shaney Forbes - drums; Hammadi Valdez – percussion; Julian Ferraretto – vio- lin; Ben Davis – cello; HKB Finn - spoken word

Robert Mitchell is interviewed in Jazzwise and Jazz UK

The Cusp is the third album from Robert Mitchell’s Panacea and the group’s first on EDITION RECORDS, after previous releases on 33, F-ire and Dune.

The title track with fine Fender Rhodes and lyrics from Mitchell and spoken word from HKB Finn cries out for social and ecological transformation while finding solace in the emotional renewal that comes from parenthood. Aura’s angular strings and piano auger a lyric that calls for the transcending of all those things that divide us, not just racially, ethnically or sexually but interpersonally as well, while Mio Inamorato with just voice and piano is about the determination to rescue a relationship gone stale. These songs are an antidote to rock bombast, the misogyny and misandry of R&B and the tired reliance on the Great American Songbook. Hardly surprising then that Mitchell finds inspiration for his adult themes and concerns in the lyrics of such diverse and distinctive writers as Prince, Paddy McAloon of Prefab Sprout and singer Norma Winstone.

The Cusp is simultaneously modern jazz and contemporary soul music. In Mitchell’s piano one hears echoes of the harmonies of Bill Evans and the warm, Caribbean melodies of Andrew Hill, while his skilled deployment of strings suggests the intriguing influence of European art music. In the gentle and expressive tones of singer Deborah Jor- dan, Mitchell has found the perfect voice for his words of healing, while his rhythm team move between jazz, rock and soul with accomplished ease.

You will hear nothing else like The Cusp this year. Literate, articulate and authoritative – The Cusp is a work of pride, integrity and remarkable maturity.

Album Launch: 13th Sept - Pizza Express, Soho, London Robert Mitchell’s Panacea will be on tour Oct-Dec 2010

Tammy Payne - vocals Jim Barr - bass Dan Moore - hammond organ Neil Smith - guitar Dylan Howe - drums

‘Don’t Think Twice’ is the powerfully evocative debut album from Bristol-based vocalist, Tammy Payne, and her new project Tamco. Payne, who is probably best known for her work with legendary drum ‘n’ bass and trip-hop pioneers Smith & Mighty but can also be found writing psychedelic folk with Jukes or collaborating with the likes of John Parish has drawn upon her home town’s vibrant music scene to create a unique new band. Drawing on influences from Tom Waits to Nick Cave and Julie Driscoll to Roberta Flack, Tamco was born out of late night whiskies and a shared love of ‘50s and ‘60s jazz. The band features some of Bristol’s most creative and innovative musicians, mav- erick bassist Jim Barr (Portishead, Get The Blessing), guitarist Neil Smith (Liftmen), keyboardist Dan Moore (Andy Shepperd) and drummer Dylan Howe (Nick Cave, Damon Albarn, Portishead and Robert Wyatt).

Don’t Think Twice is a collection of well-loved songs encompassing a multitude of genres. At first glance the songs appear disparate but look closer and a theme emerges, these are songs of jealousy, deceit and obsession all chosen by Payne for their emotional content. Songs that she and her band mates are able to inhabit and stylishly make their own, drawing on but never in thrall to their influences, to create a powerful work that’s inspirational in it’s own right. Recorded live in one room as the band were keen to capture ‘a moment rather than a process’. With no song requiring more than two or three takes the whole album took just three days to record. Any mistakes have been left in because, for Tamco, accuracy plays second fiddle to the emotion and chemistry of the moment.

Louche, hip and darkly brooding Tamco find new nuances and meanings in the familiar, drawing us into an alter- nate history of whisky-fused musical connections, late night bars and crackly old records and in their hands these songs have never sounded better.

WILLIAM PARKER I Plan To Stay A Believer - The Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield AUM Fidelity AUM062/63 642623306222 2xCD digipack William Parker - bass, doson’ngoni, balafon; Hamid Drake - drums; Dave Burrell - piano; Lewis Barnes - trumpet; Darryl Foster - tenor & soprano sax; Sabir Mateen - alto & tenor sax, flute; Leena Conquest - vocals; Amiri Baraka - voice, poetry; with guests: Lafayette Gilchrist - piano; Guillermo E. Brown - drums; New Life Tabernacle Generation of Praise Choir of Brooklyn, NY

I Plan To Stay A Believer / If There’s A Hell Below / We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue / I’m So Proud / Ya He Yey Ya / This Is My Country (Paris) / People Get Ready / The Inside Song / This Is My Country (New York) / It’s Alright / Move On Up / Freddie’s Dead / New World Order Bassist/composer William Parker is among the most active and highly regarded musicians performing today. The Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield is the first project in his 35-year career devoted to the music of another composer; here Parker interpolates the mighty Mayfield song- book with an equally mighty 8-piece band. Curtis Mayfield was a prophet, a preacher, a revolutionary, a humanist, and a griot. Words that all apply to William Parker himself. I Plan To Stay A Believer is the definitive document of this project, with fully exuberant perform- ances of each piece drawn from concert recordings spanning the past decade. Included are two pieces from the group’s very first 2001 performance in Paris with a chorus of 90 children, and another pair from New York in 2008 which feature a full gospel choir.

“This is a long set (nearly two and a half hours), but it’s never less than vibrantly alive and utterly suffused with joy.” The Wire (Sept 2010)

DAVID S. WARE Onecept AUM Fidelity AUM064 642623306420 CD digipack David S. Ware - tenor sax, stritch, saxello; William Parker - bass; Warren Smith - drums, tympani, percussion The recording and release of Onecept celebrates David S. Ware’s 50th year of singular and profound saxophone artistry; a studio session specifically arranged for same featuring Ware on three horns: saxello, stritch, tenor along with fellow musical masters William Parker on bass (stalwart fellow prophet) and Warren Smith on drums and tympani (also featured on Ware’s album Shakti). Unlike most every previous album he has made (Corridors & Parallels being another exception), there was no rehearsal for this session; the songs/streams were created fully in the moment of creation, trusting in collective skill to manifest the majesty.

Saturnian (AUM060) reviews: “the three lengthy solos here are by no means morbid and meditative metaphors for a keenly felt mortality. They are kicking, wriggling things, chasing their own tails, snaking sideways off the path, fecund, full of life.” **** review in the Sunday Times

RUDRESH MAHANTHAPPA & BUNKY GREEN Apex Pi Recordings Pi35 808713003529 CD digipack Rudresh Mahanthappa (as); Bunky Green (as); Jason Moran (p); Francois Moutin (b); Jack DeJohnette (d); Damion Reid (d). Apex is a blazing collaboration between alto saxophonists Rudresh Mahanthappa and Bunky Green that puts on display a fifty-year continuum of state-of-the-art saxophone playing. Featuring an all-star band, Apex shines a much-deserved spotlight on Bunky Green, a hugely influential but under-recognized original in jazz. The two horn men share a similar biting tone, harmonic sophistication, a well-articulated rapid fire attack, and a certain rhythmic elasticity. Perhaps what’s most amazing about Green is that such modern playing is coming from a 75 year old. The album features originals by both Mahanthappa and Green specifically created for this collaboration. The compositions highlight a collective vision of using traditional forms as a launching point for contemporary improvisation and interaction at its highest level. On Apex, Bunky Green and Rudresh Mahanthappa look back over the last fifty years of jazz saxophone playing and together chart its course into the future.

SCOTT COLLEY Empire CAM Jazz CAMJ7828-2 8024709782823 CD Scott Colley (b); Ralph Alessi (tr); Bill Frisell (g); Craig Taborn (p); Brian Blade (d) With “Empire” (the second album Colley records for CAM Jazz, after the success of his “Architect of the Silent Moment”), Colley approaches the highest peak of his production. The narrative sense, the poetic language, the common breadth bestowed upon the essence of his art, are what make this album a fascinating work, one in which a wealth of nuances is fully performed. Accomplice in one of the best line-ups imaginable today, Colley enhances the all-absorbing aes- thetic that Bill Frisell brings out with his guitar, all the magic of that instrument, giving melod- ic lines to the intense voice of Ralph Alessi, and knowing how to make full use of Craig Taborn’s piano and Brian Blade’s genius—a drummer able to transform into gold all the music with which he comes into contact.

ANTONIO SANCHEZ Live in New York at Jazz Standard CAM Jazz CAMJ7826-2 8024709782625 2CD Antonio Sanchez (d); Scott Colley (b); Miguel Zenon (as); David Sanchez (ts) After the global success of “Migration”, on which Chick Corea and Pat Metheny participated, Antonio Sanchez returns with this splendid live recording for the Italian label CAM Jazz. For the eight tracks (spread over two hours) of “Live in New York at Jazz Standard”, the Mexican drum- mer surrounds himself with some of the most crystalline talent on the scene today. Starting from bassist Scott Colley, already a guest on “Migration”, who returns the favor for Sanchez’s partici- pation on the album “architect of the silent moment” (also released by CAM Jazz), for which the bassist from Los Angeles was leader. Then he strikes by entrusting the front line of this piano- less group with two saxophones, alto by Miguel Zenon and tenor by David Sanchez. As Antonio states: “I knew this band was going to be something special so I really wanted to document it at its peak.” Job well done.

With their debut release in 2004, and with two more studio albums since, the trio [em] have been showered with awards in several countries. So what exactly is the secret of this trio? On the one hand, it is of course the exceptional individual skills of its members: that unique combination of excellent technique, inexhaustible creativity and instinctive interaction as is embodied by Michael Wollny and which is proven, besides [em], by other duet recordings with Heinz Sauer, Joachim Kühn and Tamar Halperin. On the other hand it is also the ever sonorous and rhythmically driven bass of Eva Kruse – which sprawls from classical to modern music and is in demand from Sweden to Germany. And, of course, the highly precise, unrivalled versatility and extremely percussive drumming of Eric Schaefer.

YOUN SUN NAH Same Girl ACT ACT9024-2 614427902429 CD digipack Youn Sun Nah - vocals, kalimba, music box, kazoo; Ulf Wakenius - guitars; Lars Danielsson - acoustic bass, cello; Xavier Desandre-Navarre - percussion; Special guest on track 11: Roland Brival - narration In Youn Sun Nah, someone with star quality has stepped onto the music scene, someone who is able to forge bridges in a truly unique way. The bridge between Asia and Europe for example, or between jazz, chanson and pop; between the highest technical precision and extreme musical freedom, between minimalism and exuberance and the bridge between the familiar and the unfa- miliar. With her new album “Same Girl” Youn Sun Nah is still on a musical voyage, exploring and experimenting with different musical styles and genres. Again the song material is very diverse, but she is still the same girl the audience has come to know and love, surprising the listener with songs that have been interpreted in highly ndividual and distinctive ways, and which break free from the usual stylistic constraints. Youn Sun Nah’s new album embraces eleven fascinating song interpretations of a very special kind, her distinctive voice building the framework for her multi-faceted musical tastes. Styles and genres may change from tune to tune, but it is always the same girl you are listening to: Youn Sun Nah. Truly unique.

RONNIE LYNN PATTERSON Music Outnote OTN001 3760195730010 CD digipack Ronnie Lynn Patterson - piano; François Moutin - bass; Louis Moutin - drums There is nothing like the “standards” to judge a musician’s skills; he can take the easy route or fail with a sacrilege. Ronnie Lynn Patterson knows how to avoid those traps. An ex-drummer converted to piano; a rock and soul fan that came to jazz; he doesn’t use the master composers (Coleman, Coltrane, Davis, Monk, and the American popular songbook, starting with Rodgers & Hart) to forge a reputation; he is devoted to this repertoire with a passionate respect. Born in Wichita (Kansas), Patterson reveals a musical personality that borrows various influences: Rachmaninov, Morton Feldman, Keith Jarrett. Radiant, he avoids the effects of needless virtuos- ity. On Coltrane’s Lazy Bird, the beat is sustained at an impressive up-tempo. In All Blues and Blue in Green (from Kind of Blue) the mood is nonchalant and emotional. On the paths of this New Label! celestial promenade, this too rare pianist has chosen two road mates, both rich in sensibility and in listening ability. Ronnie Lynn had already recorded with drummer Louis Moutin. Today, he joins forces with Louis’ twin François and their complicity is marvellous.

EDDIE GOMEZ & CESARIUS ALVIM Forever Plus Loin PL4529 794881976423 CD digipack Bassist Gomez has a recording career stretching back to the mid 60s. Aside from his long stint with Bill Evans, his discography includes a dozen or more albums as leader and works with Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, Hugh Masekela, Richie Havens, Tim Hardin, Charles Mingus, Ralph Towner and a host of other luminaries. For this latest duo project, recorded in New York in January 2010, he chose as musical partner the Paris-based Brazilian pianist Cesarius Alvim.

JOEY DEFRANCESCO Never Can Say Goodbye - The Music of Michael Jackson HighNote HCD7215 632375721527 CD Track Listing: Thriller • Never Can Say Goodbye • Beat It • Human Nature • Rock With You • She’s Out of My Life • The Way You Make Me Feel • Lady in My Life • Billie Jean Jazz has a long history of taking popular songs of the day and making them vehicles for improv- isation. Joey DeFrancesco’s current exploration of the music associated with Michael Jackson is merely the latest addition to the list. Though this music is linked with the undisputed “King of Pop,” this is jazz at its finest – complex and virtuosic yet easily accessible, at times intense, at others fun-filled, and always with the feeling of the unknown that comes with truly spontaneous and inspired improvisation. Without sacrificing a whit of the popular groove of these tunes, Joey and his cohorts give them fresh color and new and different life. Jackson and his music have become part of the American landscape every bit as much as the singers that preceded him and the songs, as DeFrancesco’s spirited readings bear witness to, give themselves smartly to an improvisatory approach.

BENJAMIN SCHAEFER Beneath the Surface Enja ENJ95562 063757955627 CD The trio of this young German painist is dedicated to a melodic, modern jazz concept, improvis- ing and interacting at a high level of musicianship. On this new album Schaefer displays excel- lent piano mastery, love of melody, tasteful references to the European tradition and charming original compositions. The five pieces which add clarinets, violin and cello to the trio are a fine proof to this.

Silent Movies, the new release from guitar great Marc Ribot, finds him taking another surprising step in a career filled with unexpected turns. One might expect a program of solo guitar music from Ribot to be filled with bracing atonality or studies in texture. Instead, Silent Movies is filled with performances of gorgeous contemplation that linger on the mind long after they are over. The album reflects Ribot’s fascination with movies and contains pieces intended to function as music for films: some are adaptations of music he has actually written for films, others for classic silent movies that he scored for his personal amusement, still others for films of his own imagination. His goal is to explore, as he says “the strange area between language and spatiality that exists partly in between music and visual image, and partly as a common property of both.”

Whatever the inspiration, Silent Movies is replete with beautiful melodies and quietly wistful playing of a sort sel- dom heard from Ribot. The album is almost a polar opposite of his last release Party Intellectuals with his band Ceramic Dog, a rock power trio going for it in an all-out sonic assault, and nothing like his last solo recital Exercises in Futility, a study in extended technique for the guitar. Given the luxury of three days in the studio, Ribot deliv- ers a program filled with gentle, haunting songs that evoke the feel of a different time. As he says in the CD’s liner notes, the recording project “did indeed have the feeling of having walked backwards into the beautiful frame of a silent movie.”

This album is Marc Ribot’s 19th release, and in addition to his own works he has recorded and/or performed with the likes of Tom Waits; Elvis Costello; Lounge Lizards; John Zorn; Arto Lindsay; Robert Plant & Alison Krauss; McCoy Tyner; Medeski, Martin & Wood, Wilson Pickett; David Sylvian, Madeleine Peyroux, Marianne Faithfull and many more.

harmonia mundi UK Ltd, 45 Vyner Street, London E2 9DQ (tel) 020 8709 9500 (email) [email protected] NEW RELEASES 20th September File under: Rock DOMINIC MILLER November Q-rious QRM113-2 4260027621138 CD digipack “November” adds another highlight to Dominic Miller’s impressive artistic biography. Miller has released several solo albums (“First Touch”, “Second Nature”, “Third World”, “Fourth Wall”) and since the late 1980s has also been a much coveted session musician. The list of his collabora- tions is endless – to name but a few: The Chieftains, Eddi Reader, Manu Dibango, Paul Young, Bryan Adams, Luciano Pavarotti, Peter Gabriel, Pat Metheny, Tina Turner, The Pretenders, Boyzone and The Backstreet Boys. Ever since “The Soul Cages” from 1991, Miller has been involved in every album by Sting; he has played more than a thousand concerts with the former member of The Police and was involved in the composition of hit songs such as “Shape Of My Heart.” With “November,” Miller yet again proves that he is a top-notch guitarist. The exceptional musi- cian plays with an ease and somnambulistic confidence that words simply cannot express appro- priately. His willingness to move beyond his artistic skills is what distinguishes him from other virtuoso contemporaries – Dominic Miller has moved on from the level of ’mere’ skillful perform- ance and perfected craft. These days, he is more focused on expression, on the beauty of a cer- tain sound and the truth of the moment. His transcendence of the physical is a trait that singles him out as one of the chosen few. Miller found session partners in drummer Ian Thomas (Eric Clapton, Seal, Paul McCartney, Tom Jones), bass player (; uncontested master of the slap bass) and keyboarder Mike Lindup (equally known through Level 42). To this core of musicians he added Israel-born pianist Yaron Herman, as well as keyboarder Jason Rebello (Sting), flautist Dave Heath and sax player Stan Sulzmann (Kenny Wheeler, Michael Brecker, NDR Big Band) – all of them well- versed top professionals who put their distinctive musical personalities on the back burner and devoted their skills uniquely to Miller’s compositions. MOP MEUCHIINE Plays Robert Wyatt Le Chant du Monde 2741869 794881957521 CD digipack A French tribute to the genius of Robert Wyatt, nicely timed as a precursor to the relase of the new Wyatt album in October. You get nine Wyatt “covers”, counting songs/melodies Robert has done as covers. All of them done with respect, but thankfully not too much respect, and some of them even turn out a bit noisy, like the fine instrumental version of “Sea Song”, “Gharbzadegi” and Offenbach/Wyatt´s (!) “Five black notes and one white note”. This is a must-have for Robert Wyatt completists, since the album also has two short interviews, and the band added music to Robert´s voice on “Locomotive”. “This disc is an excellent introduction to her art and her reinterpretation of fado. The first thing that hits you is her voice: textured, powerful, possessed of extraordinary clarity.” **** Songlines (July 2010)

To celebrate the first UK concert appearances by one of the finest up and coming fadistas from Portugal,Ana Moura, World Village is re-releasing her latest album. Ana’s rise to prominence in her homeland is in part due to her phenomenal vocal talent, but to a wider public con- ciousness it is her patronage by two of the world’s greatest musical names that has so boosted her status - none other than The Rolling Stones and Prince! Ana has been invited to share a stage with both acts, and graciously accepted both times. With Prince she guested recently at the Super Bock Super Rock Festival in Lisbon before a crowd of 30,000:

“The only time Prince smiled much was when he invited the young fado singer Ana Moura on stage and sang “A Sos com o Noite” and “Vou dar de Beber a Dor”, the drowning-your-sorrows anthem by the great queen of fado Amalia Rodrigues. The songs were only semi-rehearsed and Prince was inventively improvising on his guitar and looked like he was genuinely enjoying himself. As for Ana Moura, she will be touring the UK this autumn and has a wonderful, expressive voice and real star quality. You will be hearing a lot more about her – from me, anyway.” Peter Culshaw, The Arts Desk Ana Moura UK Tour : October 30th Southampton Turner Sims; 31st Bracknell South Hill Park; November 2nd Gateshead Sage; 3rd Shrewsbury Theatre Severn; 4th London Union Chapel
