Center Living List 2015 6 Multicultural Events___________________________ Lewis & Clark College Sponsored Events Fall Semester National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15) An annual celebration of the Hispanic culture and important Hispanic leaders in American history. Coming Out Week (October) Events hosted by many campuses throughout the nation in support of the LGBTQ community and LGBTQ social justice issues. National American Indian & Alaska Native Heritage Month (November) Hosted by the Department of Inclusion & Multicultural Engagement, in conjunction with Native Student Union and Indigenous Ways of Knowing program, in celebration of the Native American History and rich culture. Ray Warren Symposium on Race & Ethnic Studies (November) An annual campus-wide symposium that focuses on diversity and multicultural issues surrounding race, ethnicity, and identity. Spring Semester Martin Luther King, Jr. Week of Service, Learning, and Action (January) An annual week of service learning, programs, speakers, and a candlelight vigil to reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Black History Month (February) Hosted by the Department of Inclusion & Multicultural Engagement, in conjunction with the Black Student Union, to create this month-long awareness event celebrating the history and current contributions of African Americans. Living List 2015 7 International Fair (March) Occurring yearly on the first Saturday in March, this International Students of Lewis & Clark-coordinated event attracts students, staff, and members of the Portland community to its display of food and cultural performances. Gender Studies Symposium (March) Focusing on issues of gender, race, and class, this symposium includes an art exhibit, performances, roundtables, workshops, papers, panels, and keynote talks by prominent guest speakers. Lu’au (April) An annual community event that features authentic Hawaiian food, costumes, music, and dancing. The Lu’au is the result of months of preparation by the Hawaii Club. Fiesta de Salsa (April) Started by a student in 1999, this annual celebration of Mexican American/Chicano/Latino heritage attracts hundreds of students for lessons and dancing each spring. Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (May celebrated in April) ; Hosted by the Department of Inclusion & Multicultural Engagement, in conjunction with the Asian Student Union, as a celebration and critical exploration of Asian American and Pacific Islander culture.
