Passada a vontade de esmiuçá-los e de esmiuçarmo-nos, e pontapeados pela semântica da economia, elegemos 'austeridade' para 2011. Bateu 'esperança' e até 'troika' e nem a certeza de que já estão a vir 'charters' vingou. Austeridade é "a qualidade de quem é austero"; é "severidade e rigor"; "cuidado escrupuloso em não se deixar dominar pelo que agrada aos sentidos ou deleita a concupiscência". E está tudo dito. “Diasporic Music in a Time of War”: Pantomime Terrors John Hutnyk1 Centre for Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London I increasingly find it problematic to write analytically about “diaspora and music” at a time of war. It seems inconsequential; the culture industry is not much more than a distraction; a fairy tale diversion to make us forget a more sinister amnesia behind the stories we tell. This paper nonetheless takes up debates about cultural expression in the field of diasporic musics in Britain. It examines instances of creative engagement with, and destabilisation of, music genres by Fun^da^mental and Asian Dub Foundation, and it takes a broadly culture critique perspective on diasporic creativity as a guide to thinking about the politics of hip- hop in a time of war. Examples from music industry and media reportage of the work of these two bands pose both political provocation and a challenge to the seemingly unruffled facade of British civil society, particularly insofar as musical work might still be relevant to struggles around race and war. Here, at a time of what conservative critics call a ‘clash of civilizations’, I examine how music and authenticity become the core parameters for a limited and largely one-sided argument that seems to side-step political context in favour of sensationalised – entrenched – identities and a mythic, perhaps unworkable, ideal of cultural harmony that praises the most asinine versions of multiculturalism while demonizing those most able to bring it about. Here the idea that musical cultures are variously authentic, possessive or coherent must be questioned when issues of death and destruction are central, but ignored. -

Traça a história das gravadoras independentes britânicas, particular- mente da música eletrônica dançante, com base em pesquisa realizada em Londres na dé- cada de 1990. O estudo etnográfico da companhia Nation Records é discutido à luz da com- plexa política cultural da conjuntura da década de 1990. Abstract This essay seeks to analyse the complex politics of technology, representation and insti- tution in popular music. It traces the history of British independent record companies, par- ticularly electronic dance music companies, based on research conducted in London in the 1990s. Excerpted from draft of: ISLAMIC HIP-HOP vs. ISLAMOPHOBIA: AKI NAWAZ, NATACHA ATLAS, AKHENATON Ted Swedenburg Department of Anthropology University of Arkansas (accessed from http://comp.uark.edu/~tsweden/IAM.html) [ . ] Akhenaton: 100% Métèque Akhenaton, rapper and chief spokesperson for Marseille rap group IAM,29 was born Philippe Fragione, son of immigrants from the region of Calabria in South Italy, who settled in Marseille. When IAM burst onto the French rap scene30 with its 1991 release ...De la Planète Mars, one of its most notable features was what André Prévos dubs its "pharaohism." Four of the group's six members go by ancient Egyptian names (Imhotep, DJ Kheops, Divin Kephren, and of course Akhenaton), and IAM's lyrics are full of references to ancient Egyptian civilization. Prévos argues astutely that "pharaohism" permitted IAM to assert connections to the contemporary Arab world in an indirect, coded way: "The concept [of pharaohism] underlines Arabic origins while bypassing negative representations of North African countries gripped by Islamic fundamentalism and economic uncertainties" (1996:721).31 The jacket of IAM's enormously successful second CD (L'ombre est lumière, 1993)32 even asserts that in ancient times, Egypt was connected to Marseille, but the continents subsequently drifted apart. I would take issue, however, with Prévos's claim that IAM's "pharaohism" is an original development that demonstrates French rap's growing independence from US hip-hop hegemony (Prévos 1996:719, 721-722). According to Akhenaton, the name IAM (standing for Imperial Asiatic Men)33 was chosen after he read Senegalese writer Cheikh Anta Diop, one of Afrocentrism's leading theorists, who spurred a pre-existing interest in the Asiatic Middle East as the origin of the monotheistic religions and in Egypt as the (Black) cradle of civilization. -
