Few musicians share the ability of saxophonist/composer Mahanthappa to embody the expansive possibilities of his music with his culture. Time and again, he has eloquently displayed the capacity to absorb numerous styles and genres of music, combine them with the language of modern jazz, and emerge with a new form still recognizably jazz. What has materialized is a sound that fuses progressive jazz and South Indian classical music in a FRI 6TH - SAT 7TH SEPT: (Doors 6.00pm & 10.30pm (Two Shows) / £35.00 - £55.00 ) fluid and forward-looking form that reflects Mahanthappa’s own experience growing up a second-generation Indian-American. Kilbourn Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53203 414.908.6000 MillerHighLifeTheatre.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sarah Maio [email protected] 414-908-6056 King Crimson Announce “Music Is Our Friend” North American Tour Dates 2021 King Crimson comes to the Miller High Life Theatre on August 31, 2021 MILWAUKEE – (June 7, 2021) – The Miller High Life Theatre and Alternative Concert Group are proud to welcome King Crimson with special guest The Zappa Band to the Miller High Life Theatre, August 31, 2021. Artist VIP presale is June 9 at 11 a.m., and venue presale is June 10th at 10 a.m. Tickets go on sale to the public Friday, June 11 at noon at the Miller High Life Theatre box office or Ticketmaster. When King Crimson returns to action this July, it will be the seventh year that the band has toured since returning to performing live in 2014, a run only interrupted by the lockdown in 2020. In that time, the audience has been reinvented, as much as the band itself, something Robert Fripp noted after the band’s performance in Pompeii, Italy’s famous amphitheater: “In Pompeii, a large percentage of the audience was young couples; KC moved into the mainstream in Italy. I walked onstage knowing that this band's position in the world has changed level.” - Robert Fripp The band’s shows regularly include material from twelve of their thirteen studio albums, including many songs from their seminal 1969 album In the Court of the Crimson King, described by Pete Townshend as an “uncanny masterpiece.” The 7-piece line-up play many historic pieces, which Crimson has never previously played live, as well as new arrangements of Crimson classics – “the music is new whenever it was written.” There are also new instrumentals and songs, as well as compositions by the three drummers, Pat Mastelotto, Gavin Harrison and Jeremy Stacey, which are a regular highlight.

  • Level 42 Highlights from Retroglide
Level 42 highlights from retroglide Retroglide was released in September 2006 and was the first Level 42 album in twelve years. Although the album featured all the supporting musicians from the current Level 42 live band (Gary Husband, Lyndon Connah, Nathan King, Sean Freeman) as well as original keyboard player Mike Lindup, it was written solely by Mark King and Boon Gould. The album was released on the W14 label, part of the Universal group and featured artwork from Alan Brooks, who had created the artwork for many of the band’s early records. The cover art also saw the reappearance of the ‘princess’, who was featured on the cover of the first Level 42 record. Retroglide was eagerly anticipated by the group’s fanbase, who were hungry for new material from the band. The resulting album updated the classic Level 42 sound, although certain trademarks - such as King’s slap bass playing and the use of additional sequenced bass parts remained. Others, such as Lindup’s falsetto backing vocals were for the most part absent since at the point that he rejoined the band the album was almost complete. Although Retroglide was not a large scale commercial success, it quickly became popular with fans, and the new songs were well-received on the subsequent tour, which featured Mike Lindup now firmly back in the fold. The band toured in support of the album in Autumn of 2006 and released a Retroglide Live DVD the following year. ‘Dive Into The Sun’ Intro The opening track ‘Dive Into The Sun’ is classic Level 42 and is driven by a powerful riff-based groove from King.

NEW YORK June 2010 | No. 98 Your FREE Monthly Guide to the New York Jazz Scene newyork.allaboutjazz.com HERBIE HANCOCKSEVEN DECADES OF IMAGINATION Mark Feldman • David S. Ware • Kadima Collective • Event Calendar NEW YORK Despite the burgeoning reputations of other cities, New York still remains the jazz capital of the world, if only for sheer volume. A night in NYC is a month, if not more, anywhere else - an astonishing amount of music packed in its 305 square miles (Manhattan only 34 of those!). This is normal for the city but this month, there’s even more, seams bursting with amazing concerts. New York@Night Summer is traditionally festival season but never in recent memory have 4 there been so many happening all at once. We welcome back impresario George Interview: Mark Feldman Wein (Megaphone) and his annual celebration after a year’s absence, now (and by Sean Fitzell hopefully for a long time to come) sponsored by CareFusion and featuring the 6 70th Birthday Celebration of Herbie Hancock (On The Cover). Then there’s the Artist Feature: David S. Ware always-compelling Vision Festival, its 15th edition expanded this year to 11 days 7 by Martin Longley at 7 venues, including the groups of saxophonist David S. Ware (Artist Profile), drummer Muhammad Ali (Encore) and roster members of Kadima Collective On The Cover: Herbie Hancock (Label Spotlight). And based on the success of the WinterJazz Fest, a warmer 9 by Andrey Henkin edition, eerily titled the Undead Jazz Festival, invades the West Village for two days with dozens of bands June.
