The group takes its inspiration from Marseille in the thirties, a veritable musical melting pot, where Provençal songs could be heard alongside local operettas by Vincent Scotto or the black music bursting onto the scene at the time (i.e. blues and jazz, with music from the West Indies and Brazil too). This provides the background for the group’s new, up-to-the minute songs, sea and harbours shanties that reek of the briny air, shipyard cranes and rocky inlets. Sin Rumba, no hay Son! - Without Rumba there is no Son! The opening tune, Embale tiene la llave, cuts to the chase with lead singer Eugenio Rodríguez Rodríguez, who is known as “Raspa” for the agreeably rough timbre of his voice, trading close-harmony licks with his cohorts. Number six, La Rumba no es como ayer, a percussive beauty, finds all hips in motion. The ninth tune, La Mulata rumbera, spotlights guest artist Bertha Portuondo’s plangent tone, high spirits and exquisite phrasing; she often toys with the beat, playfully lagging a touch behind while kicking up her heels in joyous abandon. On the eleventh track, Me dieron la clave, another great rumbero, Emilio Moret wields his lustrous tenor with a youth’s directness and a master’s subtlety. Each of the 14 selections unfurls like rum-tinged cigar smoke, swooning, exuberant, sexy and plaintive; as intricate as chamber-music, as liltingly sensual as a slow-dance, as sweetly guileless as a lullaby, as primal as the throbbing heart of a conga drum. harmonia mundi UK Ltd, 45 Vyner Street, London E2 9DQ (tel) 020 8709 9500 (email) [email protected] NEW RELEASES 20th September File under: World SABOR DE GRÀCIA Sabor Pa’ Rato World Village 498037 8427592001338 CD World/Spain/Catalan The Catalan rumba is a popular musical current of Gypsy roots which arose in Barcelona in the mid-fifties. It emerged as the confluence of two western music traditions: flamenco and Afro- Cuban. It was combined by Catalan Gypsies into a new style of urban folklore through the assimilation of Afro-Latin patterns into their flamenco musical tradition. Sabor de Gràcia comes up as the Catalan rumba band most abreast of its time thanks to this magic formula. After mov- ing closer to Latin American traits in later years, it wishes now to go back home to the roots of this crossbred, provocative and hedonist style that used to set everybody dancing wherever it was played. The town of Gràcia is now a genuine Gypsy quarter. This is indeed where the true nature of the Catalan rumba represented by Sabor de Gràcia (Taste of Gracia) is to be found. They are a young though experienced band who know how to connect with a faithful public eager to enjoy the rumba. Sabor pa’rato is their fourth album, a vibrant recording that marks the first collaboration with World Village. JOÃO BOSCO & NDR BIG BAND Senhoras Do Amazonas Yellowbird YEB77162 767522771626 CD digipack World/Brazil First discovered by Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, the brilliant composer/vocalist/guitarist Joao Bosco is one of the main figures of MPB (Música Popular Brasileira). His 2006 release Obrigada Gente! Ao Vivo (Universal Brazil) has sold over 100,000 copies in his homeland. In Europe he is one of the “secret pearls” of Brazilian singer-songwriter music still to be discovered by a larger audience. Admired as a versatile vocalist and a dynamic performer, Bosco has been noted for his singular fusion of Arab culture, Afro-American music and Brazilian styles bossa nova influenced by American jazz. This studio album with Germany’s NDR Big Band stemmed from a joint Brazilian tour in 2007.
