MATATIAS CARP THE BLACK BOOK THE SUFFERINGS OF THE JEWS IN ROMANIA DURING THE FASCIST DICTATORSHIP 1940–1944 Vol. II-A THE POGROM IN IASI THE NATIONAL PUBLISHING AND GRAPHIC ARTS SOCIETY BUCHAREST – CONST.MILLE STR. 5-7-9 1948 1 I dedicated these pages of Jewish suffering to the pious memory of my father, Horia Carp. He was an example of Jewish virtue and pride and during his entire life his thoughts and feelings were aimed at achieving justice and liberty for his people. 2 EXPLANATIONS The following pages contain the first part, i.e. the first chapter of the second volume of the "BLACK BOOK", a documentary synthesis of the sufferings of the Jews in Romania, during the years 1940–1944. Generally speaking, this second volume comprises all the persecutions endured by the Jews during the war (June 22, 1941 – August 23, 1944) in the territory situated in the west of the Prut river while the third volume "TRANSNISTRIA" published at the end of the year 1947, comprises the same period of time but in the invaded territories in the east of the Prut river. These two volumes were to appear simultaneously. However, things did not happen as planned due to technical reasons, so that I had to invert the order of the volumes. For the time being, I have published this first chapter because of financial difficulties. Should it be possible, the other six chapters will be also published, either in succession or simultaneously, namely: Chapter II – General measures of oppression Chapter III – Evacuation, hostages, camps, the yellow star Chapter IV - Forced labor Chapter V – Romanianization (Labor, goods, economic enterprises) Chapter VI – Exceptional contributions Chapter VII – The Central of Romanian Jews Being consistent with the unbiased conduct I proposed myself to keep within the entire book, I also refrained in this volume from any literary preoccupation and I avoided as much as possible to have personal opinions.

  • The Real Estate of the Moldavian Boyar Dumitru Buhuş
Anişoara IONAŞCU∗ THE REAL ESTATE OF THE MOLDAVIAN BOYAR DUMITRU BUHUŞ Abstract: This study presents the role played by the boyar Dumitru Buhuş in the political life of Moldavia during the first half of the 17th century, as a result of the important positions he held within the princely council (cubicularius, logothete, treasurer, great treasurer, pârcălab/castellanus of Hotin and Neamţ, great spatharios) and his nobiliary estates gathered throughout his life, representing his wealth and power. The study underlines, on the basis of chancery documents, his lands, the way they were acquired, the counties where his domains were scattered. It also identifies the boyar’s real estates, as well as the courts he built. Keywords: Moldavia, Dumitru Buhuş, Real Estate, Romanian Nobility, 17th century. * This paper aims to succinctly analyse the role that the boyar Dumitru Buhuş played in the political life of Moldavia during the first half of the 17th century, when he held major public dignities – cubicularius, logothete, treasurer, great treasurer, castellanus of Hotin and Neamţ, great spatharios1 –, and was, thus, member in the princely council. In the same time, the presentation follows the implications that these high political–administrative offices had at a material, patrimonial level, regarding the fortune he gathered, which served as the foundation of his high social status. The paper reconstructs, on the basis of chancery documents, the configuration and consolidation of Dumitru Buhuş’ real estate, with emphasis on main acquisition methods, the localisation of his estates, data on other real estates and the courts he possessed. ∗ Ph.D. Candidate, History Department, The Lower Danube University of Galaţi (Romania); the research was conducted within the project POSDRU 88/1.5/S: “Improving the activity of the Ph.D.

  • Changing Identities at the Fringes of the Late Ottoman Empire: the Muslims of Dobruca, 1839-1914
Changing Identities at the Fringes of the Late Ottoman Empire: The Muslims of Dobruca, 1839-1914 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Catalina Hunt, Ph.D. Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Carter V. Findley, Advisor Jane Hathaway Theodora Dragostinova Scott Levi Copyright by Catalina Hunt 2015 Abstract This dissertation examines the Muslim community of Dobruca, an Ottoman territory granted to Romania in 1878, and its transformation from a majority under Ottoman rule into a minority under Romanian administration. It focuses in particular on the collective identity of this community and how it changed from the start of the Ottoman reform era (Tanzimat) in 1839 to the outbreak of World War I in 1914. This dissertation constitutes, in fact, the study of the transition from Ottoman subjecthood to Romanian citizenship as experienced by the Muslim community of Dobruca. It constitutes an assessment of long-term patterns of collective identity formation and development in both imperial and post-imperial settings. The main argument of the dissertation is that during this period three crucial factors altered the sense of collective belonging of Dobrucan Muslims: a) state policies; b) the reaction of the Muslims to these policies; and c) the influence of transnational networks from the wider Turkic world on the Muslim community as a whole. Taken together, all these factors contributed fully to the community’s intellectual development and overall modernization, especially since they brought about new patterns of identification and belonging among Muslims.

  • The Changing Politics of Local and Regional Development and Governance in Romania
THE CHANGING POLITICS OF LOCAL AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND GOVERNANCE IN ROMANIA MICHAIL BINIAKOS A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Economic Geography (SSCI). Newcastle University School of Geography, Politics and Sociology Centre for Urban and Regional Studies (CURDS) February 2011 Abstract This thesis investigates the extent to which a move from a planned to a market economy has changed the nature and character of local and regional development and government in Romania. In the aftermath of the collapse of the ‘Iron Curtain’, the swift towards a market economy and democracy by the ex-communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe triggered a vast process of change that affected all aspects of social life across different many levels. In spite of the complexity of these changes, and the general realisation that local and regional policies are determined from place to place and overtime according to specific domestic characteristics and political decisions the nature of which will also depend on the time and the place of their execution and implementation, most scholarly analyses remain entrapped within existing theoretical ‘orthodoxies’ and research gaps. In this thesis, various theories in local and regional development, post-Socialist transition and Europeanisation are combined to derive a ‘heterodox’ approach to understanding local and regional development and government in Romania by placing particular emphasis on non- economic factors. The case-study of Neamt County in the North East Region is used to illustrate the empirical evidences of local and regional development policies for the post-Socialist period in Romania.

CEU eTD Collection iii ABSTRACT This study describes a dietary change that had involved the ‘core’ foods of a traditional population’s diet. At the broadest level, the study analyzes from a standard of living perspective the decision of rural residents from a compact region of Romania to switch en masse from a predominant consumption of mămăligă to a predominant consumption of bread during the 1960s. By its topic, my study contributes, empirically, to a better understanding of a major change in the lifestyles of rural residents during an under- researched phase of socialism and, theoretically, to the range of approaches that have been proposed for reevaluating consumers’ experiences during socialism.
